They are too close to live, but this is a tactical nuke. Tactical nukes take out tank formations. Strategic nukes take out cities. Regardless, at that proximity, they would have ignited instantly and blasted apart a second later.

Also, the Soviets did not have better nuclear launch systems, or guidance systems, which is why they compensated for it with massive bombs.

The US needed to hit their targets to do damage to their enemies, but the Soviets could just hit an area relatively far away the target and still annihilate it.

The USSR never had a 100 megaton bomb, the original power was reduced by half in order to reduce fallout.

And "had" is the right bloody word, because only one real bomb was ever created - and that was detonated in the Novaya Zemlya archipelago.

The Reds had radar and satellite detection systems. They even had a computer network, Perimeter, that would have allowed missile commanders the authority to launch everything even if the brass was nuked. Plus, a lot of effort went into hiding silos and submarines.

Even if we could get 'em without being hit back, nuclear autumn just takes a total of a few hundred megatons. Fallout would have gotten in the jet stream and poisoned everyone in the northern hemisphere. Even if we weren't hit directly, the hot ashes of Russian cities would have blown into the sky and catalyzed ozone-destroying reactions. So boom, you have increased UV and ionizing radiation and decreased temperature.
