  • very helpful, thanks. One question, what's the relationship between the sidechain group volume and the volume of the instrument you're sidechaining? should they be set at the same level on the mixer?

  • I was about to say a group is not required, but you noticed the sidechain at the bottom there. All someone needs is to put a compressor where they want, enable the side chain button, like you did in this video, then it will appear in the sends. A group is needed though if you want to eq and chain other fx's along with the compressor. There is side chain on other FX's too, using side chain on Gate is useful to turn on and off sound using another sound source as the trigger.

  • Short and simple instructions!

    worked perfectly for me :)

    thanks man!

  • thx bro nice tutorial! so basically any compressor will do im using diamond wave bundle Waves C1 Comp. you gotta mess a bit with the setting but once you got it you can save your settings for future tracks and do minor adjustments. thanks

  • Thanks. It's been very helpful.

  • Thanks!

  • Hi i have a noob question. I cannot see the stereo out on my VST instrument in the mixer, it just has IN- All midi inputs and OUT through 1 - prologue - Midi In. It's fine for all audio tracks just not VST. any suggestions?

  • top video thank you

  • What other instruments are using sidechain in your soundcloud demo???

  • OMFG! It's very good!

  • Thanks

  • dam this is very easy!thanks a lot!:)

  • Thanks. Simple but that helped me.

  • GREAT TUTORIAL MAN

  • better chose Side-chains - sidechain: Ins 1. When choosing the Groups, the kick is to loud

  • Great, thanks for upload mate!!!

  • big thanks for this tutorial bro !!

  • thanks

  • I have a question: What is the best\most optimal configuration for the compressor? (Threshold, Ratio, Make-Up, Attack, Hold, Release, Analysis).

I ask this since I've played a lot with it but never got a configuration where the side-chain is obvious (like in the tutorial) but yet doesn't exceeds volume (in an exaggerated way) when kick stops playing! P.S - Thank you for the tutorial. VERY helpful! :)

  • @amirgelman Just turn auto gain off. then it wont jump up in vol ;o)

  • @specialistsound

excellent! thank you so much for your help... and thanks for the tutorial!

  • @specialistsound Hi how do get the side chain effect on a crash downfilter at the breakdown for example with out the kick playin ?

  • by the way, the song you wrote is absolutely beautiful! You should title it "The Angels Dance" or something like that. Thanks for the great instruction, sidechaining vocals to backing music works great for music on hold productions, i just slowed down the attack and release and this worked perfect! Thanks again!

  • Thanks!

  • nice track and tutorial

  • nice track and tuturial

  • why u have kick on stereo ?

  • @YouPresenter its a mono sample. good spot tho :o)

  • That rhythm that you are using for the example is hot, love the strings!

  • chewtorial

  • Helped a lot, thanks.

  • why you dont have backround noise

  • Great tutorial...so simple.Tnx

  • amazing track at the start

  • Lovely stuff man, I'm just new to House and Trance, I've always been making Jungle and DnB

  • Nice tutorial, has made my weekend a whole lot more productive. :-)

  • Another option is a new plug-in that just came out called LFO Tool. You slap it on a track and now you have LFO's for Filter, Resonance, Volume and Pan. LFO shape is totally customizable with smoothing and swing. Really killer and has preset patterns to simulate Side-Chain Pumping :D

Good videos - I'll send you a friend invite. I have tutorials on my page so it's good to find someone else doing videos that are helpful here.....

  • This is the easiest way I've seen. There are other ways but they kind of confuse me. I like the group track method.

  • officially im your fan! keep up big works as this :),

  • Fixed it (no idea how!) Now i have a new question - what If i want to just do the sidechaining on a part of the track not the whole thing?

  • @lukebolger101

only apply the trigger where you want it to be in the track.

  • When I click send to side chain it only shows send to side chain group it doesn't show the compressor like it did in your video :(

  • @lukebolger101

u probably didn't activate the sidechain trigger on the compressor, it does not show as a send out when it's not triggered...i know u just fixed it, but though it would help to know what happend ;)

  • Comment removed

  • @lukebolger101 activate side-chain @ the Steinberg Compressor plugin...

  • @lukebolger101 Make sure in the actual compressor, the sidechain button is activated, I had the same problem

  • Hello !

Can u say me.. what a problem with my Cubase or with me ! :)

When I create a group track after that in mixer in Stereo Out on SideChain Bass i cant choose the Group-Side whats wrong ? i made all like on your Tutorial... but...Thx

  • great tutorial, simple effective and easy, this is great trick i plan to incorparate into my tunes. (trying it out on my kick drum as we speak:)

  • Thank you so much for this tutorial it was straight to the point and extremely in depth. It has really given life to my composition =D

  • Ty so much for a very understandable tutorial :) , now im off to get famous! see you!! hehe, i still need to understand send and return better, but im getting there :D , have a nice day . Cheers!

  • Thanks so much for that. Wanted to know how to do it for a long time. I have a question. What if you are using Battery for your drums, can i send the kick only out to a side chain or does the kick have to be on an audio track?

