What you failed to mention is that Don't Give Up is a Peter Gabriel song. He wrote it and it appeared on his album So in '86. Even that idiot Gaga herself failed to acknowledge this when she said about the cover: "..it's about time people learn something about Kate Bush." Kate is my all-time favorite artist - hands down. That said, Gaga is a classically trained pianist that also studied art and theater, and DOES write and co-produce her own music. I honestly feel that Gaga has far more in line with Kate than with her other current contemporaries...which is why I actually like Gaga.
I remember reading years ago that Kate was very uncomfortable with the possibility that she might be 'sold' as a sex symbol. And as far as I know, many of her fans don't see her that way... Including me. I was 8 when I first saw her on TOTP so I couldn't really fancy her. It's probably true that Kate wouldn't be so successful if she didn't look good. But there's tons of magic in her songs that doesn't require eyes - or a penis :)

OK, So I listened to the Lady Gaga cover of Don't Give Up, and it's alright (it's better then anything Gaga has done, and will do). Comparing Kate to Gaga is like comparing shit to gold. Kate being gold and Gaga being shit. Lady Gaga is an mediocre singer, she screams and goes off key a lot (Kate also screams, but at least Kate is in tune unlike Gaga). Kate can hit the highest notes I've ever heard with her four octave voice. Gaga is awful live. So I'll go with Kate.

Even though I admit Kate Bush is a far better songwriter, piano player and singer, you are being a bit unfair to Lady Gaga. She DOES write all her own songs (at least co-write with one or two other people) and does few cover versions (Don't Give Up the only one that comes to mind). She also co-produced her albums (admittedly with a bunch of other people)

I'm not a Kate Bush fanatic, and I really like some of Lady Gaga's work, but Kate isolates you in your own world with her lyrics and music, while Lady Gaga gives you good quality chart sugar lovingly prepared in a pop laboratory near you. It's not hard to see which product will reach its expiry date first. Sorry Gaga.

I have watched both Kate videos and Gaga videos. Kate bush uses talent and experiance to turn out great music. Gaga uses sex and programmed music. She has been out for two years and has already more or less taken over the world and broken countless records with her sucess. Lady Gaga DOES write her own music & is extremely talented. She worked fucking hard to be where she is now. Her cover of "Don't Give Up" wasn't put on her album and it wasn't even directed by her. On the other hand, Gaga's albums are completely written by her and done under her direction. I love Kate Bush as well, but don't have an opinion if you don't know what you're talking about. Urgh, why are you reducing both Kate and Gaga to their bodies? The music is what is important. I love both. Kate's music has way more depth and invention but then again, Gaga is trying to appeal to a wider audience and she is just starting out. As a pop star, she is unusual as well as talented. Have you seen any of the videos of her playing piano? And Kate isnt a classically trained opera singer. Why get angry about a perfectly decent cover version when you clearly dont care about either artist?

Even though I admit Kate Bush is a far better songwriter, piano player and singer, you are being a bit unfair to Lady Gaga. She DOES write all her own songs (at least co-write with one or two other people) and does few cover versions (Don't Give Up the only one that comes to mind). She also co-produced her albums (admittedly with a bunch of other people)
Funny thing is, Kate Bush DIDN'T write Don't Give Up.

I'm not a Kate Bush fanatic, and I really like some of Lady Gaga's work, but Kate isolates you in your own world with her lyrics and music, while Lady Gaga gives you good quality chart sugar lovingly prepared in a pop laboratory near you. Kate Bush was discovered and mentored by David Gilmour of Pink Floyd. She was one of the first people to use the Fairlight CMI synth, which was basically the sound of the 80's. She also invented the headset microphone, which was later used by artists like Garth Brooks.
