@bettaman94 I watched the doc last night (HBO has a new streaming service) and saw no evidence that the kids were being coached. The way it's edited for the trailer makes it seem that way. She actually sort-of rambles, in a very childlike way about how it's like living in Hell (the place) where The Devil is making bad things happen or something like that.
I live in Orange County. I drove 10 minutes down the fwy. Down a few streets and there was the school. I walked in, observed, asked a few questions and walked out. Sat in my car and cried in the parking lot. Yes I agree some of the descions that some parents make are dumb & stupid. BUT some are FOR real. One guy owned a construction co. Lost everything, now they live out of thier 2008 GMC suberbain. But no matter what, or WHO put them there. I feel for the kids.
And yes, it is, in most cases, the parents' fault but the kids should not be the ones to suffer. They didn't choose to be born into this world and they end up criminals because they are forced to provide for themselves at such a young age, they can't legally work so they steal and get caught up in dealing drugs to insure a meal in their stomaches which will land them in jail eventually... And sure, they are guaranteed a meal at school if they are in grades k-8 but they need to eat something wh
This is what people in America need to see. Thank you for doing this. All of America needs to open their eyes and see that a large portion of kids and their families are in a very bad spot right here in America. Some of these kids didn't even know the meaning of the word "home"! Bottom line is they are starving, neglected and unsure of whether they'll see tomorrow-and they may not necessarily want to since they feel they have absolutely nothing to look forward to. Orange County isn't the only p
It's the poor decisions of the parents that either got them into this situation, or keeps them from getting out of it. It's hard to feel sympathy for the mother of four living in a one bedroom motel room, when she also decides to take care of FOUR dogs. Let's spend any extra money we have feeding four dogs rather than use that money to save for the first and last months rent on an apartment. It's dumb shit like that that keeps poor people poor. I feel for the kids- it's borderline abusive.
Im watching this right now its so sad/ The news reporter keeps asking them questions they dont wanna answer then way they answer shes like WHY? i kinda wanna kill her for giving the kids a hard time D:
There was a mom in this documentary that had 4 kids, 4 dogs (that she called "my kids"), she was fat and from the looks of her motel room clearly wasted money on the non-essentials. She even said her kids had multiple fathers. Yeah, let's blame everyone else for her bad decisions.
What's so different between these kids and the ones in Africa? They're closer, so I'm supposed to feel what? If you don't have parents and live in a motel than get yourself into foster care.
its really sad when a child says they hope for a house. or a boy younger than 11 says he wants to redo his life.lastly when a girl no older than 8 says the envirement she lives in is hell.people shouldnt judge these people who live here because it could easily be me or them
and when you see a young child say god only gives you what you need it really makes you think did i think about that when i was a kid or did i take the things i did have for granted and ask for more stuff these kids are forced to be grateful for what they have and we take what we have for granted shame on us
also, be careful about judging these kids' parents. a lot of these families are normal families that were guilty of nothing except simply being poor, but working class and doing ok enough to not be homeless, but then the economy took a downturn and they lost their jobs and subsequently became homeless. some of you are acting like they're these immoral, boozey drug addicted whores, and they simply are not.
@friendlycakeasaurus It's a series of poor decisions that led these people to where they are. How many of the parents completed college? How many of these mothers had kids when they weren't financially stable? Their kids are being fed at school- these parents aren't even able to feed their own children. How is that NOT the parent's fault? How many of these children will end up with drug addictions, criminal records, or kids born that they themselves can't take care of? I'd guess 9 out of 10.
@triton2toro How do you know that something tragic didn't happen to their family to put them in that situation? Maybe your right, maybe your not. I cant stand when people are judgemental whe in fact everyone on this planet should only self reflect and do good. Of all the comments one could leave...and this is what you chose. I for one would opt to inspire hope and selflessness to those less fortunate. So they may have made a bad desicion, im sure you have once or twice in your life.

@Cee2theEtte I was "lucky"? I was "lucky" because I didn't get involved in drugs and alcohol during high school? I was "lucky" because I chose to study and go on to college? I was "lucky" because I didn't have a kid when I wasn't financially able? I was "lucky" because I worked and went to college, and paid off my student loans by myself? I can't stand people blaming everyone but themselves for their bad choices in life. Take responsibility and make your own "luck".
@triton2toro Oh, fuck off, you toolbag. Some people's lives start off with so much shit against them from the start that they spend their lives digging their way out. The fact that college was even an option for you speaks volumes about the background you're likely from. Go experience some real hardship in your life and grow some fucking empathy, you piece of over-privileged shit.
