  • In my opinion, what he meant was that, like masturbation, self-improvement is somewhat of an insufficient quick fix, and in a way, eludes you from the true goal (sex and contentment, respectively). Fixing your hair, sculpting your body, gorging on all this materialistic bullshit, it all provides you with a temporary sense of complacency, but it's only until you abandon this superficial mentality and completely strip your life to the core will you be able to truly live on your own volition.

  • His name is Robert Palson

    now he is nothing

this is the miracle of death

  • "self improvement is masturbation, now self distruction..."

  • Haha, I never noticed how similar they walk when they're going to the bus until now...thanks for posting I fucking love this movie.

  • I love idiots here talking about destroying their material electronic goods. Writing it ON A COMPUTER. GET A FUCKING CLUE, IDIOTS!!!

  • destroy your sidekicks, HDTVs, cellphones

and while you're at it start chopping down telephone poles

  • Its only after we've lost everything that were free to do anything...

  • my life motto. i have lost everything but my pc and money to buy smokes

  • the book and the movie were both great

  • I must admit when Norton is seated at that cafe, the first time I watched it; I thought it looked like Tyler's self-confident body language.

  • what does he mean when hes like

''self improvement is masturbation. now self distruction...''

  • Self-Improvement will make you feel better. But it won't really motivate you to change your life.

When you destroy your beliefs and values, and find out what you're really about - thats getting somewhere.

  • wow.. thanks!

  • I've been trying to figure this out myself. That totally makes sense..

  • look closely edward norton looks at the ad then at brads body, and the following scene is a fight with brad basically showing off his ripped body

  • I love it when a bus just rides up by me and i just walk right in.

  • i dont know about you guys but after watching this movie i just wanna look like brad pitt

  • yeah your right and i do, i cut my eyebrow and just got the little pinch lol tyler durden is my idol

  • in tyler we trust

  • isn't this the behaviour Tyler says we shouldn't have?

  • what r u talking bout??/

  • Comment removed

  • You think the movie is good? Read the book.

    Mindwad, brainstorm, death.

  • the book was really good

  • actually tyler looks like the guy on the poster

  • tyler looks 100times better.. but thats the point...

  • whats funny is brad pitt's body does look like that ad, in the movie

  • thats the point.

Tyler was everything the narrator wanted to be like: attractive, brave, badass etc.

  • aboslutey ryte 100% agree wid ya =p

  • I still dont get the point tho... why would nortons character need the validation that Pitt could make fun of and deny his own frame? It shoes neediness to me and not a quality of an AMOG.

  • hahaha

  • obviously norton wants to be everything tyler is and he was seeking validation of Pitt through the ad because he does not like himself and truly wants to look like that but if someone says it sucks who has it you feel better. Like a guy that gets laid all the time and tells you how empty and lonely different girls are all the time makes you feel better about never getting any. Tyler looks like the ad but makes fun of it, validating nortons weak looking character.... all in his own mind. Genius.

  • you are missing the point wider than Flight 1549 missed the airport

  • lol true dat nigga know nothing foo

  • What Tyler Durden ( Brad Pitt) says is "self improvement is masturbation, now self distruction"...hes interupted, he was ment to say, now self destruction is the answer, What it means is, Self improvment only makes yourself feel good, Which is ment when he says Masturbation. Now self destruction, means only after we have destoryed all the useless things that define us, only then will we be seen for who we really are, And not what the Gucci advert displays as a "real man"

  • I like masturbating... and my gucci underwear get me laid... replication is what most of is strive for.

But you just made perfect sense out of this scene. I just dont agree with it. Respect.

You might like reading "The Game" by Neil Strauss

  • W/e ever dude, we all have our own opinions, i agree with tyler

  • k sport... but Im living my opinion. Are you?

I like my nice truck, clean clothes and satin sheets... girls validating my masculinity daily with inquiring txt messages and fucking me. But you can go fight a bunch of guys shirtless in a basement trying to live your life through a movie.

    This conversation.... Is over.

