This can be applied to any game really. My main game being League of Legends I randomly encountered a group of 4 guys who I regularly play with and even talk about IRL stuff with. Makes the game worth coming back for, friends are a great motivator eventhough they are Turkish and Polish and I live in the Netherlands. Internet has no boundaries
Like an idiot I skipped those recommended 50 practice matches, did the five placement matches (and since I watched more Starcraft than I played) I got dumped in Gold and I'm getting the shit kicked out of me :D WOO !
I got starcraft 2 the summer of 2011, i was afraid to get my ass kicked online and i thought it was hard. So i just played battlefield and other fps. Now FPS is so fucking boring. So 2 weeks ago i picked this game up again, tried all races, and with help from some friends and Day9 i'm kicking ass of the players in bronz with Zerg. Now i hope for a promotion.
@ChiyosukeBLC then just dont forget about giving your opponent an unexpected compliment when you lose instead of getting mad :D awesome idea provided by Day[9]
@AproxVI By playing more games might get you ingame friends you can practice with. And your goal won't be to win, it's to improve and make progress.... from their when you start play more and more, you'll get better and win cause you start understanding the game
I like this. But I'm still a person who has never played a game of SC2 Multiplayer. Where is something for me? You're speaking in terms that are totally foreign to me. What's the point in probes and pylons? What do they do. Where is a resource like that for someone like me?
What do I do if I don't really have any friends who like SC2? I have one but my skill level is below his and he doesn't like watching tournaments/etc like I do. I've climbed my way to gold but it is getting lonely having SC2 as my hobby...
@GeorgeFrick If you're in highschool or college, see if there's a club for the game. If you've outgrown formal education, check out you local computer hangouts, local forums, or wherever geeks might hang out.
Alternatively, start frequenting major SC2 forums, websites, reddits, or whatever. There are tonnes of people who share this hobby - you're never alone.
man, im kinda new to starcraft and is still in bronze league, clicking my way trough. And you day9 is a f-ing guru and gives me alot of inspiration. thanks bro!
to bad none of my friends play sc2, so i would love som practice friends. write me a pm if ur interesten. im in bronze league on eu.
@LastGladius Its just more space conserving, if it makes you feel better you could build is in a square, or a diamond. But the line helps make a wall that enemy units will have to walk around.
Think I Deserve Better Than Bronce League , But When I Started Had 5 Huge Maps Got Proxipiloned 3 Times 6 Pooled Once And The Otherone Just My Fault But Got 0 Fived Lol
@HoldThisHandTightly Hello man, I have been looking for someone who dont like day9, im intressed in knowing what possible to NOT like about him, so if you would write an answer back to me asap, tnx..
@stickerey bitch day 9 is a hero!!!!!! He saved me from being an extreme newb! not only that but his favorite number is J and hes a muppet...Nothing can beat day 9!
Props to you Day9! Thanks for telling me that i should be playing SC2 for fun! iv been playing it to win, but after this video, it has given me a new insight towards 1v1! Wonderful words of advice!
Recently bought SC II, I want to play online, but it's so stressful. I have to focus on winning and end up not having a lot of fun (except when I win ofcourse). I'll try to force myself to go online some more, but it feels like such a project you know? If there's any other relatively new players out there, PM me if you wanna play!
@CARPELOVERXX Think of it this way, assuming you got this game not to long ago and you just started playing online and after finishing the qualifying matches, you get placed in the Silver League. Imo that's a good start.. its not like you just going to automatically be placed in the Masters League or something.. you have to earn it. lol xD And with you 9 years of experience it shouldn't be that hard getting use to the game mechanics and getting up into higher Leagues. ;D
this was me a month ago, then i realised how pointless it is spending 5 times more time watching a game than playing it. i knew tons about how to play but hardly any of it was my own experience.
if you're doing this at the moment i recommend finding a build order or two that's fun to play, learning the basics of it, then just throwing it out there for an hour on ladder, no matter how many times you lose. you'll get better each game and if you want you can go through the replays later to learn.
@bobzilla211 Actually I spend like 10 more times watching videos and daylies etc than playing :) I just enjoy it more. I will watch this daily and maybe it will change! :)
Find one player to make my hero? But... But... But... Day9... You're my hero! Since i don't want to pick a new hero, i think it's necessary that you start playing.
I understand the 4gate was an example towards a starting Protoss player. However, as a zerg starting player, what do you think should be the BO i should focus on refining? Should I go for refining 1 BO or 3 BOs (one for each matchup)? Great daily :D
@Diomenesx Weeeeell, He siad that you should go for the unit YOU have fun with, I like going for roaches and mutas for example, my friend likes reapers and thors, so that's our tactic in 2v2 games :p
find someone to talk to about sc2 like a brother or family member and preferably get them playing aswell like a friend or someone. :) it really helps, day[9] and his brother played it loads, like what day"awesome"[9] is at 13:04!
