  • you look like AngryTestie

  • I wish we could get a rerelease of AAL with you playing all the drum parts. The synthesized drum sounds just don't even come close.

  • This torpid, tepid, tintinnabulation takes triteness, triviality to towering, teetering terminals. 'Tis trash. Tico Torres triumphs, trouncing Tosin's tiresome tambourinist, transcending this tedious, trebly timbre.

  • @MIKEPORTNOYING ........wut......

  • @MIKEPORTNOYING rjgngfwlgfnghjtn?

  • What ride is that?!

  • Comment removed

  • @DrumTam555 He is the actual drummer of AAL.

  • what ride?

  • @nystedrulez21 The big one in the middle of his kit...

  • @TheHAMMER91 well hur dur dumbass. i ment "what kind of ride."

  • How come I don't have 200,000+ views on *my* drum cover of this song? I guess 'cause I'm not Navene!

  • @RedCl0ud22 'Cause the quality is no where near as good as this one. Also.

  • is that the soundcaster custom china?

  • Ever thought of buying a rack? Much more satisfying than a bunch of L-arms for cymbals man.

  • TASTY SNARE!!

  • Navene is so pro his mom doesn't bother him in his room when he plays with his "tubby friend and the brown boy"- to quote her on something she said.

  • @ 2:22 mm those flams 8===D~~~~

  • One of the best drum performances I've ever seen. Absolutely fucking excellent.

  • How come he doesn't do the accented hi-hat beats at 2:51?

  • small kits rock

  • That snare sounds orgasmic!!

  • Dude that was amazing you're almost as good as Na... Oh wait. :)

  • rockin that Drum Workshop kit man.

  • Nice playing btw :D

  • That badass look at 1:07

  • I love the tablaa in the background haha

  • would learn this but i dont wanna learn the polyrhymths by ear, any sheet music?

  • @ImaFez tap your foot theres always a constant pulse, most of it is in 4/4, listening will get ur ear trained better to hear it and therefore play it, it will feel more akwarward trying to read sheet music, once u get basic pattern look at sheet to make sure its right, check out my page....

  • @dazeinband i think it depends on perosnal preference. i find reading sheet music a lot easier then learning by ear, and ur are mistakenly claiming this song is in 4/4 where in facts interchanges between 10/8, 11/8, 12/8, 16/8 and i think either 21 or 22/8

  • @ImaFez Dude I'm pretty sure up until the 2 minute mark, it's all in 4/4. Count the entire drum part in 4 and it will all make sense. Then after that count it all in 5/4 and it will all make sense.

  • @dazeinband

Most of it isn't in 4/4 at all.

  • @ImaFez alex rudinger uploaded a great cover+transcript of this song ;) just search for "alex rudinger tempting time"

  • wow man you are really good

  • I loving watching you just mean mug the shit out of your wall when you're playing. It's hilarious.

  • props for background tablas!

  • What kinda snare do you use?

  • 3:16

my brain cannot work that hard i probably would have gotten a stroke :(

  • AWE!!!AWE!!!AWE!!!SOME!!!!

    great changes!

  • temazoooo waxiooOOOOO

  • brilliant! seeing this live was even better! can't wait to see you again with meshuggah in april!

  • I'm addicted to the china...

  • Even though I'm gonna get bitched at for saying this, at the time of the video, Navene was either not the drummer, or had not been the drummer for very long - also, Misha programmed the drums that are heard on the album if I'm not mistaken, so its kinda like a cover and people playing programmed drums are liable to make mistakes; however, I think Navene is sick and I couldn't notice any mistakes =D No insults meant here, just putting it into perspective the time period for those who don't know

  • @j7j2mackey92 Youre right, he didnt drum on their first album, that was all programmed, he covered this and added his own style to it. He did drum on their second album though :)

  • @j7j2mackey92 Also, he sent this video in to Tosin as his audition. I read it in Modern Drummer. There's a whole article on Navene in the January 2012 edition.

  • badass!

  • THIS IS SHIT COMPARED TO TROYWRIGHT'S COVER. Not saying this is bad

  • @Toadrew this is animals' drummer.

  • @Ileikdrumzz yeah and?

  • @Toadrew is gud?