  • Know this is a bit old... but just wanted to say, well played. However just cause you can fancily word it doesn't make your view necessarily better."Validating your masculinity"? You need a girl for that? Just look down and you've got your proof. There are 3 kinds of people, those who know, those who don't know, and those who know but really don't give a shit. I'm guessing you fit into the third category. Not that it's a bad thing, I see where you're coming from.

  • Materialistic luxuries aren't neccecary. Your nice car, Gucci underwear, or satin sheets dont get you laid more often... Being more modest and humble would definatly not hurt you.

  • "and my gucci underwear get me laid..."

If in fact the latter is true, believing the reason for it to be your Gucci underwear is hilariously ludicrous.

  • The quote is "Self improvement is masturbation. That's (referring to the poster) self destruction". (i.e. going to the gym is self-destruction)

Why is masturbation self improvement? Because it decreases our sex drive and increases our independence. Tyler preaches that we should "evolve" (spiritually and intellectually), and to think for ourselves. Decreasing our mindless, sex-driven thoughts, enables us to do so.

  • He is clearly anti-commercialism, and sex is often used at the forefront of commercialism. Or in other words, sex is the biggest tool used/abused in a commercial society.

Of course Tyler is not anti-sex. He is just anti mindless consuming and conforming, in a pathetic attempt to get sex...

  • Going to the gym with the intention of looking more attractive to the opposite sex is self-destruction, because all you're doing is improving your vulnerability to a mindless and conformist thinking pattern.

In a nutshell, don't get sucked in. Use your mind. Don't become a drone.

  • ok how would your underwear get you laid? usually a girl wont see your underwear until your already about to get laid?

  • thx i never understood that till now.

  • All good points, but the fact of the video, and the movie, is not whether or not Tyler's tan is fake, or which one of them is real, it's to get people to think. The fact that the video comments have come so far is just proof of success.

  • True :)

  • I guess this movie underlines an important truth to our existences.

I like Brad Pitt starring as this Tyler Durden, admire his body language also.

... oh crap, what the fuck am I yanking!? Got to get off my lazy ass and start training. Let's see what I'll look like at Pitt's standard (if being a man means THAT much for appearance.) =/

  • Note that the guy only pushes Edward Norton away and NOT Tyler.

  • Also note when they get on the bus, it's Tyler that pays the fare. In other words, that's what Norton sees Tyler/himself doing.

Like Tyler said later on, "You imagine yourself watching me," whereas he's actually doing the act he thinks Durden is doing.

  • ReplicantMan; that is an excellent point. i've seen the movie about 50 times and didn't notice the significance. have you read the book? if not, do so. you won't be able to put it down 'til you're finished

  • what i want to know is if tyler durden isnt real why does the bum put a hand on him like he is

  • So why is the title of this video "body language"?

  • i'd fight ghandi

  • you notice that the guy who walked by didnt notice tyler but when he passes the narrator he says "excuse me" to him

  • yea

why does he put his hand on tyler's chest though

  • because he is tylerf, therfore he put his hand on both of them/ only one

  • i love how hypocritical the narrator is.

"is that how a man should look?"

yet he pictured tyler, the symbol of anarchy, exactly like the "perfect man"

  • Tyler is not a hypocrit. The reason he is athletic is because of Fight Club. He trains and worksout to be in shape, ready for an asswhoping. The guy on the poster they make fun of is athletic because he wants to look good and impress.

  • No, thats wrong. He is not even real, he is the narrator's alter ego, he said himself that he looked like the narrator wanted to look.

  • Yes, you're right. He is the perfect image of how the narrator wolud like to be. Tyler himself says it in the scene of the hotel

  • The subconscience (tyler) is making fun of the narrator for picturing tyler to look like the calvin klein model by saying

"Is that how a man should look?"

Because at this point, the narrator still believes that's how a man should look, and is trying to un-convince himself through the use of his subconscience

He wants to look like a "douchebag", but whereas douchebags are douchebags because they TRY to look that way, he wants it to come naturally, not by fixing himself in the mirror.

  • Yer I thought this scene was suppose to be ironic like you say.

