words such as arrogant and patronising spring to mind. not James Morrison's most dignified moment. but perhaps he was playing on the fact that John Martyn shared the same initials...as for mentioning that Martyn had a drink problems.. perhaps James had had one or two that night too.
He's from Scotland...Bonnie Scotland (adopts awful Austin Powers Scottish accent)..but then few seconds later... he's an English guy ??? No he's not !!
Nope, cannot stand his music and his American voice - I am open to all music, I am eclectic as they come, but I appreciate talent - Tina Dico, Sia, Buckley, Eva Cassidy, Elbow...the list goes on to classical, 80's, blues, soul and jazz. I think there are those that have it, and those that just go with the flow - Morrison is not talented, his voice is shocking live and his music is middle of the road forget me next day make a quick buck now. Atleast Jedward know their place.
You know what, this is a good version of a great song. If you don't like it then fine. It's not John Martyn, but its someone who can appreciate a great tune and a great song writer exposing a new generation to the man.
Absolutely fucking dire - as usual no soul, no voice, middle of the road bullshit. James Morrison, you need to just fuck off. Anyone that knows anything about music just knows - just knows!
song sounds ok i guess.. but i mean... its never gonna do it full justice... i mean its JOHN MARTYN ffs... he was a genius in his own right! RIP john <3
Muffled and distorted .Sadly the sensitivity of the song gets mashed in the mix.Too much mains hum coming through.Check out the John Martyn & Kathy Mattea version.
yes it's not as good as the original but who cares, and I say this as a MASSIVE John Martyn fan The boy did a tribute to the late great John Martyn and even if 1 person who was at this gig or watches this video then goes on to get into John's music then it's a good thing. As John said, some people are crazy ;)
I like james morrison before i heard this version of john martyn and i now like this guy even more. He has done big john proud with this song and i hope more younger people take some time and listen to the great man.
Wee bit rough around the edges, but a nice gesture...yet a TERRIBLE approach. I'm sure James knew it was as he was saying it. To those dishing out the coarse language, do remember that we ALL make mistakes.
Check out the John Martyn clip of this song from OGWT (old grey whistle test) and you will see what he is talking about and understand. BTW: think this is a nice tribute to JM and good way of spreading the word and the love of his music.
@c3pbo why do you say that? James Morrison is probably one of the nicest, humblest guys ever... and this video should prove it. He was a little starstruck himself and as such, his words didn't come out quite right. He was not trying to be disrespectful, in fact, quite the opposite.
I dont mind James and II know he loves John Martyn but how dare he play him off to his fair weather crowd as a passing thought they will never fully understand and leave them with the idea that he was a heavy drinker! what a cunt! great version thou! shit crowd! RIP John u big crack hound!
I dont mind James and II know he loves John Martyn but how dare he play him off to his fair weather crowd as a passing thought they will never fully understand and leave them with the idea that he was a heavy drinker! what a cunt! great version thou! shit crowd! RIP John u big crack hound!

A lot better than the appalling Eric Clapton cover of this song...at least a bit of passion in this...this song is all about feeling. The performance is a lot better than the intro tho! (Scottish/English - there is a difference James!!!)
yeah that is very wrong!!! but james is a good old genuine guy! he really is!.....i really like his stuff and he done john justice on this cover. However you are right on ur comment.....rip john u emotional volcano you!!
disrespectful to Mr. Martyn - Crowd laughing that he laughed and James just brushing it over - His guitar playing will never match that of Martyns. - May you never James!
what do you want them all to do break down and cry.....yeah cos john would want that wouldnt he....hed rather a load of people get rat arsed and play his music...im sure of that!! this performance showed ZERO disrespect to john ....please!! only disrespect was you to james who is a great lad who is just covering a legends song.....
@worddeep3 Right... I agree with you, however, I think John Martyn died 5 days before this taping... He didn't really have time to get his facts straight because I dunno, he's playing shows not doing some Googling, and I think people need to get over that.
I don't see what's so wrong with him covering it. And people calling the audience for not knowing John Martyn - there's a difference between not knowing and disliking. It is likely that a bunch of his fans went home that night and discovered some more John Martyn. Whatever you think of the cover, that is a great thing
Total lack of respect towards the Maestro Mr Morrison. Shame on you. If u ever manage to achieve anywhere close to the passion, honesty & writing ability of the great JM, you'll be doing well. Johnny come lately skimmimg the surface, need to be more authentic if you want real respect. Audience clearly philistines by their reaction proving they've never heard of JM. Top marks for trying to educate them, but not in such a flippant & disrespectful way. Sorry you'll never hold a candle to the Man.
god bless James Morrison for doing this cover and tribute to one of Britain's finest singer/songwriters , I noticed how the audience really enjoyed it . My estimation of James has just risen by 100% great version as well!!!
so saffsgrandad he is not fit to lace johns shoe's or drinks(whateva that means) but good on him for paying tribute to john martyn, id say james morrison is so glad you kinda approve.
deborahthezebra. Sorry darling, song was written by John, not Eric. Mr James Morrison, I think dcurrn was fair. When I found out John was dead I made some hasty comments about tributes too. I think you actually did a good effort (no easy to do of a man with such standing in the music industry). Think you should be a bit more careful on what you say on stage though. If I had been in the croud during your introduction I would probably have tried to jump on the stage and kill you. Be cool bud.
Show some respect? James Morrison shouldve shown some respect to John Martyn by firstly getting it right that he had scottish parents and considered himself scottish despite being born in england, and secondly by not even attempting to come close to a decent cover of "may you never" He doesnt deserve the priviledge.
Hey guys. According to his website, John was born in surrey but grew up in Glasgow. He also spent his latter years (with his second {i think!} wife) in Kilkenny, Ireland and Scotland. From what I can tell from his live perfomances (the talking parts!) he retained his English accent.
Anyway, who gives a shit where he was born? The guys is a legend and his passing is a loss to music! RIP
And btw, steviethejudge, he does mention that Martyn is from Scotland. So he was an English guy, from Scotland. Or a Scottish guy, from England. Either way, it is not an insult.
"Martyn was born in New Malden, Surrey, England... and he spent his childhood alternating between England and Scotland."
I dont mind James and II know he loves John Martyn but how dare he play him off to his fair weather crowd as a passing thought they will never fully understand and leave them with the idea that he was a heavy drinker! what a cunt! great version thou! shit crowd! RIP John u big crack hound!

I supposed James doesn't have any "respest" for John, but it is obvious that John is a huge inspiration to James. This was the first time I heard this song, but as he was singing, I felt he was truly singing about John. I'm saddened that you & the two others feel this way, but you are entitled to your opinions.

People of the calibre of Mr Morrison should stick to the kind of stuff he's used to churning out. But then its always a choice between authentic talent or something resembling talent.
