A Rolex is a mechanical watch, and AGE makes a HUGE difference in value as does having the Box and Papers. If you have the original Box and Papers you at least have a chain of custody with the watch and can attempt to verify its service history. A 26 year old Rolex that has not been properly serviced is not anything you want to buy, and at $1500 you probably got ripped off, because it would take near that amount from a Rolex service center to get it back to 100%.
He is right. I have been buying selling and trading. Last Datejust tutone I bought was at a pawn shop for $950 + tax. The band was a bit worn but I was able to swap it with an extra $100 for a nicer band with a friend that buys scrap gold. I buy these to trade old men that have old ugly subs or any ugly stainless sport model. Trading is great bc money is never discussed. Just yes I will trade or no I won't. If its yes great we go to my watch guy fast.

just bought one on e-bay for 1585 all in, with box, pristine condition not a scratch on it. I love it! Keeps awesome time! I have had several model 16233's the only difference being a sapphire crystal I think, and the dial is not baton markers, I love this watch, oh, it came with a recent service too! Keep your eyes out and you can find a good one in this range...
i bought one very similar to this last week, mine is 1986 model with diamond dial. its my first rolex and i want to make sure its genuine. is it normal for the strap to be very light weight? i was expecting it to be heavy for some reason

I've had about 5 rolexes over the years and have about come to the conclusion that they are designed for people that have more money than they do common sense. I bout my first in 1983 A SS datejust with a white gold bezel gave 1800 new from Carlye's jewelers, bought an 18k Steel and gold next in 85 for 2295 retail sold it a year later for 2000.00 bought another one it was 2495, then another 2795.oo every one of them lost at least a couple of minutes a month, it is the name man that is all,
Thanks for the tips. I've been in the market for a Datejust for a while but I've been quite reluctant to buy one of eBay because I've been concerned about scams and fakes. I guess if the seller has decent feedback and I can give them a call it'll really put my mind at ease.
Well one of the reasons why the Rolex is so high in the store is Rolex Techs are now getting $1k to service these things...Thai is totally outrageous.
Yep, Ebay is a great place to get a super deal on a used datejust...........until you find out the watch has cheap aftermarket parts or worse yet an aftermarket band, hasn't been serviced in 20 yrs, has had past water damage, is counterfeit, is stolen, etc, etc. NONE of which you will be able to find out until it's too late and your "rip" turns into a ripoff. .

hey mike, how easy is it for a jeweler to change out the dials with an 80s/90/s model datejust? How much should I expect to pay for a procedure like that (I'm sure it varies between jewelers)?
Really poor advice.......to recommend buying one of the most counterfeited items in the world from a complete stranger sight-unseen from an online website. Some of the counterfeits (replicas) are so good these days the outside is 99.5% perfect and you need to examine the movement to verify. Or it could be genuine but have cheap generic aftermarket parts inside done by an unqualified hack jeweler, or possible previous water damage, or improper servicing, or stolen, or who the hell knows what?
Nice watch, a real classic. Ebay can be kinda weird when it comes to these things, I've seen auctions for two tone datejusts like this one close out at $1000-3000. I'm looking to see if I can buy a two tone datejust like yours, and buy a diamond dial separately and put it in, because I know a diamond dial datejust would cost a LOT more, but the dial itself costs $200, sometimes even less than that.
Exactly, There is a seller, exoticleathers, or something to that note that sells diamond dials for $100-150. Mother of pearl mostly. Also change your filter to items ending soonest. Best match shows sellers that bascially spend the most money with ebay. You most likely will get the best deal from an individual seller, not some one like melrose jewelers, or becker
I used to wear nothing but Rolexes... bought my first one used in 1971 (a '55 Air King) for $75.. believe it! Then years ago, Rolex stopped selling gaskets and parts to independent jewelers, and started charging $400 for a cleaning and taking two months to do it on top of that.
That did it for me. A good watch is a good watch, and Rolex is a good watch. But, no watch is worth thousands, and no cleaning should cost hundreds.
right..... your buying experience is? take 3 seconds on ebay, there are plenty under 2K. there is one for $1700 with a buy it now. I think i paid $1400 cash for the watch in the video.
Thats not too bad actually, I mean Generally a aftermarket Black MOP dial is going to run you at least $250, Unless you want to wait and find a steal on a datejust for $1600-$1700 on ebay and then upgrade the dial later.
I would say its not a bad buy, a new aftermarket bracelet is going to run you $350 or so. At least you can scrap the old bracelet for $150. Keep the old buckle and jsut replace the bracelet with an aftermarket one.
HI mike i was wondering should i pay 2200 for a datejust like yours 16013 with black mother of pearl with diamond dial and 2 tone jubliee band beacause the old band was wore out
I am a bit of a deal seeker to say the leaset. I do not belive getting it serviced at an auth dealer is worth what they charge. It is my understanding that all auth dealers charge the same amount for servicing. $500 + Now grated they do do a good job. But a rolex service is not any thing a true watch maker would hvae trouble with. I pay $75 for an overhaul. Most other watchmakers are $150-$200. The watch u have is probably worth $1500 so spending $500-$700 on a service doesnt make much sense.
Hey Mike, great video. I have a question, I was left 2 authentic Rolex Datejust, one like that 2-tone your speaking of, and an all SS verision. What is the value of the all SS version. Its a 1978, I haven't taken off the band to make sure, but I have reciepts and warrenty papers. Also, how much do you recomend I should pay to service them at an authentic dealer?
