  • PERFECTION!!!

  • soooooooo sweet!

  • J adore cette version

  • I love Stevie, he so amazing! I wish he wasn't so underrated!

  • @MrWittlez "Underrated"? Surely you jest, MrWittlez!

  • @donaldnewmanmedone Perhaps I am wrong, but from my point of view he seems pretty underrated.

  • @MrWittlez Not "wrong", perhaps, just unaware that Winwood has enjoyed International fame ever since he was a teen w/ the Spencer Davis Group. He then went on to perform in Traffic and Blind Faith, both hugely successful "Super-Groups". In 1986 "Higher Love" won a Grammy for Record of the Year, and Steve also received a Grammy for Best Male Pop Vocal that year. In 2005 he was honoured as BMI Pop Icon and in 2008 was ranked 33 on Rolling Stone Magazines list of top 100 All-time Greatest Singers.

  • @donaldnewmanmedone I knew all that, perhaps I'm just a little upset that in list like "100 Greatest Artist of All Time" like the one Rolling Stone did Steve Winwood, Traffic, or Blind Faith failed to show up period but yet they put rappers and shit like that on the list, and Vh1 put shit like Jay-Z and Beyonce way above Traffic!

  • @MrWittlez Gotcha. Respect from Michigan, usa. Power to the Peaceful.

  • @donaldnewmanmedone Thank you from Alabama!

  • His voice.........

  • Pure British blue-eyed soul coming from a "kid" from Birmingham. Stevie was, and is, a "once in a generation" musical prodigy, and I feel lucky to have been around to experience his music back then (and today)!

  • Yes i love it!

  • @AsrudGilberto , It can be easilly done

  • Apparently it was all lucky timing that Steve discovered the music of Ray Charles just as his voice broke at 13. Up till then he never thought of being a singer.

  • Forgive me but is it something in the Tea that make British People Sing Soul Music so amazingly!! Dusty Springfield, Lisa Stansfield, Amy Winehouse, Duffy, Natasha Bedingfield also have continued the tradition. Who would have thought that such a Soulful Voice came from a Sixteen Year Old White boy from England.

  • @laminage

    and Eric Burdon

  • It's just incredible!!! The voice, the music... !!! OMG!!! Goose bumps all over!

  • @Kikoo27 He has got the same wonderful voice today at 62 !!! And he still makes music and goes touring with another amazing "old" musician as Eric Clapton

  • @MsDayowl that's right! I went to see him and EC and he played this song :)

  • Lightyears away from today´s crap!

  • His voice doesn't match him. It's unbelievable

  • I used to freak my jazz-loving (Richard "Groove" Holmes, Brother Jack McDuff AND the Ray!) organ playing bandmate with this one in 1967--the whole band had thought the Spencer Davis Group was a Black soul group from Detroit!

  • WHAT GREAT TIMING...GREAT BAND......GREAT VOCALS,SUCH SOUL....WOW,I'M WET,........

  • This THE END!!!

  • SUPER LIKE!!!!

  • Who cares about the damn subtitles! Just listen to that Stevie sing and play incredible organ!!

  • It simply does not get any better than this. Stevie's voice so soulful, his incredible organ playing and FINALLY one incredible deep bassline, that would get anyone laid!

  • very good!!!!, the Winwood voice is fantastic, Ray Charles is unforgettable in this song but Steve is great singing with organ!!!

  • OMG Stevie is about 16 on this and it's still what we all want to hear him sing 35 years later

  • @Catwoman371: Let's lose the "Stevie was 16" myth. Stevie turned 17 in May 1965. In this video, he was a couple of months short of his 19th birthday. Oh, and it's 43 years later, not 35.

  • perfect.

  • This song was written by some Jewish guys... not Ray Charles. Even though the Ray Charles version is probably the best... this version is AWESOME!

  • He's 17 or 18 when he did this.

  • @championshipstatus: 18 -- a couple of months short of his 19th birthday.

  • OMG and this was sung live, FANTASTIC!!

  • Darn Finnish sub-titles!! I couldn't wait for the song to "Finish!"