The Narrator is making fun of the calvin klein model, Yet tyler looks like a model (has the body) and is stylish. And yet he wants to be more like tyler

  • because he was built for fighting from edward nortons guys head

  • that is how everyone [mostly] wants to look

  • Eheh you're right too!

  • Look like brad pitt, or the male model for GUCCI Underwear?

  • u missed the point entirely. tyler IS the narrator, at the same time hes freeing the narrator from all aesthetic ties through the story's development. understand the narrator was still the IKEA boy when he first imagined tyler. so naturally, in order to be seduced by tyler into these ideals, tyler had to be the perfect symbol of what the narrator wants out of life. the narrator slowly becomes exactly like tyler, and tylers looks eventually dont matter to him. u r who u want to be, basically.

  • Those who read the book know how Tyler Durden works. Jack (Narrator) created Tyler subconciously because Tyler is free. He is without restrictions and full of ambition, and that is what Jack wants to be, but can't.

  • Uuuh, right. He ultimately can't make that final jump to actually BE Tyler Durden.

  • right said, you fucking spacecowboy lol

  • Tyler Durden body language? Ha... Brad Pitt always acts with a prop in his hands. Be it food, drink or cigs!

  • self destruction, now thats something I can relate

  • Self improvement is masturbation.

  • you're a moron

  • and you're probably a 12 year old who thinks its still cool to say threesome on the internet.

    amazing movie.

  • lol

  • having a threesome isnt masturbation though now is it?

  • is that what a man looks like? lol

one of the great movies, everyone can relate to it in different ways, i think that's why it has become so successful

  • Tyler's characteristics have nothing to do with his appeal, he doesn't model, he fights. In fighting do you think one holds the same beautiful face they had before they entered in it? Besides people the main character created him, to fit everything inwhich he wasn't or everything he wanted to be.

  • ed norton said, that they early decided tyler durden to be like a perfect man, (fake tan etc.), at the same time te narrator shall look likes he's fucked up....

so tyler should be the role model, and the narrator the anti-hero....

  • ed norton said, that they early decided tyler durden to be like a perfect man, (fake tan etc.), at the same time te narrator shall look likes he's fucked up....

so tyler should be the role model, and the narrator the anti-hero....

  • Tyler was a figment, who embodies what he thought to be rough and tough, "anti-consumerist, anti-superficiality etc, shaves his chest and has a fake tan"

hence why he was killed at the end

  • ok i understand what ur saying about tyler... but i dont understand what you mean by 'hence why he was killed at the end'. Are you saying he got killed because he was "anti-consumerist, shave his chest and gets a fake tan"??

  • wait, what if the tan is real?

    DEEP

thumbs down me if you want, but you folks are missing the point completely. You actually don't even need to discuss this because tyler clearly explains it in both the movie and the book

  • rofl

    my mind was just blown.

  • the tan was definitely fake. look at the scene when he sees ed peeking in on him and marla shagging. fake tan

  • Your missing it =/ tyler is the the perfect man made by advertising's narrator was made to belive that, thats how a real man should look like So he imagined himself as the perfect add

  • yeah i know that, I have seen fight club over 10 times

  • haha, wait what if it's real? DEEP, haha

  • hes an actor and not actually tyler, so i dont see your point.

  • Eventually the things you own start owning you. WOW deep.

  • its funny how they make fun of the guy on the poster but at the same time brads leen and deezed as fuck in this movie and u dont get that deeezed from sitting on the coach, so he musta been doing somthing lol.

  • Read the book. They work out to fight better, not to look better.

  • well done mr explanation

  • shatner, william shatener lmfaoo

  • yes that was what he said thank you for repeating it

  • This RSD guys are awesome

  • gud point if they ever happen 2 make max payne in2 a movie they should use edward Norton, he'd b perfect 4 it.

  • posted the same comment twice dummy

  • gud point if they ever happen 2 make max payne in2 a movie they should use edward Norton, he'd b perfect 4 it.

  • They are making a max payne movie, and they're using mark wahlburg. Also, it's a pg thirteen. And it's made by fox, written by a poor writer (not sam lake) and being directed by a bad director.

