And if you want to make something realistic, especially if your dropping it into footage, put most of your time into learning how to light the scene. The best modeling in the world will look fake if it's not lit properly and matching the film footage!!

Maya and Inferno were used for this. 3DS is good for the games market but couldn't even touch this standard! Cinema 4D is the upstart of the industry, amazing software and used for films such as Spider Man 3, War of the Worlds, Inception, Tron: Legacy... the list goes on!

Nope. Nobody uses mental ray for film production. It's renders too slow and produces inferior results. They probably used Vray on this one.
