  • I use HP ZR24w and i think its best in his price. To the maker of movie: You play WoW ur cool :)

  • Thanks man, excellent demonstration, it has pretty much convinced me to go with one of Dell IPS models. For under half the price I could get a larger budget monitor by HP or BenQ, but it doesn't make sense to me why people are prepared to spend so many hundred on a system, but then skimp on the monitor when that is what they will always be viewing it through.

Aesthetically I also like the rectangular base and clean lines. IMHO round bases always throw out the look of a computer rig.

  • Quick review :)

    + Great response time

+ Great viewing angles for whites/colours

    + Good backlight bleed

    + Good black levels

    - Very narrow viewing angles for black (it's worst feature imho)

  • The 2209WA costs only about USD15 more than the U2311H here in Malaysia.

Which one should I go for?

I use my computer mainly for movies, and some music production and web design.

Should I give up color reproduction for the extra real estate or vice versa?

  • @avocadomilk2010 sorry for replying so long after ur comment but i would go with Dell 22" cuz i heard had better angles and colors in overal.

  • OFF: You gonna use that hammer for the second screen ? :)

    ON: Great review

  • TN panels are worst as you move your head lower, and a lot less bad as you move your head to the sides. Moving your head higher is moderately bad.

  • How do you like watching movies on your Dell?

  • @wrangleroooo I actually never watch movies on the screen but I do watch some HD online content and edit HD video. I have had the screen for over a year and still love its performance.

  • How big is the second screen? 19"?

  • @BrutalTurtle close, it's a 20" Samsung from 2005 or 2006.

  • Great video

  • Is this one better than the LG W2220P-BF? And what exactly is the CD for?

  • @nykvarnskurken Both LG W2220P and Dell 2209WA use the same display manufactured by LG. Difference between this two monitors is that Dell has usb ports, and LG has headphone jack, and Dell is a bit better looking and has a different stand. Oh, and LG is cheaper.

  • the LG also has HDMI.

  • whats the difference between this monitor and the Dell S2309W??

  • Thanks. By the way, i bought the 2209WA just a couple days ago, in part also because i saw your review. No complaints from me so far -- the colors seem solid when viewing off-perpendicular, but the black fades into sort of grey-ish shade. Since this is my first LCD panel (i dodn't even had a TN panel, just a plain old, low quality CRT), i'm not sure whether this is normal for eIPS panels (or this one in particular).

  • @cphadley:

What model is that mouse we see on you desk? I'm guessing Logitech by the color and shape, but i don' think i saw that one before.

  • @halingka It's a Logitech MX1100 wireless laser mouse. Still using it and it has been great.

  • thanks, great review.

  • Great review. Mine should be here by Wednesday, can't wait!

  • Great review - I'm sold! One small question, checked the specs on the Dell site but it doesn't mention if it has a 3.5mm Aux port to plug headphones / speakers in? I don't want to really use a sound bar. I'm going to run this on a mac mini - seeing you had a mac I guess there is no compatibility problems? Thanks.

  • Hey, can I turn the brightness to 11? LOL!

  • Do any of you know any good monitors for gaming. I'm a fan of world of warcraft and I need a really good monitor. I can spend below 500 dollars. Thats my limit. So please help me out with a good idea. Thanks! And I'm a hardcore gamer so yeh.

  • is this monitor still holding up well? thinking about getting the u2410?

  • get 2209wa, white glow issue is smaller.

  • My 2209wa is holding up great. Good as the day I got it :) I'm not familiar with the u2410 as I have not looked at new monitors since getting this one. I use a 2408WFP at work and it is fantastic tho I think it was rather pricey.

  • @illibball087 the monitor is still going strong :)

  • hey... hows the backlight bleed in Dell 2209wa? If there is, can it be eliminated by reducing brightness?

  • There is very very little backlight bleed on this display. It does get far too bright out of the box so I keep the brightness turned down some.

