Thanks for this tutorial. Now I know. Saw a few other vids saying that EOS lenses can't be stopped down unmounted. Would be a little tedious to continually make Fstop changes....but who is in a hurry? Free macro...cant beat it. Thanks again.
Was there a "pointless video that should have been too embarrassing to upload" contest? Obviously too badly done to be a prank video. Poorly thought out, no actual content, and the resulting photos are terrible. Instead of reshooting this video, or doing it properly in the first place, he just uploaded it. Ick. This child deserves to grow up in a better environment.
@monkey505boy I made it because someone in a thread on POTN asked me what I was talking about when I said "lock the aperture blades". It kinda turned into people thinking this is a tutorial for how to take reverse lens macro shots. It isn't, I was just responding to some guys question.
@Petsku333 haha yeah, this is also true.. I just make sure to be careful and not stir up too much dust when the lens is off... That being said, a good blower / sensor cleaner goes a long way after doing this kinda thing a lot :P
@vyruzdatabass Nope! The only reason to hit the DOF Preview is simply to put the lens into the aperture that it would be set at when it takes the picture.. If you can set it manually, set it to F/11 or so and shoot away :D
Sorry, there was a character limit. AND 3: For Nikon i believe the only way to lock your aperture is to use a DOF (Depth of field) preview button in the way he did in this video. Get the aperture you want hold the DOF preview button and remove your lens. I have a Nikon D80 and mine has it but I am not sure about the D70 and before. Hope this helps some people!
To answer a few questions on here. 1: The reason it is blinking is because your camera is probably in another mode other than manual. For Nikon at least your camera MUST be in manual mode.
2:No it DOES NOT hurt your sensor or mirror doing this, the lens nor anything else touches either of these elements. If you purchase a reversal ring it allows you to attach you lens to your camera directly and for even close macro use extension tubes then the reversal ring

I have a Nikon D70, i tried taking the 52mm lens off and put it on reverse, i cannot press the shutter and it says - F ---- (blinking) how do i take the shot do i have to do something in the menus?
Nice video! I'm still confused on how you got he aperture to lock. I have a Nikon,so maybe it's different? Was that just a paper plate you were using as a reflector?
This guy rules makes educational videos whilst he parents- awesome! Tep??!! Don't put that in your mouth- she winds up under the table- I thought she might reach for the Iron sitting on the window sill.
i wanna know something.... i got d60 today i went to buy a reverse ring... unfortunately there is no availability in my place... more over the man in that shop said it is not advisable to use DSLR cameras in this manner since it may cause damage to mirror and sensors... he said it is applicable only for manual cameras.... so i got upset... is that true??? plz giv me a council abt this topic.... suggest me some tips and tricks... plzzzzzzzzzz
He was probably trying to sell you a macro lens lol. You're not going to damage the camera with this method of photography (especially with a reverse ring) unless you're stupid and touch the mirror / exposed sensor.. Check e-bay for reverse rings (They're called Macro Couplers)
cool tip. cheers

And you just have to love the little dust spots after you play with the lens not attached properly.

what if i have a prime lens 50mm 1.8 , which i can change the aperture with the aperture ring, do i need to hit on the DOF preview button?

Not 100% sure about Nikon, I don't know if it will let you take a picture with no lens attached..

Do you have it on manual settings?

@claymcnamara Yes.. I can't remember what they were exactly, just experiment...