  • @Toadrew well this is not a cover my friend, just a guy relaxing at home. Playing his band songs.

  • Navene Seems like the kind of guy to do stuff like this, then when complimented on it he says "No at like 4:16 I got the beat wrong, I suck."

  • Drum face XD

  • i just dont get how you can create music like this, seems impossible to me.

  • he must like Meshuggah with a sense of rhythm like that

  • @gonzomaniac71 Does sound rather "Haake" influenced

  • i love the sound of that snare

  • just saw you 2 days ago!!! fricken awesome man! :D

  • that snare sounds soooooooo good

  • @mattlikesdrumming Seconded. Fucking awesome tuning.

  • @Baekmagoji It has alot more to do with the depth than you might think.

  • bellla ...dio stronzo

  • awesome man!!!. AAL!!!!!!

  • Li mortacci tua!

    (awesome work, in italian)

  • What the heck? 4:05

  • TABLA!

  • troy wright actually plays this song better than AAL's drummer

  • @george5030 nope.

  • Hahaha holy shit.

  • just love that style man, so good. so groovy

  • which type of meinl cymbals are you using?

  • arnt you the actual drummer for animals as leaders? :D

  • @protestanimalsaslead Yes. He is.

  • @protestanimalsaslead yeah he is but he didn't write the drum parts for the first album, they were programmed by misha from periphery

  • @protestanimalsaslead He is, but all the drums on the first album were programmed and most of them programmed on weighless

  • @GeneralMillss whyyyy??!?!??

  • @breakinknucklesruler Good question. It's probably cheaper, and to be honest I had no idea until I read an article about Navene in Modern Drummer. This video is pretty much how he landed the gig playing with AAL.

  • @GeneralMillss except for the fact that they are not mostly programmed on weightless.

  • @mateo767 In his interview with Modern Drummer, Navene said that about 60% of the drums on Weightless were programmed, and about 40% were done with the same samples triggered with an e-kit.

  • @protestanimalsaslead Your name is like a combo of my two favorite bands :D :D :D

  • @MetalKillHiphop mine too.... thats why i made it haha

  • @protestanimalsaslead lol i first thaugt thats a joke to express your amazement :DD

  • Dude, you killed it! Good work man, from a fellow drummer.

  • This is so much better, so much more tasteful than how you play it now, Navene. Today you butcher the groove with death metal fills all over the place.

  • @amjan you mean he spices it up so he actually has fun when playing shows and not just being a computer who replays it exactly. come on man have you ever played drums at a live show?

  • pffff racket? hardly.

  • Nice man!...

  • ANIMOSITY

  • Just knew that Navene played all the instruments in his other band called Fleshwrought. Mind = Blown.

  • @nkoperweis I'm seeing you guys at the fillmore on the 27th, getting V.I.P tickets, can't wait to meet you!

  • Awesome job man!

  • So tired with the infatuation of Periphery and Misha. If he did in fact program the drums (which I seriously doubt), it's absolutely NOTHING in comparison to sitting here actually playing it. Go listen to Periphery/Messugah you fucking fags.

  • @IntoTheEternity Misha did in FACT program the drums. calm down bud.

  • @IntoTheEternity Why the hate? Just letting people know. I think Navene is amazing though. And AAL is friends with Periphery and are influenced by many people. So relax o.o

And Misha can play drums /watch?v=JJ4qg552_b8

    Have a good day :)

  • @IntoTheEternity meshuggah is great, but i don't see why you are rage moding.

  • @IntoTheEternity He actually did program the drum parts for AAL's debut.

  • look how painful it is to play with tosin...

  • he get's the same self-satisfying smirk I do when hearing Tosin's guitar massage my ears @ minute 2:01...

  • For anyone to says this is lackluster, your an idiot. Ive seen him play this live and weather its executed perfectly or not, its fantastically creative drumming on a small set

  • What timing is this ive been trying to figure this out for like the last hour

  • @LeBronze7 By "timing" you mean time signature? It changes throughout the song. It starts off in 4/4 throughout the intro. But then somewhere before 2:00 it does a different patter: it's in groups of 3 measures of 4/4, 4/4, and 3/4. Starting at 2:00 in this video it changes to 5/4.

