  • words such as arrogant and patronising spring to mind. not James Morrison's most dignified moment. but perhaps he was playing on the fact that John Martyn shared the same initials...as for mentioning that Martyn had a drink problems.. perhaps James had had one or two that night too.

  • Fucking murder who is this dick

  • fair play to him for the respect he showed to jm by playing that song

  • What a twat. Shit cover. A disgrace to John Martyn's name.

  • He's from Scotland...Bonnie Scotland (adopts awful Austin Powers Scottish accent)..but then few seconds later... he's an English guy ??? No he's not !!

Then he lived his life ??

    Get fucked Morrison.

  • He comes over as a total twat, but it's a nice tribute to John, who was everything Mr Morrison will never be.

  • Nope, cannot stand his music and his American voice - I am open to all music, I am eclectic as they come, but I appreciate talent - Tina Dico, Sia, Buckley, Eva Cassidy, Elbow...the list goes on to classical, 80's, blues, soul and jazz. I think there are those that have it, and those that just go with the flow - Morrison is not talented, his voice is shocking live and his music is middle of the road forget me next day make a quick buck now. Atleast Jedward know their place.

  • You know what, this is a good version of a great song. If you don't like it then fine. It's not John Martyn, but its someone who can appreciate a great tune and a great song writer exposing a new generation to the man.

  • Absolutely fucking dire - as usual no soul, no voice, middle of the road bullshit. James Morrison, you need to just fuck off. Anyone that knows anything about music just knows - just knows!

  • worst cover ive heard try a little respect next time !!!!!

  • song sounds ok i guess.. but i mean... its never gonna do it full justice... i mean its JOHN MARTYN ffs... he was a genius in his own right! RIP john <3

  • James seems so lovely in all his interviews so I don't see why youre all hating him? Also, I don't see what he did wrong..?

  • fucking TWAT PRICK

  • scottish RIP Jonh Martyn may ure songs never be forgottenxx

  • Muffled and distorted .Sadly the sensitivity of the song gets mashed in the mix.Too much mains hum coming through.Check out the John Martyn & Kathy Mattea version.

  • yes it's not as good as the original but who cares, and I say this as a MASSIVE John Martyn fan The boy did a tribute to the late great John Martyn and even if 1 person who was at this gig or watches this video then goes on to get into John's music then it's a good thing. As John said, some people are crazy ;)

  • A voice as weak as cheap lager.John would turn in his bloody grave.!!

  • He doesn't have a voice...

  • most of the twats at this concert would never have heard of john martyn lets face it.

  • I like james morrison before i heard this version of john martyn and i now like this guy even more. He has done big john proud with this song and i hope more younger people take some time and listen to the great man.

  • Wee bit rough around the edges, but a nice gesture...yet a TERRIBLE approach. I'm sure James knew it was as he was saying it. To those dishing out the coarse language, do remember that we ALL make mistakes.

  • @johnrussellsounds get a life man

  • Check out the John Martyn clip of this song from OGWT (old grey whistle test) and you will see what he is talking about and understand. BTW: think this is a nice tribute to JM and good way of spreading the word and the love of his music.

  • What a dick James Morrison is, but nice cover I guess, if not completely like the original but just not as good

  • @c3pbo why do you say that? James Morrison is probably one of the nicest, humblest guys ever... and this video should prove it. He was a little starstruck himself and as such, his words didn't come out quite right. He was not trying to be disrespectful, in fact, quite the opposite.

  • @c3pbo Dick, Yes,, As good as J.M. ,, never..

  • Really good cover of JM's classic.....

  • good version of a good tune...cheers

  • I dont mind James and II know he loves John Martyn but how dare he play him off to his fair weather crowd as a passing thought they will never fully understand and leave them with the idea that he was a heavy drinker! what a cunt! great version thou! shit crowd! RIP John u big crack hound!

  • I dont mind James and II know he loves John Martyn but how dare he play him off to his fair weather crowd as a passing thought they will never fully understand and leave them with the idea that he was a heavy drinker! what a cunt! great version thou! shit crowd! RIP John u big crack hound!

