I've got one that is almost 4 years old and she makes that noise sometimes while she is sleeping.

Yes, squirrels make that noise. Usually in respect to territorial issues. Often as a way of warning an intruder, that it, or they, know its there. As well, it lets the other squirrels know somethings up as well...

Cranky squirrel! I've usually observed them making that noise when a cat is lurking nearby.