  • I think I might get a couple of these screens to replace my two monster Dell 21" Trinitrons. I'm very happy with the screens but damn they are huge and heavy and take up the ENTIRE desk. LOL.

  • Wow... that was... in depth. Probably about 8 minutes longer than it needed to be. ^_^

But since I'm interested in the IPS vs. TN panels this told me everything I need to know. Thanks for the wonderful review!

  • Actually this is very good TN monitor... But Dell is awesome!

  • The 2209 actually uses an e-ips panel and that's what gives it the better color accuracy and viewing experience.

  • Ha, ha... Yea I know. My bad.. I just wanna say that TN monitor that you have is actually good, because differences between TN and IPS are much greater! Nice review!

  • is not tn, lool is e-ips

  • OMG why don´t you read all my comments? :) I know that is e-IPS... Im an engeneer of graphics.... I JUST WANNA SAY THAT TN MONITOR USED FOR REFFERENCE IS ACTUALY BETTER THEN OTHER TN MONITORS. Just read my comments better! :)

  • sorry, i saw after i post that stupid comment, sorry again.

  • It is OK, buddy ;) It is nice that you wanted to help. I appreciate. Do not worry. Bye!! :)

  • Great review ! :-D

Really shows the difference between TN panels and not tn panels^^

  • What OS are you using? Couldn't rec it

  • It's Mac OS X

  • Reason whyb the monitor is so good is 8bit colors vs TN 6bit colours. Means that 8 bit displays 16.7m colors at the same tim while 6bit can only do 262k so better colors. Some 6bits can do some fancy tricks to display 16.7m but its all trickery.

  • Hy! Great review!

Just a few questions: Is this monitor good for movies?

Can you suggest me a good bigger monitor? (23-24) in the same price range?

    Thank you a lot.

  • nice review

  • Maybe its the settings and who looks at a monitor from top or from sides ? :p

  • @twoPEU Read the rest of the comments, it's more than just viewing angle, it's color depth. Besides, on most TN's you get hue shift even by moving your head up or down while looking at it straight on.

  • wow :p

  • VERY nice quality stand on this LCD. Not many monitors allow you to go up/down, surprisingly. The fact that it has tilt, height, AND twist is very impressive!

  • thx for the review

  • Hi there, thanks for the very clear review. I actually still don't see the point in purchasing an ips monitor over a tn one: the only advantage seems to be better viewing angles: something I won't need as I'm not sure I will want to look at my monitor from up a ladder or from extreme angles... So would you still recommend an ips panel for someone who will only look directly at the display? Any other advantages worth remarking (e.g. more text clarity, etc)? Thanks

  • You're not very well informed. The point isn't wide viewing angles as much as it is accurate color reproduction. The IPS display will have a much wider colour gamut than the TN display and also better contrast. This is why IPS and PVA panels have been favored by photo and video editors.

If you want more accurate colours, get an IPS or PVA panel display. If you want extremely fast response times, get a TN display.

  • IPS panels have wider color gamut. That means better and accurate color reproduction. Really rich and good contrast, or should i say - natural contrast. Reproduction of black and grey are more accurate. They have a little slower response time, but what you see on TN monitors as 2ms GTG (grey to grey) is marketing. This monitor has almost identical response time to e.g. TN panel with 2 ms. And also, really good wide viewing angle which is important.

  • Great review. Thanks.

  • Man, great review, thank you so much!

On a side note, you look like Colombian comediant know as "Jeringa" lol

Sorry about that, I needed to say it.

  • Very good review!

    Thanks you, man!

  • Few reviewers said if you like to work in dim light or in night then this monitor is not for you... due to bightness sensors, is that right?

  • Thank you Chris, that was very enlightening. I ordered two of these babies prior to watching your review and now that I've seen it I'm even more excited! :-)

  • So the only thing that makes it better is the wide angle??

