This isnt the same guitar. I have the real Kawai guitar hound dog taylor used, It needs a little bit restored but its hanging on my wall lol. Just needs a nut and bridge for the strings
Yeah I know it's not the exact model he played, but there was a ton of very similar models with slight variations based off the 4 pickup layout, between both Teisco & Kawai lines, this is one of those.
I have the actual Hound dog taylor guitar. this one is close but mine is a direct clone of his. the one on the album cover at least. i know its worth something just curious if anyone is interested?
Hound dog taylor used what ever he damn wanted he usually sold and then bought new guitars between dates . .. for beer money... . . nothin more rock and rolll then that.
That guitar isn't anything like the Dog's. He played Kawai guitars -- an S-180 first and then a Kingston-labeled SD-4. I took me years but I have both and they rock! Teisco's are more refined sounding and the switches worked when the guitar was new...
This is actually made by Kawai, it could have been sold under a dozen of different names. Teisco being one of them, in Teisco's last days they were sold to Kawai and they actually for a short period made Teisco branded guitars. I got it as it is now, refinished without any logo and with the switches unhooked and strat pickups put in the bridge. I do know it was made by Kawai, It has a string tree and that's a teller there, no Teisco made guitar had them. Only the Kawai made Teisco's.
They don't have any function on this guitar, it has the two strat bridge pickups hardwired to the output jack. It was like that when I got it and although it came with the original pickups as well, I left in the strat pickups because I thought they sounded fantastic :)
I'm not 100% sure what exact guitar he played mostly. But the Kingston brand is just a rebrand of Teisco's and Kawai's. The Kingston company had them make their guitars and didn't manufacturer guitars themselves.
I just called this a Teisco Hound Dog Taylor because he played these style 4 pickup Teisco/Kawai's and I'm not sure the exact model name or number.
Thanks, I'm using a small late 50s RCA Victor tube amp made by either Teisco or Univox. The overdrive sound is just the natural tube overdrive and the guitars pickups which are very hot. No pedals or mods just classic small tube amp tone, the reason I love these old guitars so much. :)
sound like resonator

Hound Dog didn't know how to play slide either. Just wind the amp up to twelve, and y're all set! ;-)

That was a stupid comment.
You need to listen closer.
Your ears need cleaned,perhaps.
You ain't worth a hair on Hound Dogs ass!

Nice sound! Did changing the pickups give you any trouble? I just got one of these guitars as well and might fool around with the pickups, too...
dopeywan 3 years ago
Thanks
I bought it like it is now, with the strat pickups in it.
I'm sure it'd be pretty straight forward though. Good luck!

hey ! you had adopted MK Fingerstyle with your right hand :p
me too
great guitar

The Japanese pick-ups are way underrated. I suspect that some years down the line they will be highly prized. BTW great job on the slide.
