Rollins was asked about his Vanilla Ice cameo at a spoken-word performance I was at a few years ago; the explanation for how he wound up doing it was basically a malt-mix blend of knowing somebody who crewed for 3rd Bass, and thinking that the idea of mocking Vanilla Ice (Who he thought was a "fucking clown" at the time, but who he's since grown to appreciate) was hilarious.
When you're Henry Rollins, that's pretty much all it takes.
Let me get this straight: they're ripping on Vanilla Ice for looping samples and "gettin' sued".... but they're sampling Peter Gabriel's Sledgehammer. mmmmkay....
Hitting somebody over the head with a cane will get you Assault and Battery, not cool. You could seriously hurt somebody by knocking them over the head like that.
@1993bluegt That's the irony of it. A lot of it really was crap. That's the entire reason 3rd Bass is dissing Vanilla Ice. Lil Wayne is the Vanilla Ice of today. You still have dope underground shit out there, and even really good semi-mainstream shit. Just have to LOOK for it now.
Ten years later and this song still has relevance. Look at the pop trash out there who call themselves real mc's: Kanye, Lil Wayne, will.i.am., even Jay-Z.
They can be whites but Mc Serch is from Far Rockaway (Black neighbourhood) and Pete Nice is from South Floral Park (Blackneighbourhood) they are real boys from the ghetto
@phantomscaler Haha, Tim McGraw? Yes, that's a SMH. They look similar but I can't picture McGraw rapping and swinging a cane. Besides, McGraw and Nice have distinctive voices.
This song is just as relevant today as it was 20 years ago if not more,...Need I mention Jermaine Dupree, Lil Bow Wow, Lil Wayne, Drake, Soulja girl,....the murders of true hip hop,...
3rd base was was all good, did anyone notice them making fun of Vanilla Ice ? thumbs up if you did.there was always this beef with Vanilla Ice and 3rd base.
Thanks for putting this up and the list of the samplings. Kind of a shame that it got turned into a one-hit wonder for, ironically enough, jabbing at the one hit wonders. They're a solid group.
this song sux...3rd bass always thought they were so much better than vanilla ice on all levels when in fact they were just the same except vanilla ice actually had skills where as 3rd bass had the skills of a pre-schooler...
@munkeedragon lmao, dude 3rd bass was actually accepted by the (hip hop) community. their skill level is much underrated infact. and the people that like them the most are hardcore hiphop enthusiasts. u must be a kid.
@ren2020ky I can second that. 3rd Bass was well respected at that time. "Dialect" was pretty well received. Pete (Peter J Nash now) did a pretty nice baseball documentary a while back. The song I liked most on that album- "Problem Child" (deep song, deeper video). Serch has ALWAYS been respected. You cross the audiences they had, you did something right. They were respected because they didn't try to be someone else. Richy Rich, underrated.
BTW, all the samples on this, and most any other commercially available hip-hop recording, have been cleared, and royalties paid. In the case of this track, the most prominent samples were Peter Gabriel's "Sledgehammer", The Who's "Eminence Front" and a bit of "You Haven't Done Nothin'" by Stevie Wonder. You're welcome.
@80sunshower A little history lesson, since I'm assuming you're too young to understand. Hip-hop has been using samples since Sugarhill Gang rapped over Chic's "Good Times". It's part of the art form, as long as it's done legally. What Vanilla Ice did was claim to have changed the bass riff from Queen's "Under Pressure" for use as the hook in "Ice Ice Baby", and therefore not have to pay royalties
@uselessShvte like im sure you are that "Fat ass" has more money than u'll ever see. He still makes bank producing and running his own radio show...oh and have u ever heard of "Nas"? well guess who discovered him and put him on...thats right "Fat Ass" did. 20 years later, we could make the same song. But instead of targeting vanilla ice, we can target lil wayne and 50 cent. Its not about making billions on a bottle of water, its about something bigger.
@ckelley63 One hit wonders? hahahaha just cause they wasnt commercial dont mean they was one hit wonders. what about underground hip hop now a days? i guess they're all one hit wonders. Search even put out classic solo shit. fuckin kids now a days.
It's funny because these two guys dissed so many rappers in their career and then when they broke up and had solo careers they dissed each other MUCH worse than when they dissed these rappers. Vanilla Ice was lame.
@sxr951 I think people are too hard on Robert Van Winkle. 'Vanilla Ice' was nothing but a media-created, pre-fabricated "White rapper"; the managers/record companies already knew who 'Vanilla Ice' was before they even met Van Winkle, not the other way around...It was basically like a director picking an actor to play a part in a movie.