  • more accurate color, TNs are actually 6-bit and use tricks to display make it look like 8-bit color

  • Tnanks a lot for this review!

Was looking for a monitor about for a month now.

    Now I've decided!

    Thanks again!

  • Thanx for the review. I actually bought this monitor last month. It is pretty nice. Looks good and good picture. However the IPS white glow made me returned it. I wish they solve this problem in later generations of this monitor cause apart from that it really is very good.

  • This helped a lot. Thanks.

  • Hi, awesome video 5*. I have a question for you; please take ur time to answer.

My hobby is photography, so I do lot of photo editing. I am looking for a new LCD. Because of budget constraints IPS panels are way out of my league. Then I came across the 2209wa and ur video. The only thing holding me back is the lack of 1080p, HDMI & 24". I heard LG is gonna release eIPS panels (LG supplies the panels to Dell & it had some displayed at CES). So do you think its worth waiting for new models?

    Sree

  • I would suggest holding out to see if a 24" eIPS becomes available at a reasonable price range if you are going to be working in applications where numerous tool windows will be accessed at once.

While the 22" is good about 90 percent of the time, there are occasions when I really wish I had the extra space of a 24". Working with a 24" UltraSharp all day at work makes me miss it when I come home. Granted I do have a second screen but in a NLE situation the larger the timeline space the better.

  • You can take the EIZO s2242w S-Pva Full HD 22 inch with S-Pva matrix if you like S-Pva type.

  • Comment removed

  • Nope, no problems with buzzing or whine at all. I have had these issues with other monitors and it can drive you nuts. This one is nice and quiet at 80% brightness.

  • thank you sir great review by the way

  • does this monitor hum or buzz at all when you lower the back light like many other monitors do?

  • i just found out about this monitor today and ordered it right away since im planning to get a completly new pc in the next couple of weeks :-) i just accidentally ran into it while surfing the internet.

Btw dell lists it for 322.01 euro

Im getting mine for 249 euro (which still is a lot compared to $ prices listed on the internet)

  • it'ns not an LED display :P im pretty sure thats what he said

  • Yup! I called it LED in the video. I added the correction to the description when I realized it. I'm sad to see this monitor has become so difficult to find these days. It was one of the best monitors for the money I have ever seen from Dell.

  • If you are looking at it straight on, is it worth buying?

  • this looks like an awesome monitor but i do have two questions.. Us this an HD monitor and is it better than the Dell S2209W cause i have been looking at it too.

  • "HD" is anything above 1280x720p, so yes this is still HD but its not FullHD, a marketing term for 1920x1080p.

this monitor is better than the 2209W, because the 2209wa is an eIPS panel vs the 2209W's TN.

  • good review, but i was ashamed to see you have world of warcraft on your computer, that was a big draw back.. shame. good review up until i saw WoW.

  • Haha! Epic comment. I actually canceled my WoW account a few months ago but I still have it installed. Got too cheap to pay for it as I hardly ever had time to play it.

  • aby dead or stuck pixels or backlight bleeding?

  • There is a slight bit of backlight bleeding on a completely black screen but nothing that is going to cause any problems day-to-day. No dead or stuck pixels on my display. Dell has a zero tolerance policy for that so you can always return it even if you have just one.

  • Nice review. Unfortunately I don't think Dell carries them anymore. At least I didn't see it listed on their (U.S) website.

  • great video review!

  • Great video, man i HATE TN panels, and they are taking over!

  • y are they taking over? are they better? i heard viewing angles are shit though

  • Greta video...

  • I see WOW. What server?

  • Why tie on youtube review? :>

  • Haha, good question :) I had just gotten home from work and had no yet changed into my comfy clothes.

  • Thx for a very informative & good VR! A bit of criticism: You need (and deserve) better videolighting and stop those fast arm & headmovements (= blurry on DV-Cam with bad lighting or try the "sportmode"). 5/5!

  • Thanks for the advice :) I always welcome suggestions and you rock for taking the time to share the tips. Thanks for watching!