..I just cannot wait until the day when my APM gets up there and my minerals are always low. I will get there eventually as I play my 5-10 games a week but it's just hard to play a ton when I have more fun just watching and analyzing professional games.
@jagriff333 I'm in the same spot. I find myself watching pros on Youtube not because I'm scared of playing, but because I'm terrible and at the moment, until I get better, it is WAY more fun just watching the incredibly good people out there.
I am still finding it hard to play since I have so much fun just watching the professional matches in various tournaments. I am new to PC gaming and this is the first real RTS game I'm getting into (BFME and C&C are fun, but nothing like SC2). I want to be a good macro player so I can have those awesome games that I love watching, but it's just coming too slowly
I wouldn't recommend anyone who wants to play Zerg to jump in. It is very different from the Terran you get to play first. I held off my placement matches, and it will pay off.
Motivated me to get away from bots and try against real people. If it goes bad who cares. Just won my first game in the placement and the feeling was so so good. Not had a gaming moment like that in years. Thanks
@Jellybottlebabies I still play SC1. My friends play SC2 and SC1. They both say SC2 is easier to play. I refuse to play SC2 because it just isn't as good as SC1 imo. We play in the iCCup in SC1 and are C rank. They go to SC2 and easily make it to Gold.
You are ridiculously likeable haha, I want a buddy like you! Hell, I don't even play SC2 (got linked to the 'get your ego out' part from League of Legends)
This is awesome! I practice martial arts and my teacher said something similar to Day[9]'s three things of mimic, refine, and experiment. At first you mimic the teacher's movements, then, later on you begin to refine your technique, and once you get a certain amount of experience, you move onto experimenting with the techniques and apply them in new ways. Although my teacher called the experiment part innovate...same thing, almost.
@Alan27Jorn Honestly, I think the term "experiment" is better than "innovate." "Innovate" implies what you're trying has to be successful, and better, in order for you to keep trying it. When you experiment, you may fail a few times, but if you keep with it, only changing a few things, you learn a lot more.
Sounded better in my head... I hope you get my view. XD.
@rpglover101 I do get your view. Experiment does sound better and does imply that you'll fail more than you succeed until you refine your experimentation. However, and this is more true of more skillful players, from their experimentation they have created builds and strategies that others can use successfully. So, in a way, experimentation can eventually lead to innovation. As a Protoss player, I mimic some of Huk's and oGsMC's strategies.
@Alan27Jorn I'm Zerg, and I'm just now starting to actually play Starcraft, mostly just tinkering around. But after watching this video, I'm going to give ladders more of a try. I definitely want to try the creep-highway thing Dimaga did in the HDWT.
@JackEOrr keep winning. if you're losing occasionally it can hurt you pretty bad if the losses are to other bronze players, and the only way you'll get promoted is if you beat the silver and gold players.
@oodeyyou That's pretty much his point. His thing is starcraft. If your thing isn't starcraft, then go do whatever it is that makes you happy. Obviously he won't talk about other things that aren't of interest to him.
I'm gold player, but when new session start I was just too afraid of loosing and I don't play 1v1! Thanks Day9, because of you I star playing 1v1 again and I don't care about loosing :)
@JackEOrr you wont get promoted until you start losing. it will place you against silvers and eventually golds until you start to be 50/50. check the league of your oppoents. if youre playing golds and steamrolling you might jump right to plat. iv seen it done. enjoy winning every game, it doesnt last forever.
Thanks for this! Im coming from a heavily influenced FPS gaming career and i really wanted to try an entire new genre. Starcraft 2 is my first "real" RTS (excluding Age of Empires) and im feeling extremely overwhelmed.
Ive only won one game, but the sensation i got out of it was great and i really want to continue to improve at SC2. This has inspired me to continue playing!
Thanks Day[9], i stopped playing SC2 and now I'm getting back into it and i beat myself up a lot when i loss and you helped to remind me that it's all about having fun. Thanks dude keep up the excellent cast.
Before I played SC I was a long time quake player, where the griefing was nonstop and the egos were titanic. I really wish more gamers would realize that they're playing for fun. Love the message, love the show!
This daily is just what I needed! I've completed the SP campaign and I've played some 100 multiplayer games, but I watch like 10 hours of streams every week and tournaments and stuff. I don't know why that is, I really like the game but I just feel like there's so much at stake that I never want to play it. What if I lose, you know? Hopefully this daily will solve my issues.
the only down side of loosing, is that you might stay in the same league for some ekstra time... really not that big a deal. and you also see which mistakes you might make, but shouldn't! it can make you see some flaws in your playstyle that you otherwise wouldn't have seen!!
i havnt played 100 matches yet, more like 70 or so, but i can see a great improvement in my games :) and you could also pratice with a friend! then it wont hurt your rating :)
@murranizer92 yea that always sucks... it's just a matter of ignoring it i guess... knowing that the person saying it is even more of a looser for being rude! :)
1:04:19 was scary as shit.