  • utter crap. rubbish cover; not even close to the talent of the original

  • @stacpollaidh

    Sound man. You;re right.

    Simple as that.

  • A lot better than the appalling Eric Clapton cover of this song...at least a bit of passion in this...this song is all about feeling. The performance is a lot better than the intro tho! (Scottish/English - there is a difference James!!!)

  • i cant believe james morrison covering this is the first thing that comes up when you type in 'may you never live'

    haha

  • yeah that is very wrong!!! but james is a good old genuine guy! he really is!.....i really like his stuff and he done john justice on this cover. However you are right on ur comment.....rip john u emotional volcano you!!

  • He loves the sound of his own voice this guy.

  • disrespectful to Mr. Martyn - Crowd laughing that he laughed and James just brushing it over - His guitar playing will never match that of Martyns. - May you never James!

  • he's only doing this as a tribute. listen to watch he's saying about him.

  • totally agree.....well said

  • what do you want them all to do break down and cry.....yeah cos john would want that wouldnt he....hed rather a load of people get rat arsed and play his music...im sure of that!! this performance showed ZERO disrespect to john ....please!! only disrespect was you to james who is a great lad who is just covering a legends song.....

  • the electric ruins it

  • lol he could have said born in england raised in scotland

  • @worddeep3 Right... I agree with you, however, I think John Martyn died 5 days before this taping... He didn't really have time to get his facts straight because I dunno, he's playing shows not doing some Googling, and I think people need to get over that.

  • i wasnt doing some "googling" its called old fashion book reading and being a big fan

  • @worddeep3 I didn't mean you, are you world famous? No need to be touchy. Happy holidays!

  • never said i was and im sorry just seemed that you was aiming it at me merry xmas

  • thay sure do!!

  • I don't see what's so wrong with him covering it. And people calling the audience for not knowing John Martyn - there's a difference between not knowing and disliking. It is likely that a bunch of his fans went home that night and discovered some more John Martyn. Whatever you think of the cover, that is a great thing

  • Total lack of respect towards the Maestro Mr Morrison. Shame on you. If u ever manage to achieve anywhere close to the passion, honesty & writing ability of the great JM, you'll be doing well. Johnny come lately skimmimg the surface, need to be more authentic if you want real respect. Audience clearly philistines by their reaction proving they've never heard of JM. Top marks for trying to educate them, but not in such a flippant & disrespectful way. Sorry you'll never hold a candle to the Man.

  • couldnt have said it better myself

  • James Morrison..........

    I LOVE YOUUU

  • god bless James Morrison for doing this cover and tribute to one of Britain's finest singer/songwriters , I noticed how the audience really enjoyed it . My estimation of James has just risen by 100% great version as well!!!

  • Yeh he's a tit.

You notice almost NO-ONE reacted when he said John Martyn's name?

Please don't tell me all James Morrion's fans are that deprived?

  • Everybody should stop being so crazy about this. He did it as a tribute to Martyn.

I think it's a good cover. And you should ease up. Morrison was doing it out of respect.

    RIP John Martyn.

  • Not that bad, actually. Better than Clapton and "America"'s lame versions.... Long Live John Martyn!!!!!

  • so saffsgrandad he is not fit to lace johns shoe's or drinks(whateva that means) but good on him for paying tribute to john martyn, id say james morrison is so glad you kinda approve.

  • i thought it was alright...what a "nice" rendition. needed a little more umph!

  • Sorry Mr Morrison, good musician though you may be within the context of your own genre, in this context you are not fit to lace John's boots.

Thinking about it and bearing in mind John's favourite passtime, I ought to say "not fit to lace John's drinks"

That said, good on you for paying tribute to a great and much missed icon .

  • i enjoyed that, maybe james aint so bad after all, thanks.. x

  • deborahthezebra. Sorry darling, song was written by John, not Eric. Mr James Morrison, I think dcurrn was fair. When I found out John was dead I made some hasty comments about tributes too. I think you actually did a good effort (no easy to do of a man with such standing in the music industry). Think you should be a bit more careful on what you say on stage though. If I had been in the croud during your introduction I would probably have tried to jump on the stage and kill you. Be cool bud.

