This is one of my favorite films.Although flawed the acting more than compensates.Life is long and at times can seem pointless or even not worth living .In the film the Vampire talks about Count Dracula and the sadness of this creature setting out a meal for his guest that he himself hasn't been able to enjoy in over 40 decades. Can this shadow of a man even remember how to make a bed? This isn't a film to be frightened by.Rather it is a film to be haunted by.
I love this movie...I just can't believe that count Orlok and the green goblin of spiderman is played by the same man. William Defo is just so creepy in this and he did such a great job portraying Max Schrek...and not forgetting John Malkovich, well he is too amazing in all his roles especially this and Of mice and men
I love this movie...I just can't believe that count Orlok and the green goblin of spiderman is played by the same man. William Defo is just so creepy in this and he did such a great job portraying Max Schrek...and not forgetting John Malkovich, well he is too amazing in all his roles especially this and Of mice and men
At the end it is proven he is a vampire. That's what makes the movie so funny the entire cast, with the exception of Malkovich, doesn't know he is. Willem Dafoe rocked in this movie.
Defoe was brilliant, Eddie Izzard was brilliant, Udo Keir was brilliant as always, Catherine McCormack was great. Even Cary Elwes did a nice job with his small part. They all delivered a better performance than Malkovich in this, and in that I was a little disappointed. Something about Malkovich's delivery just seemed wrong. Terrific movie all the same. Maybe it's just because Malkovich has been one of my favorite actors for so long. I expect the man to walk on water, he he.
He is american, thus, speaking american. Its in english, the language he is speaking. But he is American. And thus, the hybrid 'speaking american' was born.
Seen many vampire movies, this is by far the best. Not sure it is horror. I will call it comedy. Background is vampire, but the movie is all about CONTROL and exerting POWER OVER. To fuck a powerful being as vampire and make him shut up and go back to the set. That is real power over. Do anybody else gets it? I love this movie!!!
I'm not on the Malkovich love train, I don't think he's as great as everyone else says - like Nicholson, he can't play anyone other than himself, or himself with a slight accent
Dafoe, however, was awesome in this movie - sympathetic, menacing and humorous at the same time
After seeing this movie, I can't really understand why John Malkovich is considered a great actor. He uses a German accent for 20% of the movie, a crappy English accent for 10%, and his usual American accent for the rest.
i loved this movie, i thought dafoe was good, but malcovich was better, and dafoes make-up could have been a bit better, it looked alot like him,(no pun intended) and this scene is my favorite, this and the scene were the director chokes him.
This is an amazing film. Perfect acting. Perfect writing. Perfect directing. " You will have no close-ups. NONE." lol Can someone explain to me why the director of this movie has not directed anything else?
Both of these actors are incredible. Defoe does an amazing job of painting the vampire as a non-human. And that director is as morallly bankrupt as the vampire, he just doesn't show it. I need to rent this.
oh john, john, john... from sleazy lee in 'true west' to the ribboned and refined valmont; to the sudious and sexually confused freiderich murnau... all exquisite parts. thank you. i wish with all my heart that someone would post the whole thing. the movie is criminally underrated and neglected.
so does john malkovich's character know that hes a vampire and he wont tell anyone or does he think hes just really into his character? haha i cant remember i havent watched the movie in a while
LOL sounds just like film school graduate, the biggest threat he can make, "You will have NO close-ups, none!" That's his biggest punishement. NO CLOSE-UPS!
This is Hillarious! Think about it: a director has a drug-addicted nutcase sheltered actor who is ruining his production. Imagine if that actor was a freakin' vampire. It's not that far off from the real deal. ;-)

Damn... John Malkovich acts the same way in every movie, leaving it up to the other actors to make up the rest of the movie. I can't stand him. His accents suck; he just won't let go of his American accent!
when you think about it...when he said he didn't want the ship seen it kinda made sense...since "vampires" don't go over water unless it's high or low tide....
This is a college production? Not bad if it is.

great movie but they got it backwards. Malkovich should've been the vampire. He can reach levels of creepy that are beyond Dafoe, IMO.

From Tennyson's "Tithonus":
"But thy strong Hours indignant work'd their wills,
And beat me down and marr'd and wasted me,
And tho' they could not end me, left me maim'd
To dwell in presence of immortal youth,
Immortal age beside immortal youth,
And all I was in ashes."
Beautiful.