  • @RedCl0ud22 I think there's no improvisation in this...

  • @markksamsonov No, there's a ton of improvisation. He's just doing whatever he wants with the song. It's not how the actual drums in the song go. Usually the bass drum parts are kept similar, and the type of cymbal he hits, but the snare hits and the fills are much different than the original drum part for this song. His playing in this video gives it a "live" feel.

  • so creative, it's a pure pleasure. bonerific

  • the lyrics to this song are amazing!!

  • I can only see 1 mic.. whatelse is there?

  • holy shit! u are nice man!

  • Saw them live, and I have a better appreciation for him as a drummer. Keep drumming Navene.

  • It would be really helpful if you put up some more aal songs here Navene! :)

  • What is it for china ??

  • 5:17 O fuck!!

  • how do you mic your bass drum?!?!?!?!

  • Makes it look so easy, shit.

  • i just realized you're wearing the same exact thing that you're wearing in the cafo video

  • jadummer......Did your parents finally buy you a drumset???

  • Is this Navene ever going to get past the kid popcorn snare sound or not?

  • @jadrummer110 What's wrong with that?

  • His neighbors names are Jacob and Susanne

and his name is NAVENE KOPERWEIS

  • 0:22 He is hitting no cymbal!!! WHAT IS THIS WITCHCRAFT!?!?!

  • Try to relate everything that you play to 4/4 time.

Don't just try to play stuff. If you understand it, then playing it will become really easy.

  • Hey Navene. It's time for a real drumset kid. This shit you're playing in here is small and faggoty.. And ugly as fuck too. While we're at it. Let me show you how to sound good..

  • @jadrummer110 you do realize hes in the band right?

  • @TheCompulsionToKill yeah he's the drummer in that Navene band mess.. Will you tell him to get a real snare drum and bigger real drumset that isn't ugly? No one else will do it for me..

  • @jadrummer110 haha I'm sorry. At which part do you hear a fake snare drum? And no one else gives a fuck about what his drum-set looks like because he can play the shit out of it.

  • @Currylarson That toy snare sounds like Orville Redenbacher popping a small bag of popcorn. Fail. No thunder here. get bigger drums, bigger sticks bigger arms and more skilled player. Like me.

  • @jadrummer110 Sorry your view of playing drums is so extremely childish. Unfortunately you don't know that you don't need big sticks and big arms to use good technique and hit the drums hard. You don't know the physics of drum stick size either, an how bigger and longer sticks make you play slower--which means it would would be very inefficient for Navene to use big sticks for this fast-paced song. (Especially for those crazy ghost notes. Can you image doing that with sticks bigger than 5B's?)

  • @jadrummer110 The only thing that is clear to me is that you have a different preference for they way your drums sound. It is also clear to me that he needs not change anything about his drums due to the fact that he is in a successful band. Maybe you should consider smaller drums, smaller arms, and... less skill i guess, so that you may get discovered, and graduate from bragging about yourself on youtube. You seem like a fuckin douche bag though so that probably wont happen.....

  • @jadrummer110

This guy is awesome. You, in the other hand, are a twat.

  • @femminiello If you like popcorn popping energy only he's ok.. I'm way better.

  • @jadrummer110 Upload a video and we'll compare you and Navene to see who's better. I'm not saying I don't believe you but I want to see your drumming skills.

  • @gpost001 Navene actually isn't good enough for Tosin.

  • Holy shit your kit sounds amazing.

  • there are actually people who DON'T like this?!

i'm so confused. even if you don't like it, you should @ least be able to appreciate what he's doing.

i mean, animals as leaders blows my fucking mind...

  • I keep thinking those 4 cymbals over there are going to topple over at any second!

  • You have a tabla in the background! Awesome!!

  • Nice job man, with animals as leaders are the best! regards man! good vibes!

  • Expression @ 5:20, "yeah you can go ahead and sell your kit on ebay"

  • I love the ghosts notes man!!

  • 3:58 - 4:00 sick fill. Awesome face.