  • Dude, don't take seriously any criticism from some disturbed human being calling himself Adolf Hitler. The chosen username speaks for itself.

Your reviews are about as professional-looking and thorough as I have ever seen. Almost too good for Youtube.

  • Thanx for this great review.

I am greatly interested in this monitor : great colors and viewing angles but I will use it primarily to play fast PC games, mainly FPS (like counter-strike, call of duty ect..)

I have doubts concerning the reactivity/ latency of the screen.

In your opinion should I go for a 2ms TN panel, like the the W220D or will the 2209WA be ok ?

Does a eIPS screen will be faster or equally fast than a 2ms TN ?

  • I'm considering purchasing this monitor for PC, 360, and PS3 use with HDMI to DVI adaptor, but is an eIPS panel with 1680x1050 resolution better than a TN with 1980x1050 for my situation?

  • sorry, I meant 1920x1080*

  • viewing angles will be better, but with the loss of some contrast over a tn panel.

  • You bring up a good point. From what I have read, this monitor doesn't do a great job of scaling. I have been playing some Plants vs. Zombies which changes the resolution in full screen mode and it seems ok to me but people are saying it is not the best.

I think the PS3 adjusts its resolution for the screen it's being used on but the 360 may not. The one good thing would be the better viewing angle compared to, say, the cheaper TN Dell 24" For what you are using it for TN is probably fine tho.

  • thx for this video.. im buying this monitor next week

  • Thanx for the vid!

I am really intrested in this monitor. The only thing that makes me wait is that I may prefer 24". I dont really know. Right now I am using 19" CRT.

Would you prefer if the monitor would be 24" instead?

  • If I could have afforded it I would have gone with the 2408WFP but the price was over double what I paid for the 2209WA. Plus, I already had a 20" Samsung to use as a second display. I say if you can afford the 2408WFP then go for it. If not, the 2209WA is still a fantastic screen for a great price.

  • 2408WFP uses an S-PVA panel made by Samsung, so it automatically inherits the downsides of that type of panel, ie gamma shift, high input lag, not so sharp text etc. Also the 2408WFP has a wide gamut color space, so images will look oversaturated in apps which are not color managed. For these reasons and also for the great price I would go for the 2209WA.

  • Looks like I made a good call by being cheap ;) I have had no issues with input lag on the 2209WA so it really did end up being great for the price. Glad I went for it over the 24" as for the price you could get two 2209WA for the price of one 2408WFP.

  • Since this is an IPS display, though an eIPS, is this an 8-bit per-color screen? In other words, true 16.7 million colors...

  • According to all the tech specs I have found regarding the screen it is 8-bit. Pre-release there was some concern about it only being 6-bit but it would seem we have full 8-bit :)

  • Thx for the video and the amazingly fast response! :)

Good to hear it seems to be 8-bit since I'm looking for a screen to edit photos. The price is surprisingly low considering the specs...it has got quite a lot of good feedback frpm users, so maybe I better hurry. :)

  • Glad the review was helpful. With the monitor on sale again I am tempted to pick up a second one for the price. When sitting in the other room looking in at my screens the difference between the TN and eIPS is very noticeable. Blacks are still black on the Dell but the Samsung looks really gray and washed out.

  • In the beginning I was more looking in the upper range above this, like 2408WFP or one from Eizo, but with this great price tag it could be worth taking a chance on buying one. If it doesn't work well for me when editing images, I could always have it as a backup display or use it in a dual setup.

  • Great review!

  • what model is your samsung? i have a samsung also and thinking of getting this. pm me thanks in advance. great review btw.

  • I will have to do just that. Thanks for watching :)

  • Nice Vid!!!! I've seen ur vid at viddler b4 posting here on youtube! and was about to make a correction on that LED mistake which u've confessed now!! well, could you post vidz with calibrated settings playing blu rays/DVDs/Games?