  • Anyone Else think that if Edward Norton had a deeper voice this movie wouldve had a very Max Payne type narration

  • You are not the car you drive and your not your fucking khakis!

  • self improvement is masturbation

  • Masturbation is self improvement

  • i liked it better when they actually said it, plz dont waste youtubes bandwidth like this, quoting lines from the clip

    thx

  • people quote the vid in single lines that appeared prominant or relative to them, they're quoting specific lines that are personal to them, its a means of expression, dont censor them motherfucker

  • :'c

  • then dont read them. or,, why is it so bad anyway? i dont get it. ok ok i got it i got it. shit i lost it

  • LOL FAG

  • brad pitt is the king fact

  • No, Tyler Turden is king. Tyler Durden is god. Tyler Durden is Satan. Tyler Durden is me. Tyler Durden is you. Tyler Durden is any man. Now here comes the tough part. Brad Pitt is not Tyler Durden. You are Tyler Durden. Tyler Durden is God. You are not God.

  • you can see that scene in a different way as well... because fight club had changed nortons character so much that he didn;t even give a shit that guy bumping into him

  • Isn't all that sometimes your still you and other times you see yourself watching me explained in the bedroom after he asks marla if they ever fucked near the end

  • both people are real, only nto people, they are personasadapted by The narrarators unstableand greif struckmind. he merely willmanifest either Tyler, or the narrarators pesonality into hsi one body. remember what you areseeing is what TYler himself is seeing hwo thigns happen, and he is crazy so half of that, for allweknow, may not have even happened. but looking at it that way takes away the story parts of it.

  • learn ENGRISH

  • if you have the dvd watch it again but turn the commentaries on the cast will teach you alot :-)

  • Th guy bumps into Norton because he can't see Norton, and the guy says 'excuse me' to Pitt and touching his chest, which is a sign that Norton is imaginary at this moment and Pitt is real, but actually looks like Norton, hard to explain

  • wow I never got that

  • haha, well...you know now, this happens a lot of times when they are together in the movie, watch the movie again and you'll get it

  • I got what you mean. Simply saying, at that moment he was being Tyler.

  • Best explanation: Sometimes he's still himself. Other times he IMAGINES himself watching Tyler. Therefore Tyler is not real.

  • good explanation, but not the best, I'm sure some people won't understand, but it's a good one

  • Thanks. I knew I shouldn't have said best.

  • aw whatever:P that doesn't matter, I still think it's a good explanation;)

  • well, the guy that said "excuse me" touch tyler's chest. so the narrator is the imaginary person in the bus

  • brad pitt was the imaginary person, the narrator is edward norton

  • in the bus tyler is the "real" person, you know, it?s like when tyler is having sex with marla, the narrator is watching in a imaginary way,i know that tyler is the alter ego of the narrator.

  • and so does everyone else, did you feel special when you wrote that you "know" that?

  • whatever, i don't give a shit...

  • yeah, I do. I use my laptop on the shitter.

  • They're both the same person, the narrator, but sometimes he is Tyler and sometimes he's Edward Norton. So they're each real at seperate times.

  • so wouldn't it look as though he was talking to himself all the time?

  • It does, and it shows that at the end of the movie.

  • thank you for the video plopiboo

hmm he may be paying for tyler but good theory anyway,i have never thought that way...

  • but good thoery anyway,i have never thouht that way...

  • umm you can od that though... cuz i pay for m yfriend sometimes.. so only 1 person needs to pay ^^ doesnt really count here

  • When Brad and Norton goes onto the bus you can see the narrator (Norton) only pays for one person.

This is a sign for that Tyler did never exist.

  • Good eye. Notice in the phone booth (condo explosion scene) there's a sign that says "no incoming calls".

  • Yeah. I saw it the third time I watched the movie.

  • thats the awsome about this movie. there are these small signs in almost every scene, yet u only notice them when u already know the ending!

i can watch this movie again and again because of this

  • "A guy who came to Fight Club for the first time - his ass was a wad of cookie dough. After a few weeks, he was carved out of wood"