@ryuuseicha I made a few youtube comments and now you decide you know my whole life?Alright, let's make assumptions then. Why don't you go smoke some more crack, have more kids out of wedlock when you can't afford to, then get on public assistance, and then blame everyone but yourself for your failures in life Don't take responsibility for the spiral of poverty you've created for yourself.Sure, I could start cursing, but having a college education, and therefore have a larger vocab to draw from.
@ryuuseicha By the way, have you even SEEN this show? If so, please defend the mother who has FOUR dogs living with her and her three kids in a motel room. What part of that mother's tragic upbringing forced her to feed FOUR dogs rather than save that money to get an apartment? You give me just ONE reasonable explanation for that, and I'll apologize and take back EVERYTHING I've said. Since you seem to know everything, explain that one for me. If you can't do that, this conversation is over.
@triton2toro I *loathe* pets, but if you saw the doc, you'd see that it doesn't really matter that she has 4 dogs (they are all little ratty things, it's not like they eat 40-lb bags of chow.) Even if she got rid of the dogs, she wouldn't have enough money to rent an apartment. the dogs are the small comfort they have, is all.
@marikobrandon How much she spends on the dogs is really besides the point. This just gives you insight into her priorities. She sits there and complains about how little her paycheck is- well, if it's so little, shouldn't every penny count? Isn't owning a dog a luxury? And if she's stupidly spending her money caring for dogs she can't afford, where else is she wasting money? If she wants to live in a motel - fine- but when she drags her children down with her, that disgusts me.
the "money to make this film could have been used to help them" argument is a silly, old myth. the money used to make this film would feed, pay for gas, utilities and pay rent for their families for what, a few weeks? a month? a few months? then what? OR they could use it to make a film that exposes their plight to hundreds of thousands and nationally raise awareness
This is sad that kids live like this in America. Instead of the Govt really helping they spend money on wars and peeping their noses into other country's buisnesses. The govt got money for wars but can't feed the pour. They say their aint no hope for the youth and the truth is their ain't no hope for the future. And HBO with all of the money they have could of went to help these families not exploit them in a documentary to get more viewers than Showtime or Starz.
"it's about time someone shed some light on the issue."
how about shedding some light on these arrogant assholes that made this shitty documentary?! they ask demeaning questions and seemed to talk down to these people throughout the film. these people are poor... now move on to how you can make their situation better or leave them the fuck alone. the time, energy, and money that was wasted on exposing their lives could have been used to really help these people.
i felt such despair watching this on HBO this morning. every one of those kids touched my heart. i have to ask though- what was that one mom thinking having all those dogs?!!
@parafleet You can believe in God and still be critic about economy, capitalism and even religion. The problem sometimes with religion (any religion) is that it sells you the idea that you get what you deserve in life, that nothing can be done to change or improve; or that God loves and gives wealth and happiness to his good sons, ergo, if you don´t have any, you must be a bad person. Imagine that in a 5 year old mind. That`s the only religion related critic that I can see in this doc.
@rwrp This was a tragic show. I didn't think the poor kids should have been used to be some film maker's guinea pigs on blaming "God" for suffering on earth. I guess some ignorant bitch just wanted to start 'em off atheist early.
@rwrp What should she have asked a bunch of 6 and 7 year olds? "How do you think recent economic policies have affected the working poor? Should the current administration revamp social services to give more aid to those struck by the economic downturn? Do you think outsourcing of jobs to India and China played a role in your family's current fiscal difficulties?"
Wow, I feel so bad. I forget that their are people that are in dire straits. Barely eeking out the essentials, while I am stressing over luxuries. I know that I am blessed. I wish that all the struggling families are able to rise above and be able to afford the luxuries that I take for granted.
i know motels and im from california and even in the nicest areas the motels are all drug dealers and users and people partying, it sounds like im generalizing but i live in a motel city for that matter and anyone i have ever known that lived at the motel or rented a room for a night or a week was on drugs. maybe 10-20 % of families in motels are not on drugs but really most are. i got a homey that lives at motel 6 with his little son and he sells dope and weed
I don't buy the argument that a capitalistic system causes this. If you talk to someone who grew up in a communist or even a socialist system, it is very difficult to better yourself. In old world europe, you either had to be born into money or marry into it. And that is not really old world. I would say maybe before communism fell.
@elmwoodparkhood Wrong.
