It's called Mermaids because Mrs. Flax, Charlotte and Kate ARE the mermaids. They "swim" from town to town and I would go as far as calling Mrs. Flax a siren which is a mermaid like creature that seduces men into the sea. There are other references like Kate being obsessed with swimming and being a fish in the sea. Mrs. Flax dresses up as a mermaid for a party and the night ends with her wanting to "swim" again after Joe asks her to live with him. Charlotte fights her mermaid like urges, etccc.
Lol the first time I saw this movie was when it randomly appeared on tv and I thought it was about actual mermaids btw I was like 13 . Anyways, as I got more into the movie I realized it didn't really have much to do with mermaids but I was so into it in an extremely weird way. I thought it was weird but i liked it idk
well think she dresses like a mermaid the little girls bedroom gets painted like its under the sea and shes crazy about the water and i may be mistaken but i believe the town they live in is called mermaid
