You wanna crown Ric Flair the greatest wrestler ever...that's dubious. It's scripted. You wanna name the greatest FIGURE in pro wrestling history...it's not even close. His name is Hulk Hogan. Before smarks and work rate and five-star matches...all for a 'sport' that is predetermined...Hulk Hogan was drawing 33 million people on a FRIDAY NIGHT to watching wrestling on network TV. He was on the cover of Sports Illustrated, made it viable to watch on MTV, etc etc. No one has or will top his legacy
And if you say it was all Vinnie Mac...then why weren't the Ultimate Warrior, Randy Savage, etc etc able to draw the same as Hogan did when he would take his movie or other sabbaticals? NO ONE else could have made wrestling as big as Hogan did. Period. You couldn't have substituted Magnum TA, Orndorff, Savage, Nikita Koloff, Lex Luger, etc etc and drawn what Hogan did. That's a slap in the face to the impact he had. McMahon didn't go after him as hard as he did for nothing.
This is the best era in wrestling. Attitute comes in at a close second. But seriously any mid card wrestler from this era is a bonafide Legend. I hight doubt 5 years from now we'll remember R Truth!
My first wrestling show. I was 13 years old. I still remember laughing about Jesse's outfit. And how impressed I was by this powerful voice of Vince McMahon. Then I saw Hogan, Honkey, Macho and though: "man, superheros really exist"! Pure fun from the first minute to the very last. This whole show got me hooked and never let me go again
Honky Tonk Man was a piece of garbage shit who these days is a washed up has been and also a fucked up asshole in real life....In 80 % of his shoot interviews, it seemes like the fucker has nothing good to say about anyone....Randy Savage and Honky Tonk Man should not even be mentioned in the same sentence...Honky Tonk Man equals piece of shit.....while Randy Savage was one of the greatest of all time.
At the same time having new programming can be a godsend as it quenches the thirst for more action, as long as the angle is good and the matches are good. But they at least have the better matches on the PPVs most of the time. But they could maybe drop half of the PPVs to make the storylines more intriguing.
Now with new live programming once a week for both brands, the stories can flame down quickly. At least there is a brand split 'cause in the ATTITUDE ERA, two new tv events a week leads to too much filler. The Monday Night Wars can carry some blame to this.
The fact that we were only allowed to see someone like Hogan perform live on a PPV
3 or 4 times a year back in the day, made the event more interesting. The fact that we can get a taste of the upper card and high mid card on a special prime time event such as SNME was also a treat as it was the only way to get a free TV match with the Hulkster.
The Honky Tonk Man gimmick was such a lame gimmick, but got some reason it worked. He was so unlikable that it just seemed to fit. It wouldn't work with today's garbage wrestling, they wouldn't know what to do with such a gimmick.
Different era different talent. That's the difference
Today's talent is all flash and no substance.. That's hardly the promoters fault when the talent are useless for anything other then pulling off a few flashy moves.
They try everyone out and what happens when they give people a push?
9/10 times the guy or girl blows it.
Back then the locker room was a group, not individuals "for the most part", you were working for your boss, not working to only get yourself over.
They wasted so much time showing Hulk Hogan working out to Jake Roberts music that they didn't even have time to show the Hart Foundation vs Strike Force match they were talking about!
There was so much personality back then, so many colorful and entertaining wrestlers! Now it seems we got nothing but bad attitude and steroidal freaks. Am I ALONE or does anyone else also miss the good old days when wrestlers were still people and not just a bunch of steroid using monsters?
Man, watchng this video and seeing the good old wrestling and even the old commercials really makes you see how downhill everything has went. The 70's, 80's and 90's were the best no doubt. Music Nowdays is almost nothing but Metal and Rap, Wrestling is boring now IMO, Most TV is nothing but "Reality". Video Games are almost nothing but shooters and sports. This was back when we had Ninja Turtles, Power Rangers Good, Interesting Wrestling, A Variety in Music. Good Disney Shows and much more! =)
@OldSchoolRasslin You're not kidding. It was the first time wrestling was on prime time TV since the Dumont Network. You either have to old to remember that or -- like I do -- remember reading that fact in the Newspaper (sorry kids, there wasn't an internet then). This was an event that CANNOT be duplicated today because we get 2 hours 2x a week of major matches & 10 PPVs a year. All my classmates were buzzing about this & even my dad watched it with me because it was such an event
Ahhh, the good ole SNME theme song. This was the glory era, wrestling had passion and creativity, I mean as a kid on sat nights i was building up for hours until 11:30 pm lol

