I was there from 1986 to 2001, when my life took many a drastic change. These men gave me JOY, year in, and year out. I love them SO much, as an avid fan can from afar. The pictures I was blessed to get, still appear on my "the days that were" shelf. I wish them ALL well. It appears John is "off the grid" for now. Wherever you are John...as well as Sam...my heart STILL belongs to both you! Bless you both and, PLEASE, be well! <3
@laylahh1951 John is on tour with The Doobie Brothers! Sounding great-he was with them for a while in the late 80's, now he is their permanent bass player. Pat Flynn has been touring with Michael Martin Murphey.
Saw Sam in TUpelo for FREE last thurs! Still great but not as hyper and boistrous as I remember in the past, I think that made 6 times that I'd seen him, maybe he was sick...hope not . Saw NGR in 79,84,Bela '93,Sam 09 and 10 and '11. And JOhn COwaN band in '08 and '10. What went with Pat Flynn? They are awesome !!!!!!!!!!!!!
The song name is "Deeper and Deeper,". It's on their 1981 album, "Commonwealth." It's a GREAT album, every cut is fantastic. They have two live albums out, one from Telluride 1977. Sam Bush and John Cowan still have vibrant solo careers, you can find 'em places. To hear John sing, live, is awe-inspiring.
If you know these guys, tell them we in south Mississippi are starving - STARVING - for a good concert. We don't have any good venues, but we've got fields a' plenty.
@ekpil The lyrics don't seem corny too me. But yeah the high points of this song is what you mentioned. Esp. the solos, I love a band that can improvise, esp. when its New Grass. I really wish the solos would have been longer.
@CadillacL I wwas wondering the same thing. Odd to see any New Grass song with no great solo from Pat. Sam and Bela are fantastic, but I miss Pat Flynn!
@7211098 I've seen monster talents in situations like that. They're usually bummed that almost no one showed up, but they seem to play far better for a few people than they could under just about any other circumstance.
I was lucky enough to be there for this performance, they were absolutely great. Even if you have to sell your soul, get to the Telluride Music Festival on the summer solstice! Heavan on Earth.
I'm still gratefull the powers to be are leaving this tune on Y-Tube!!! I would have loved to have been there!!!! This is American folk music at it's best!!!!
@glennorange. I picked them up a while ago by ear, and they all seem to be variations of the F Chord. First is F with the 3rd string up a half step, then the F chord, and then F with an open third string. Wash, rinse, repeat. I expect my check within two weeks.
Whats amazing to me is that its been years since Fleck, Bush, and Cowan toured full time in the New Grass Revival together but yet somehow they still sound tighter together now than they ever did before! Fantastic!
We have the Tell. BG. video for that year and this song is our favorite. We go to Colorado every year. We can't wait to go to Telluride for a BG Fest. soon. We love this. Thank you for "Music".
You should hear the guy who wrote this song perform it. Deeper and Deeper by Bob Lucas. The Revival did a lot of Bob Lucas' stuff. Sometimes it great to hear these renditions, but Lucas, man o man, what a singer and guitarist!!
The Telluride Festival is something that every music fan should experience at least once in their lives. These musicians share their talents with the crowd with great mutual respect, and the feeling in the crowd is magical. Seeing parents children, and senior citizens all enjoying the music is a wonderful experience. The mountain venue is perfect for this music! Planet Bluegrass has to be congratulated for their responsible stewardship of this magical event.
@MrMacWilkens The first fest I missed in 18 years. Unfortunately, have not been able to attend since 2002, though EVERY Father's Day week-end, my heart flies to that canyon in God/dess's Country.
If things couldn't get any worse, I had brought a blind date that resembled Courtney Love. She told John what a great mandolin player I am and how he should hire me for his band and how much it would improve his sound.
I was lucky enough to see John's band w/ Scott Vestal when they came to the Sound Factory in WV. There were only twenty people there. The club had a rude soundman (Mr. Feedback) that was intent on making them sound as bad as possible. Can you believe it? None of the guys were in a good mood. They still put on a great show.
The best country band. Fantastic musicians.