  • Show some respect? James Morrison shouldve shown some respect to John Martyn by firstly getting it right that he had scottish parents and considered himself scottish despite being born in england, and secondly by not even attempting to come close to a decent cover of "may you never" He doesnt deserve the priviledge.

  • Could do with being a little harder-edged, but a nice rendition nonetheless. Kudos to the man for the respect.

  • I think it would be nicer to hear more of James' voice and less of the other guitarist....

  • Great song.. Thanks James .. although you really aren't fit to lace John Martyn's shoes.. even if he was pissed or sober.. Scottish or English.

  • Hey guys. According to his website, John was born in surrey but grew up in Glasgow. He also spent his latter years (with his second {i think!} wife) in Kilkenny, Ireland and Scotland. From what I can tell from his live perfomances (the talking parts!) he retained his English accent.

Anyway, who gives a shit where he was born? The guys is a legend and his passing is a loss to music! RIP

  • Aye, but johns dad was scottish and he spent most of his childhood in scotland so i'd say he's scottish. anyway, the guy was a legend

  • dont think anyone would worry about this guy getting int a bar room fight

  • An ENGLISH GUY !!!

John Martyn was Scots, he lived most of his later years in Kilkenny in Ireland but he was Scots definately not English.

James shows huge amounts respect.... Aye Right !!

  • Lol, sorry to disappoint, but John was born in Surrey, he just moved to Scotland when he was young. But hey, let's not split hairs ;)

  • LOL!! Nuckpang, you rule! Thanks :)

And btw, steviethejudge, he does mention that Martyn is from Scotland. So he was an English guy, from Scotland. Or a Scottish guy, from England. Either way, it is not an insult.

"Martyn was born in New Malden, Surrey, England... and he spent his childhood alternating between England and Scotland."

  • (*Bows*) Any time :)

  • I dont mind James and II know he loves John Martyn but how dare he play him off to his fair weather crowd as a passing thought they will never fully understand and leave them with the idea that he was a heavy drinker! what a cunt! great version thou! shit crowd! RIP John u big crack hound!

  • @Nuckpang I dont mind James and II know he loves John Martyn but how dare he play him off to his fair weather crowd as a passing thought they will never fully understand and leave them with the idea that he was a heavy drinker! what a cunt! great version thou! shit crowd! RIP John u big crack hound!

  • I supposed James doesn't have any "respest" for John, but it is obvious that John is a huge inspiration to James. Listen to his intro to the song; he gets tripped up talking about how much he loves the song and John, he cuts himself off and doesn't realize he didn't even mention the song's title. This was the first time I heard this song, but as he was singing, I felt he was truly singing about John. I'm saddened that you & the two others feel this way, but you are entitled to your opinions.

  • just because james does like the song still doesn mean he should murder it by singing a shit version which did the song no justice at all.

if i heard that song for the first time being sung by james i wouldnt realise how good it was, even the great eric clapton, who actually wrote the original doesnt come close to john martyns version.

just accept it, james is not in the league of either of the 2 so should stick to the average songs he is limited to.

  • John Martyn wrote the original, many people have covered it, but the original song is by John ( god rest his troubled soul).

People of the calibre of Mr Morrison should stick to the kind of stuff he's used to churning out. But then its always a choice between authentic talent or something resembling talent.

  • Awsome song. Check out John martyn after ived listened to this song. and john martyn Is a amazing performer. Sings with so much passion. Check him out if you like James!

  • Please please release this as a single this is amazing!

  • hey i was there! yay! he was mind-blowingly amazing, and i fell in love with this song immediately.

  • yay! he was INCREDIBLE. my face had a ridiculous grin on it the whole show. we should keep him a secret in the states so he can be all ours! i love this song so much, i've been listening to it non-stop and turned it into an mp3 :D i hope he does a studio cover/live session with this song. thx for your comment!