  • wow thanks.....I'm gonna go pout in front of my drum kit and play easy ass metallica songs....how many years will it it take? lol

  • I just want to add that I like the way Navene plays this song a lot cooler than how it was done by the guy who mixed it on the drum track for the album. The album version is bad ass too, but Mr Koperweis here adds some really cool elements to it. Like the ride deal during the guitar bridge and from about 31 seconds in to the vid he changes up the little breakdown just a little but it adds a lot to it. I didn't even notice until after I watched this vid a billion times then listened to the album.

  • @pearldrums92 You fuckin put him in his place man! i cant stand it when people even mention someone like Travis Barker in the same conversation as Navene, Matt, and Orbin. Periphery and AAL have, in my opinion, the best technical drummers in music today they are leagues ahead in terms of skill and technique. Barker can go fuck himself

  • @pearldrums92 Now why would you wish that on Travis Barker? He's a good drummer. I have respect for all drummers of all genres because each and everyone of them practiced till they had gotten good enough to be where they are now. They live and breath drumming everyday!

  • 3:00 - 3:30 is insane.

  • i have some tips for those wanting to learn odd meters. get a white board and make a series of lines, like a row of 9 lines if you want to play 9 beat time. all in one color, all same length. that's your ride. get a second color and replace a few of the lines with that color for accents (crashes), and begin adding some shorter ones in between that might represent a snare, for example. try as many combinations in that time sig as you can find...

  • i feel sorry for the drum kit!

  • @smilyb0y94 Feel sorry for Travis Barker's drum kits

  • @thisguyisaninja travis barker is an average punk drummer with famous man capabilities because he is sold out and his mainstream punk music appeals to a mindless following who hears high bpm and they think the music is good. don't ever even think of comparing a navene koperweis, or travis orbin, or a matt hallpern to travis fucking barker, he should have died in that plane crash, gtfo off of this video. gg no re

  • @pearldrums92 Okay

  • @pearldrums92 I think you should study his playing more...he takes boring punk songs and gets very creative with them.

  • Question to Navene, what recommendations do you have to learning odd tim signatures, any good books out there that might be helpful?

  • Comment removed

  • @rollinfever15 think in faster time, then cut those time signatures further down, fractions man.

  • Comment removed

  • @rollinfever15

You should try Gary Chester's New Breed and Rhythmic Horizons by Gavin Harrison. Very helpful exercises and great books to just switch up with.

  • @rollinfever15 best way to learn odd time; listen to lots of odd time music, it begins to sound natural after a while. Unfortunately this song is more than just odd time it's, odd time with tons of polyrhythms and random awkward (in the best way) changes. Songs like these are usually programmed first and then the drummer just learns the part by ear over time.

  • @rollinfever15 theres a book by marco minneman... i forget what its called but i've heard its EXCELLENT for odd times.

  • @rollinfever15 im no Navene but what i found helpful is just singing the groove and feeling it at first rather than counting it, when i counted it it sounded like a random mess but when i sing the grooves a feel them as i play it helps me relate it to 4/4 a lot easier and helps with figuring them out

  • @rollinfever15 Don't get me wrong Navene is an AWESOME and I mean AWESOME drummer :)

but Misha Mansoor actually programmed the drums for AAL on both self-titled and "Weightless"

The way that I come up with odd time signatures is really just from the heart. Listen to lots of music that will throw you off like AAL, VoM, ATB, Messhugah etc. that'll help :)

  • @adrianxinx210 misha didn't programmed the drums in weightless, only electronic drum parts. the other parts where recorded directly by Navene, watch the recording session video

  • @adrianxinx210 Ok, I don't know where you got your info, but Misha did not program the drum parts on Weightless.

  • @inimicalODDITY But my grandma told me that Misha did :p

Yeah, I know he didn't do Weightless. Weightless is, essentially: Their First album as a band.

  • Just looking at the snare, I think it's a 14x4 10 ply dw collectors series. It looks identical to mine minus the black hardware.

  • what kind of snare / toms are those?

  • @MegaHusk

Jesus, what I'd do for that fucking snare.

  • Tell him to take lessons and get stronger arms and bigger sticks. Oh yeah. get a real drum set too.

  • I was always caught up in listening to Tosin, wasn't until I saw this video that I realized the insane amount of time put into the drums tracks for the album... Truly amazing.