what the? coors light!?! lol. its strange that WWF 80's showed coors light, then now wwe dont show beers anymore, its bad example for the kids bec most kids watch wwe more than adults so I guess its just proper way and changed everything.
Maybe Hogan never wrestled much in the States or held back up and coming wrestlers...but dammit, he's still the greatest name in the history of pro wrestling. No one else is going to get 33 million people to watch wrestling on a Friday night again. I doubt a pro wrestler will ever be on the cover of Sports Illustrated again. Or main event a match that takes place live on MTV. Or sellout at 93,173 seat building. Etc, etc., etc. Anyone puts Austin above Hogan is either pubescent or insane
True, but it's more semantics...they were in the big feud during that time and it was more about picking the champion and his main challenger as opposed to ONE guy that put asses in the seats. Just my take.
The only thing that bugs me about todays WWE shows is that there's to much "mic work". It's great, when you've got someone like The rock on the microphone, but last Raw... what was it: 3 matches, and the rest promos, ads and endless blabla by Randy Orton, Edge and Shawn Michaels? boooring. Especially Randy Orton's 10 minute-monolog was horribly boring. Give me some wrestling.
I agree. It was a bad day when the WWF first gave mikes into wrestlers' hand - especially two feuding wrestlings have each their own mike - instead of having interviewers monopolize the mike. I think this practice started with Shawn Michaels.
Hmm... Wrestling was always recgonized by alot people in the 30, 40, 50 and 60 as a sideshow, but finally in the 80s it got alot respect by alot people, but you have to thank Vince for that.
"Elizabeth has got nothing to worry about but Honkytonk Man has EVERYTHING to worry about YEAH THATS RIGHT!" Excellent promo by quite possibly the best wrestler of all time.
lmao @ Honky Tonk Man's face at 8:50 when Randy Savage's music started playing... did he not realise he was there for a wrestling match and would have an opponent? lol
Vince MacMahon was at the top of his game...back when he REALLY knew how to promote matches and use wrestlers. Nowadays..Vince has simply LOST IT. WWE is no longer watchable these days.
@damron13 something you need to remember & account for here. Back then, McMahon could draw a fued out over months. Hogan/Andre 4 times over a year, WMIII, Survivor Series, a special NBC event/WMIV. HTM/Savage took months to build up as well. Today, its a different game, they have 10? PPVs a year. You just cannot build tension over a long period like they used to as easily. Only recent example was HBK/Taker II. But with 2 hour show every week, no jobber matches, its not the same
@damron13 Vince wasn't booking then. George Scott was and he's responsible for the original WWF boom. George Scott knew wrestling 101. Vince just knew how to market it.
I remember always watching Saturday Nights Main's Event. This is when wrestling was FUN! I love the wrestlers. Jesse the Body and Vince did an exceptional job commentating. I miss the GOOD 'OL Days. Today's wrestling=Sex, profanity, lame wrestlers and SUCKS!
This music was used before Jake "the Snake" Roberts used it. I think this "Main Event" was before WrestleMania V. I remember watching this on TV that night...this was when the WWF really knew how to set up a match.
Oh how I miss those great "retro" days of the World Wrestling Federation.
Rumor has it that Savage was supposed to get the I-C title here and Ted Dibiase was supposed to win the WWF title at Mania IV (Hogan would win it back at Summerslam 88). But Honkytonk pulled a tantrum and threatened to jump to WCW/NWA with the belt that weekend. Therefore, Honky kept the strap and Randy Savage got to win the WWF title at Mania as a way to make it up to him.
That what you said is the truth and the WWF was all the better for it. I said it before and I'll say it again, in retrospect Honky Tonk, as much as I didn't care for him back then, did Vince (and Randy via extension)a huge favour by not dropping the IC belt that night. Randy was ready for the next level. DiBiase got a test run with the title, the test failed. What I mean by test run is that on house shows subsequent to this event, DiBiase was recognised as the champ. It didn't go over that good.
Honky looks good. Decent shape for an old guy. I think he was fairly young when he won the IC title in the 80s. He never was much of a technical wrestler, so I don't think WWE is asking much out of him.

I'm surprised that HTM is back after all he's said in past shoot interviews. I think he's in to put Santino over and then he'll be gone again.

Honky looks good. Decent shape for an old guy. I think he was fairly young when he won the IC title in the 80s. He never was much of a technical wrestler, so I don't think WWE is asking much out of him.
