Medias often criticize the low salary (3-6RMB/h, ~0.6$), that is very little compared to western standards but in China you can for instance feed yourself and your family for 5-15RMB (1-3 hours of work). Salary is going up so this will just improve over time.

It's hard to make a valid opinion here. The Chinese media is state regulated but have any Westerners here compared various sources to gain a personal judgement? I think a lot of people just believe what they want to believe which is what the media owned by a few large corporations feeds them with. I went to China this summer. During a train ride from Hong Kong to Kunming ( about 22h) we went through mayby 200-300 tunnels. Before even building one train tunnel ( like Hallandsås tunneln) here in Sweden they got to discusse it for 15 years and even then they get it all wrong. That's the difference between Chinese leadership and western democracy.

I'm a Chinese and I would say, China may get close to the USA in terms of infrastructure and other stuff during the following decades; however, it cannot lead the world like what the USA is doing now, since the USA attacts the brightest brains and it can always refresh itself to keep its leadership.
The Chinese government looks polite to every country, but it respects the United States the most. They are called communists but they dream one day they can be allies with the USA.

There hasn't been any major investment in US infrastructure for the past 50 year's or more. And since the US is getting deeper in to debt by the day. It's not very likely that they will make any new effort to seriously upgrade there infrastructure. Money in America has for the past 2 decades gone to blow up asesst bubble's at home and war and military expantion abroad. The Americans today cannot pay there running bills let alone make big investments.

Medias often criticize the low salary (3-6RMB/h, ~0.6$), that is very little compared to western standards but in China you can for instance feed yourself and your family for 5-15RMB (1-3 hours of work). Salary is going up so this will just improve over time.

I went to China this summer. During a train ride from Hong Kong to Kunming ( about 22h) we went through mayby 200-300 tunnels. Before even building one train tunnel ( like Hallandsås tunneln) here in Sweden they got to discusse it for 15 years and even then they get it all wrong. well you havent been there so you have no idea. I have been there several times. yes in some areas near the mountains, there are still small tribes who eat dogs and drink contaminated water. However, there are much less ghetos in China than in US. The ghetos are much less scary too, due to the nature/characteristics of the asian people. I`ve been in China - a hellhole where everybody dumps their toxic production while claiming to be "green" back in their home countries. I was there during the summer of 2006 in the factory area about 1 hour by car from Shanghai. Streams were dried up and pipes which normally are partially submerged in water were exposed. The bottoms of the pipes were caked with sulfur deposits from factories.

WE DONT live in that era now when there was little understanding of the effects of industrialization and its pollution. You cannot compare it to China which has been industrialized for some time and does understand effects of pollution.
Regarding Olympic buildings - there are plenty Chinese that got pissed off because they were forcibly relocated just to make China more attractive for the Olympics . . . nor did they make any profit from it - only Communist party elitists got richer.

Like I said before -
I've been to China and did not receive the tourist treatment that other westerners get so I saw the dirt behind the facade.
For now China is doing OK because it still is relatively cheap, has stable government and decent roads but when they become too expensive then all the big corporations will go elsewhere.
As long as China keeps help a few get rich get richer then nice comments and pats on the back will be given by so-called experts - but they don't fool me.

hear me out, u dick head, my visit in china was mainly in countryside across centeral, north, south and west parts of china, i went thru over 300 villages, counties, and towns from 2007 to 2008. the area i talk about covers china's 70% of land and 80% of population. i know exactly how poor china is, infrastructure, hygiene, human rights are all backwards! modernizations of bejing and shanghai are at huge costs of leaving vast and vast rural population in desperate poverty.