Can I have that shirt? :o

I wouldn't recommend anyone who wants to play Zerg to jump in. It is very different from the Terran you get to play first. I held off my placement matches, and it will pay off.

Day[9] who is your hero?
cookie0ish 9 months ago
Motivated me to get away from bots and try against real people. If it goes bad who cares. Just won my first game in the placement and the feeling was so so good. Not had a gaming moment like that in years. Thanks

yh i dont play sc2, lol but i would want to, but it looks so difficult but i did/do play sc1, and i like it a lot, so should i play it? day9?
Jellybottlebabies 10 months ago

Who says games don't apply to real life...
Alan27Jorn 10 months ago
@Alan27Jorn Honestly, I think the term "experiment" is better than "innovate." "Innovate" implies what you're trying has to be successful, and better, in order for you to keep trying it. When you experiment, you may fail a few times, but if you keep with it, only changing a few things, you learn a lot more.
Sounded better in my head... I hope you get my view. XD.
rpglover101 10 months ago

MrSh0time 10 months ago
oddly enough day9 just convinced me to NOT play sc2 and apply these concepts to other things in my life. now that's good.
oodeyyou 10 months ago
@oodeyyou That's pretty much his point. His thing is starcraft. If your thing isn't starcraft, then go do whatever it is that makes you happy. Obviously he won't talk about other things that aren't of interest to him.

@JackEOrr you wont get promoted until you start losing. it will place you against silvers and eventually golds until you start to be 50/50. check the league of your oppoents. if youre playing golds and steamrolling you might jump right to plat. iv seen it done. enjoy winning every game, it doesnt last forever.

i got so pumped when i entered my first 1v1 league and was placed in bronze, then went from 59th to 8th

D4B2 11 months ago
@D4B2
the only down side of loosing, is that you might stay in the same league for some ekstra time... really not that big a deal. and you also see which mistakes you might make, but shouldn't! it can make you see some flaws in your playstyle that you otherwise wouldn't have seen!!
i havnt played 100 matches yet, more like 70 or so, but i can see a great improvement in my games :) and you could also pratice with a friend! then it wont hurt your rating :)
karateLynge 11 months ago
@karateLynge Or the possibility of having a BM opponent who will say some hurtful rude things. Hate that >.<
murranizer92 11 months ago
@murranizer92 yea that always sucks... it's just a matter of ignoring it i guess... knowing that the person saying it is even more of a looser for being rude! :)