  • This is so amazingly simple! Excellent explanation, excellent tutorial!

  • great!

  • This video is fantastic! Learned how to sidechain in Cubase 5! Thanks!

  • When I add a group channel, it doesn't say "OK" or "CANCEL" please help!

  • good tutorial! easy and straight out! got it now, thanks!

  • hi maybe u can help me!

how to Record more than one track with the same VSt instrument (hypersonic)

i mean create 4 seperated tracks for seperated instrument,

all playing in individual part with a single vsti! Or can somebody show me a tutorial for this subject? thank u!

  • thanks mate, very goot tutorial

  • quality tutorial

    thanks

  • Many thanx!! btw awesome chill-trance!

  • Sorry Sir I'm having a few difficulties with this.. I've followed everything step by step. I can only pt it down to the fact I am using a stand alone VST.. Massive by NI. Will this have any effect on the workings? I am also using an audio loop of a kick. I can't see why this would affect its working though?

  • Thanks for this tutorial. I've never tried sidechaining on cubase. And good track of yours btw!

  • cool thanks for the video helped. :)

  • hey man good lesson :-)

  • side TRAINING? Word selection fail

  • is there any way of making one effect such as reverb effect many different tracks with out having to put them in a group or assigning the same paramaters to each track?

  • Thank you so much!

  • where can i hear this finished track?

  • thank u so much! really wanted to know how to do it! now i do! :D

  • excellent tutorial, quick and efficient, helped me out big time. Nice one thanks!

  • Great tutorial. Thanks.

  • Is it possible to do this with a VSTI added as an instrument track? I just upgraded form Cubase 3 to Cubase 5 and I don't see audio outputs for the instrument track (just midi).

  • on cubase 5 ,just clik a button on your compressor (cubase dynamics) and you have your sidechain, your method is for sx3.

  • Thanks for the tip ! Great vid .,and aweseome sound and feeling on ur track !

  • Nice! So it does away with the Vst connections Thanks

  • can you use an effects channel instead of a group channel?

  • @kakejelly

yes but it'll act as a send, not an insert. Only handy if you wanted to say sidchain a reverb or something so that the trail ducks but not the original sound.

  • dood thank you very very very much!!!you've helped me a lot!!!nice tutorial!!!

  • hey, i gettin confused xD, how do you make the ´kick´ send to the sidechain, i only see that i can send it to the group sidechain :(

  • @apanson95 yeh me too, did u solve this?

  • @ravingdave900 ohh, one of my coment has taken away?, random, no i havent solved this, i only have essentials, so dont think the sidechain works, been cheking for plugins but didn´t work for me :/ mabye bcs of my operative system :(

  • @apanson95 i fixed it. i didn't click the "sidechain" logo on the compressor. i tried to use sonalksis compressor but it didn't have the icon so i was forced to use the cubase compressor.

  • @ravingdave900 u got the essentials 5?

  • @apanson95 errm i just got cubase 5. piratebay it if u hav to

  • @ravingdave900 ok, but heyy, u make much music?

  • @apanson95 yea a fair bit. been producing on/off since 07

  • @ravingdave900 nice, started mabye a year ago xD

  • Comment removed

  • another thing i have essentials 5, if that matters

  • great tut, exactly what i was looking for, with the EXACT same hardware.

  • Good job!

  • @Lemek25

Create another kick track that is assigned to no output. then call it sidechain trigger.

now send the sidechain trigger channel to the sidechain. voila ;o)

  • @specialistsound Another elegant solution to Lemek's question would be to set the quick send to "pre fader". This way, even if the kick level is altered by the fader in anyway (eg even if it's all the way down), the sidechain still receives the kick signal.

  • well i know, but like, i export each individual tramce as an entire song in waw, then i put all those in cubase (from FL studio) and , and i compare , the mastering plugins in FL to the ones in cubase , and it seems that the ones in cubase are having a lot better result. Just what i noticed, but still i cant draw notes in cubase , it is too complicated compared to the piano roll in fl studio. Iam just asking beacuse i was curious. And are there any professional mastering vids free, online???

  • very nice tutorial , thanks a lot

    oh yes, on question:

Is audio quality in cubase 4-5 better than in fl studio 9?

  • Audio quality can't stray too far away from DAW to DAW, just saying.

  • @TheDJSTALKER

No, doubt it. There's very little difference between them all that I'm aware of. But I do run all my sound card outs into the TL Valve Fat Track which give it some flavour.

  • Comment removed

  • @specialistsound so its all about soundcard and computer, not the program? cuz its impossible to make the songs sound mastered in FL... everything sounds flat and boring. tried everything with compressor, maximizers, reverb, delay, soundgoodizer, EQs, etc. still sound like crap...

  • @TheDJSTALKER i used fl studio for ages but im now changing to cubase 5. cubase sounds more transparent or call it airy in the high frequencies. nonetheless, you can produce on a high level with fl studio and the sidechain abilities of fl's peak controller are lightyears ahead.
