The award for the worst bit of directing I have ever seen goes to..... Who the hell makes someone walk backwards, upstage, up a staircase to the climax of a song????? She's a legend....
Someone commented on the use of vibrato. There's is a balance to be struck, there. Lupone meets that balance to perfection. Dinah Shore, for instance, did not.
There's no denying what a riveting belter Ms. LuPone is - and I've seen her live in both SWEENEY TODD and GYPSY -like Merman, it's amazing how commanding & explosive her voice is even today, 25 years after OLIVER!
BUT, this is one of my fav. songs, and it's just SUCH A PITY that Patti doesn't show enough of the *VULNERABILITY* she exemplified when she sang "I Dreamed a Dream" in LES MIS a year later.
Even in GYPSY, often I felt she was simply belting without any kind of emotional nuance.
I much preferred Bernadette Peters, whom I saw in the 2003/2004 Broadway revival - despite the fact that Ms. Peters was having a little vocal trouble at the time, I thought she portrayed Rose as a much more believable and sympathetic character.
The only scene in which Patti's Rose had a real impact on me was when she was dressing Louise up for her first strip. I saw the mother in her. There should have been at LEAST a FEW MORE moments like that.
Bernadette Peter's Rose was a human being who was capable of occasional monstrosity - which I think is much more like it.
Patti Lupone's Rose was a monster whose moments of humanity were MUCH TOO FEW AND FAR BETWEEN.
As the protagonist, I don't think Rose can be the ultimate narcissist type or the borderline sociopath type (which is more like how I saw Patti play her).
I honestly couldn't sympathise with ANY of the characters in the Lupone revival - except perhaps for the 3 strippers.
What a talent. However, I thought she through it away in her musicality. She wasn't in "the moment" during this performance. I think that she could have sustained her high notes and the emotional moments of the song longer.
I do disagree there and I have a saying "You may not argue with the Tony" and she happened to be a nominee for just that role...Mind: you may have your own opinion and this one is mine.
I first became attentive to Patti Lupone and her charisma when she did a rendition of this song with a lot of character (not in costume) that the camera caught on a channel thirteen nyc membership drive. I think she did a spiel for people to call in to become a member.I wonder if that is lost video. do they archive?
That was from her one woman show she did a while back. That performance for PBS was taped in Palm Springs and is available. I will post for you soon if you like...
I had the opportunity to hear her do this live at the WILL AWARDS in WDC. Was truely amazing. So grt to see this now. Just saw her in Gypsy 2 nites ago. SO worth it. Everyone should go see her! Truely AMAZING!
@ImperfectlyPerfect2 On the Oliver OBC Soundtrack (The collector's edition) There's a bonus track with her singing this. If you'd like, I can post it!

She really doesn't know how to sing this song. In fact, her singing in general is just too much VIBRATO.
oldschoolbrawlers 1 year ago
singing any song with a limited vibrato can be unhealthy. singing unhealthily is the essence of not knowing how to sing any song.

Her singing is super human, its amazing. and the only people who make fun of vibrato are the ones who dont have vibrato bitch! so fuck you!

Angela Lansbury? She's kind of old now, though... Unless you meant years ago. I think she'd be excellent.

...I think this is the only character I've actually seen Patti LuPone do well.

Nah - I'm just saying she's an alto. Who can't really top Angela Lansbury's merry-murderess take on Lovett.

Though Angela won it for that role. Mind you I did love Pattis take on Lovett I think they both deserved Tonys. Patti is a musical goddess