Granted, "Vanilla Ice" was lame as hell, it's not who Van Winkle was as a person. He made the mistake of selling out to get rich, and it ended up ruining him.
born in '97, i fucking love 3rd bass. my favorite song being monty hall, i love all things all things old school and underground. i guess im a self hating hipster in a way. but anyway, i gotta thank my dad for exposing me to real music from a very young age and not letting me be a sheep to the mainstream media.
@JaceMandel Haha...good times. I was 14 when this song came out. I remember that era very well; people saying "not!" or "psyc!".
Another thing I completely forgot about, until just now, was yelling "Chops!" then giving someone a karate chop to the back of the neck for doing something stupid, or clumsy. I don't know if this was just a regional thing from Chicago (my home town) or if it was more widespread, but it was really big from 1989-1991.
When I was about 5 or 6 years old, I remember I heard some goofy song on the radio, and the only part I could remember was the chorus. Tonight, just for fun, I looked for the song and found this. Hearing this song that I may never have heard again after so long literally gave me chills. Never mind that it's bizarre, it' s still another part of my childhood recovered thanks to Youtube.
I wanna see someone administer the sellout beat down to Eminem and Jay - Z. I excuse Dr. Dre because hes done enough dope shit to be excused for his wack commercial bullshit. God knows most black performers retire to nothing, unfortunantly.
In 90 or 91, I came home and my GF was listening to "Ice Ice Baby." My stereo was consequentiality smashed into maybe 5 million pieces. I love this song. it was obvious at the time who it was about. ... To anyone who talked shyt about Henry Rollins: HAHAHAHAHAHA Rollins in GOD. Look over your shoulder before trying to sleep tonight.
It's funny that when people talk about white people in Hip Hop, the name's Eminem and Bestie Boys always come up, but these guys are always overlooked and I think thats because they were just so Hip Hop that peolpe didn't see race with them. They had alot of respect from the hip hop community back in the day.
hip hop is dead the south kill hip hop like the nigga soulja boy we need more white raper to save hip hop like lil wyte jellyroll and haystak white people can save rap
back then it was clean and you could actually undertsand what the heck they are saying. and they actualyy had talent, unlike now where they only rely on a catchy/obnoxious melody.
Back when rap was about skilfully crafted lyrics, meaningful issues, or just partying with your friends. 3rd base (rightfully or wrongfully) have fun dissing the proliferation of sell-out pop rappers who demean the art form with simplistic gimmicky songs with a lack of thought provoking content. I guess the message never got through, as most rap today fits that profile.
The weasel family includes - Ferret, stoat, polecat, mink, ermine, black-footed ferret, long tailed weasel, least weasel. Other relatives of the weasels are martens, otters, badgers, and wolverines.
This is the best 3rd Bass video ever. I love how they dis that pathetic excuse for a rapper Vanilla Ice. They should've reunited and dissed Kevin Federline, another pathetic excuse for a rapper.
Funny how they say "U stole somebody's record than you looped it, you looped it" but they are looping Peter Gabriel's "Sledgehammer" on this track haha. But, i'm sure they cleared the sample first. Love 3rd Bass, big fan.
@DEFSCOTTYB You know what else is ironic about this song? They were airing out the people who had hit records on the pop charts, and "Pop Goes The Weasel" was a huge pop hit for them! LOL!!!
it's amazing as a 27 year old man i listen to this and i swear to goodness this song from 1991 is better than any of the bullshit that is out now, it's ironic that 3rd bass said rap was going Pop in 1991. it's like they predict the future because in 2011 all this Nikki Minaj, Drake, Waka Flocka, and Lil' Wayne bullshit is pure CRAP...
I always wondered if Pete Nice actually needed the cane because he never danced in the videos.

JohnSmithAprilMay 9 months ago
@JohnSmithAprilMay
pretty sure that was the intention, to involve a well-known sample.. it was part of the message
JakkGryphon 9 months ago
back then it was clean and you could actually undertsand what the heck they are saying. and they actualyy had talent, unlike now where they only rely on a catchy/obnoxious melody.

DEFSCOTTYB 11 months ago
@DEFSCOTTYB You know what else is ironic about this song? They were airing out the people who had hit records on the pop charts, and "Pop Goes The Weasel" was a huge pop hit for them! LOL!!!
MyJunior1975 9 months ago
sweet'ness now this is rap with cool'ness bless
badboybaldy1 11 months ago
it's amazing as a 27 year old man i listen to this and i swear to goodness this song from 1991 is better than any of the bullshit that is out now, it's ironic that 3rd bass said rap was going Pop in 1991. it's like they predict the future because in 2011 all this Nikki Minaj, Drake, Waka Flocka, and Lil' Wayne bullshit is pure CRAP...
