this was recorded 1 year before i was born and i think it is awsome ive even just managed to pick up 7 inch single in mint condition for 10p here in the uk
Take a minute & realize that this song was recorded in 1977. 1977!! It was absolutely ground breaking. It still sounds as amazing & as timeless today as it did then, and he's done this over and over. Brilliant doesn't come close to describing this man's talent.
A great song expressing a sad moment in time for him, whilst in Genesis his fantastic performances on stage and lyrical creativity captured the audience. I am a great fan of Genesis before and after Peter Gabriels input, I grew up with the music, played to me by my mother. I still follow both and regularly play the cd's in my car, I always reach my destination before I know it. Life's a journey, but good company can ease any bump in the road.
I was feeling part of the scenery ( Genesis' elaborate stage shows - he wasn't enjoying it anymore )... I walked right out of the machinery ( Genesis ). I think Peter Gabriel genuinely felt hurt at the time of his departure, given the less than sympathetic responses from his fellow band mates - hence why he wrote this superb song. Solsbury Hill is in Somerset, a place he would go sometimes to chill out and reflect.
Peter Gabriel Wrote This Song About His Departure From Genesis. Everybody Would Tell Him The Band Was At The Top And That He Was Crazy To Leave. The Other Members Wanted To Change Genesis' Sound. Peter Gabriel Didn't Want A More POP Sound. So He Left And Phil Collins Replaced Him. "Today I Don't Need A Replacement, I Tell Them What The Smile On My Face Meant. My Heart Going: BOUM, BOUM, BOUM. Hey' I Said: You can Keep My Things They've Come To Take Me Home"
great response Papa...

With all the home movies, I thought it was a love letter to his parents thanking them for giving him such a loving and rich childhood.

I don't think it was a religious theme specifically but that mind set would really work nicely with this music.
