The creators of this show must of thought the audience were 6 years old to serve up rubbish like this, thank god for The Prisoner and Patrick McGoohan to show how to make a hip spy thriller with brains.
Does this mean that Emma spent the night in Steed's room and not hers? I always thought she did, because on the way she acts the next day on her way to her job as a teacher at the school. You just know that something had to happen that night before that made her so happy the next day. haha.
I thought of the same thing my friend when I first watched this episode. I guess Steed respects Mrs. Peel too much to do that. But it doesn't hurt for him to try. *winks*
Yeah I know she's married and that her husband turns up later in the end, but he suppose to be dead here so that makes her a widow here in this scene. So she could have moved on with another man if she liked, but she really doesn't and when her husband was found alive years later and returns thats when she decides to return with him, because she's a faithful and devoted wife.
@MrsEmmaPeel07 I think British law wouldn't have allowed her to close the estate w.o. the spouse's body being found. I do know it's a huge problem here in France. If your spouse goes into the woods & kills himself & the body is never found, you can never claim the insurance, benefits, remarry, or anything, yet are still responsible for all his debts & obligations. I know a family this happened to. His bones turned up in the woods 25 years later. Literal starvation for family, daughter dead.
@slobomotion I agree. Emma should haven't done all of those things intill they had pure proof that Peter was dead. Maybe they did find Peter's plane where it crashed and noticed that nobody could have survived that. So they assumed his body burned completely to ash or something. But he could have jumped from the plane before it crashed, but somehow survived, but accidently bumped his head and couldn't remember who he was. Amazon jungle village people could have found him and took care of him.
@MrsEmmaPeel07 Well, she romps plenty, but I always had the feeling she risked her neck all the time cuz she was essentially heartbroken. England was quite hypocritical. Did you see the movie SCANDAL? I sort of knew someone who knew the real Stephen Ward and assured me he was a cad, and he couldn't stand the heroic spin put on the character, but having walked on the wild side in my time, I say it makes a good story, and regular people cannot imagine being in such situations.
Thats an interesting theory on why Emma may love being in the middle of danger. I always thought it was, because she just loves the excitment and being independent in Steed's world and career. I see Emma being heartbroken over Peter's death, but I see her being strong and moving on from it. Then she met Steed and his world of being a professional agent for the goverment. She loves independence. With Peter I see her not getting as much of it as she did with Steed.. She'll mostly be a house wife.
@MrsEmmaPeel07 Miss Emma Knight ran a huge corporation, then married Mr. Peel. She was never a professional agent, only always a "talented amateur." Remember her reaction to seeing him again? Just popped into the convertible, no passionate kiss, just a happy smile of complicity. Women with broken hearts take the biggest, the craziest risks. I know!
I know she wasn't a professional agent like Steed and only was a talented amateur. I was just saying that her helping with the missions brings excitment to her life that a woman in her time really didn't get. I already knew she use to work a large company that her father owned before he died and that she stoped running it herself and had someone else take over for her after she married Peter. I'm not disagreeing with you. I'm just saying there could be other reasons why she took the job.
@MrsEmmaPeel07 It's an interesting character, to be sure. The smart women get married. Always have, always will. She also knew how to delegate, another good sign. She kind of reminds me of Simone de Beauvoir, who was actually a rather horrible person, but did her own thing, as did Marlene Dietrich (another monster -- had a friend who knew her and her family well). The Emma character had many angry suitors, remember? All want to possess such a woman, and only polyandry works.
@slobomotion I'm just letting you know that I wasn't arguing or disagreeing with you earliar over this topic about Emma. I do love your theory on that she could be a risk-taker and thats maybe why she took that job. It's just sometimes hard to believe that someone like Emma would just use Steed's career as a cover up for her hurt feelings for Peter. Yes I agree. There are a lot of woman out there who do take crazy risk, because they are sad. Emma could be one of them. :)
@MrsEmmaPeel07 I seem to be a man-magnet, and don't even really like them, generally. (Sometimes females try to possess me, too.) I can only speak for myself, but I have taken crazy risks because that's my warrior personality. I'm sort of like the Viking wife who gets given the keys to wear, does the serious stuff while the little man goes and plays, maybe never comes back, ha ha ha! xo
@MrsEmmaPeel07 SCANDAL is quite good. It works on many different levels and there's plenty of commentary in there about Britain in the early 1960s. It's loosely based on facts, the acting is top rate, and if you like sharp looking females who are wily and different, you'll get an eyeful here! Unfortunately, Christine Keeler's life was quite ruined. Mandy went on to a fabulous life, career and marriage in Israel and wrote some good novels!
@slobomotion Well if she's really that heart broken over Peter's death wouldn't she just kill herself instead of just putting her life at risk during Steed's missions? lol. Because with her fighting the badguys back doesn't look like she's doing it because she's heartbroken. Mostly because she wants this job for the excitement , independence, and for helping Steed to protect the people of Britian for the Goverment.
@MrsEmmaPeel07 I dunno, I've done some crazy things. I infiltrated a lotta places and spied on 'em. It was very dangerous, especially organized crime, banking, government agencies, big corporations. I may be kind of a thrill freak. Whenever something really terrifies me, I have to go do it until I am no longer fearful of it. xo
@sebastian1313 I recall a few really sexy ones, even had a rather sharp male elementary teacher, a bit weird, though, a former Marine. Mrs. Freed had stunning hair, looked great in her skirts just above the knees, was brilliant at math and spoke French, too, very well! So there were some pretty fascinating exceptions out there in the Rust Belt for we Ohio kids! I know a lady in the States who is a BOMBE and she is also a domina! If only those art students of hers knew! Yeow!!!!

In France, this series is called CHAPEAU MELON, BOTTES DE CUIRE. And the voice of Peel is horrible, like a dumb little girlie!
