----The Lake Pontchartrain Causeway, northern bascule bridge sections
----The Long Beach Commodore Schuyer F.Heim vertical-life bridge
----The Long Beach short harbor bridge [about 150 feet long] by above, carrying the same roadway that once carried the former Badger Street/Henry Ford Avenue bascule bridge [which didn't have grating]
----ALL Missouri River and Kansas River cantilever bridges.
The inner lane grates are used to give the suspension span additional strength against strong wind gusts. In other words, it allows for the wind to pass through the span rather than having a completely solid deck that the wind would circle around- and possibly cause the deck to oscillate.

Many bridges across the country use those:
----The Lake Pontchartrain Causeway, northern bascule bridge sections
----The Long Beach Commodore Schuyer F.Heim vertical-life bridge
----The Long Beach short harbor bridge [about 150 feet long] by above, carrying the same roadway that once carried the former Badger Street/Henry Ford Avenue bascule bridge [which didn't have grating]
----ALL Missouri River and Kansas River cantilever bridges.
I love the sound those make BTW.
