  • interesting tip but shouldn't we be tightening them bolts across from each other, like everyone else teaches?

  • If you just do this and make no other adjustments, isn't that the shells lowest possible pitch? Similar to bob gatzens bass drum tuning method?

  • Notice at 1:16 the video cuts, suddenly the drums tuned perfectly.... joker

  • @hughdavis1985 don't be such an ass, it is possible to tune fast like that, i've done it (gets much harder with single ply heads though..

  • @hughdavis1985 obviously to save time

  • its bad to not go in a star pattern that can warp the drum

  • The Ruffles will disappear quicker if there is Onion Dip!

lol ,.. just kidding of course! great tips! I bet those drum heads make it even easier to tune too! I have yet to try these, I am partial to the G2 Coated heads, but next time I buy my heads I am gonna grab these and give 'em a go! they sound amazing and I have heard only good comments about them. Cheers! and Happy Drumming :)

  • This is a video of QUICK tuning tips. I doubt any of you could tune a drum to perfection in 2 minutes.

  • I am glad my floor tom don't sound like ass. I guess he likes souding like ass.

  • the sound of the floortom aint beautiful..

  • the correct way to tune is in a star pattern, not clockwise

  • @gonadiator The correct method is the one that works for YOU.

  • THANK you, Mr Kennedy. This is just perfect and how it SHOULD be. Have you ever watched a Bob Gatzen tuning video? It's longer than a Broadway play. Tuning should NEVER be such a laborious task. Forget about the turns, taps, twists and backflips and just tune the drum already! :)

  • Yup!

  • if you put a little center in the middle?

  • <3 floor toms

  • "ruffle area". :-)

  • that last floor tom hit was the best floor tom ive ever heard

  • That is what I do for all my toms and it is quick and my toms Always sound the best. Same thing with the bass drum and just loosen slightly. super quick super sweet sound.

  • @33party33 LOL IKR I WAS JUST GONNA COMMENT LMAO

  • anal lol he likes that work.

  • Hahaha, he said anal!

  • @crean625 what part?

  • @AlecBFlores 0.48

  • Ok, by following these steps you will have a drum that "sings" as he put it.

How about a drum that "sings" well? Those drums sounded awful.

  • For the average player you'll know that when you gig on someone else's kit...you'd be lucky if you get what you feel is the right sound!

At the very least though you work to get close enough to the right sound! If he were talking about getting the perfect sound he'd also mention tuning the resonant heads!

Also the whole opposite lug thing isn't necessarily the only way to do it. As with anything, it's not just about the method it's about the result!

  • what about coted heads

  • i wouldn't recommend this technique in any way...

if you're already tuning the thing might as well base it on, first finger tightening the lugs from a lose state and then base it on a predetermined number of rotations based on the key once lugs a tightened as firmly as possible with the fingerzzzzzz

Tuning your head based on visual perception is just wrong in my opinion.

but i have to handed to Will - this method is, how shall i put it -creative-.

  • @shootsbraw What you missed was that he was talking about tuning quickly when on someone else's kit. e.g. 5 mins whilst setting up for sound check. Your method is 100% correct if your starting with new skins and you have lots of time.

  • Yeah, this is nothing new, of course. I have heard this also called " Just Past Wrinkle". It is especially helpful with bass shells and larger toms. I don't believe the video though, obviously they edited out the longer tuning time. Watch it closely and you can see that they stopped and spent some time and edited it out. There is no way in hell he got that pure fundamental note in the time shown.

  • This works very well. The Evans drum head official website actually shows this (check it out if you're new to drumming or need a brush-up on tuning). At Evans, their instructor calls this LPP, or Lowest Possible Pitch. It essentially brings the head to the lowest point at which the head will vibrate without being loose enough to rattle or flap. This, in turn, is the lowest possible pitch that the drum shell will vibrate at, and is a good starting point. You can fine tune UP from there.

  • without being too anal about it

    lol

  • ... this works only if the heads are new(er)

  • He kind of reminds me of Carlton Banks. Great Drummer.

  • this tuning technic works realy great. i tuned my complete kit in this way and it sound´s great.

  • he reminds me of turk from scrubs

  • epic tunin tip thanks

  • i learned technique on a Dave Weckl video. Use it all the time and I love the results. Easiest tuning method I've found and i've tried a ton (tune to a note, drum dial, etc). the only thing I do differently than Will here is tighten one lug then go across the drum to the opposite lug instead of Will just going clockwise.

  • ahhhhahahah he said anal!

  • @noah112234 wow.... what are you six

  • no, it's not beautiful in fact..

  • Don't worry Will. You can never be too anal.

  • who gives a crap whether its on legs or stand. i know it affects tonal value a little but its really not a big issue to be fightin about

  • A floor tom can either have it's own legs or hang on a stand, for example combined with a cymbal. :)

  • mmmm i'll this technique next time i tune my drums just to see what happens

  • what about placing the head properly? because after using wont it stretch like all heads do?, or is this just a temporary tuning device?

  • oh HELL YEAH! Will Kennedy has the best sounding drums around.

  • you got that right

  • its on the ground

  • um no its not, its on a stand dumbass

  • um no its not, its a floor tom dumbass

  • obviously, but its not on the floor, its on a stand dumbass

  • no, it has legs. no stand

  • Legs stand dumbass, your just picking a fight, so fuck you dont reply because I wont, stupid little bitch

  • LOL! XD

  • Organic- you qualify as a MORON- the drum is called a floor tom- there is NO other name for this drum- it has always been called a FLOOR tom and it will always be called a FLOOR tom- and you can't be all that bright if 1. you don't understand that or 2. you've decided you want to change that.- period.

  • yeah man I know, its obviously a floor tom but a floor tom has legs so therefore the drum is not on on the ground like the one dood said..... go smoke a joint

  • i LOVE this discussion!

  • hahahaha

  • LOL, I forgot about this, ahaha... but point is that yes its on the ground but the legs raise it up from the ground so therefore the tom is standing, I mean wtf do people think legs do? THEY STAND , but whatever it still sounds like shit no matter what, he needs to tighten the head up, the whole point of the convo was to prove that the bottem head is in fact NOT touching the ground and he is a shitty tuner....... now im gonna go smoke a joint, and I think all of you people need to also, ahaha

  • the ec2 heads make it easy. its hard to mess up tune'n them.

  • i disagree with this method, you will get more life from your heads if you do this method, THEN tighten to about 3/4 crank on each lug

  • ...how come more people dont do this? this seems so easy

  • Shouldn't he be going to the opposite lugs while he turns his drum key? It would seem to me that you'd be more likely to get an uneven head or lug tension going around the drum instead of going to opposite lugs, particularly when bringing the head up to a resonant tension.

  • some times u can break the rim by tuning around the drum. it is far better to use a cross patern

  • @RollingStone000 Actually you should do your method for the first few turn rotations. Then you do his way, well at least thats what Bob Gatzen said

  • @RollingStone000 yep but that wouldn't be quick :)

  • @RollingStone000 I'm sure he would if he had the time, but he's talking about a real quick tuneup when you arrive at a gig venue with a kit you've had no time to tune.

  • @RollingStone000 he "should" do whatever works for him.

  • @RollingStone000 Going to the opposite lugs while using this method doesn't work that well, some ripples can disappear while turning screws not even adjacent to them, and then reappear later. This method isn't for the long term, it's a quick way to set up a kit, use it for a couple of hours, and that's it.

  • this works better with clear heads.. thats why im getting EC2s next!

  • Will Kennedy lol is the MAN!