  • As close to Ray Charles as we need. Excellent...

  • It's like someone else's voice coming out of his mouth.... amazing.

  • hells teeth!

  • I saw him performing this song at the Manchester Odeon in the mid 60's. The other acts on the bill were the Rolling Stones and the Walker Brothers. Amazing!!!

  • @Exmanc I wa there!!! WE were all standing on the seats when Spencer Davis Group were on and sat down when Stonesw came on. You must be Twisted Wheel

  • Great !!

Also check out Richard Manuels version from Saturday night Live 1976 , just before Tha Last Waltz .

  • Just awesome. Steve Winwood still is!

  • @Paisley194 Yeah that might be because not all Fins understand english !!!!! lol

  • The first time I heard Steve Winwood sing, I would have bet my car it was a 40 year old black man. I about passed out in shock when I found out he was an 18 year old white kid. Being one at the time, I didn't think anyone like me could sing like that.

  • @hockey6408 I agreed with you.Never heard a black coloured voice in a such intensive way ,captured in the body of white man,or white kid in this case.Nor we,but even afroamericans on the begining ,couldn't believe that it wasn't their black brother.

  • Damn, first time hearing that guy ! i was chocked when he opened his mouth, I was like what that can't be him singing ... shit, that was good, GREAT vocals

  • I agree ! 1966-67 Winwood was rock God !!He was only 17 years old after having appeared, and won award as the best rock vocalist, guitar and keyboards player. After Ray Charles,no one sang this song like Winwood.

  • @TheLittledog2 agreed

  • This is so good, it's just ridiculous. Winwood rocks. That is all.

  • What makes this so good to me is Winwood put a new intrepretation to it, a unique version. Good or bad, I didn't like it at first but really started liking it at the middle, he did something unique.

  • A realy good version of a classic song by Stevie. TY for uploading this

  • Many people think that after Charles original, this is the most impressive version of that song.Winwood was the highest ranking vocal and untouchable

    then.

  • phantastic musician and brilliant singer !!! nail it ... :D

  • Brilliant! However, I'm grateful we have both Winwood's and Ray Charles' versions as both are beautiful.

  • Those were the days my friend!

  • Porca puttana ke roba!!!!!!!!!!!! Grandiosi!

  • God!!! Steve Winwood, is too good of a singer for this earth!

  • his voice is so soulful. dare i say more. his voice is so recognizable. there's only ONE Steve Winwood. God Bless.

  • Its an awesome version-up there with Ray Charles & Willie Nelson

  • Exellent! What a genius to play and sing this song at the age of only 18! Awesome!

  • The Hammond in this vid is an M-102, same as Matthew Fisher used on Whiter Shade Of Pale and Rick Wright played in the Pink Floyd Live In Pompeii film. Got one in my stable awaiting some TLC. He's not using any Leslie either, just the onboard scanner vibrato.

  • I have a m-3. No leslie though. Do you have any tips on setting the tone-bars to get some of these sweet ol' tones?

  • Really, no leslie? Wow sounds awesome hey? I guess steve could play a casio and still sound pretty cool though!

  • how in the hell is he british? he sounds SO much like a black dude, but EVEN better

  • @BailoAnoche How the hell is he only about 19?

  • Try he's only 17

  • Steve Winwood's version is better than Ray Charle's:) I heard another version on piano which I thought was better but I can't find it anywhere!

  • wonderful!

  • What Hammond model is that and please how can I make my M-103 sound that sweet and "nasty"? :-)

  • I think its an E model (Might be an H but I don't see any reversed keys).

  • SDG were awesome, but I never dug the song.

  • Agreed its an amazing sound, but Winwood was (and is) and amazing Hammond player and so much of it comes down the volume swells, drawbar settings, phrasing, feel....and he was just 18 years old? I truly hate him !:)

  • They were my favourite then .

I still keep their EP with " blues in F " , unreal skills of a 18 years old kid !

  • Ha well thats great! I now have more experience with Hammonds, so I'll have to agree with you on that, and plus I now own an M-100!

  • Eric Clapton mentions listening to this version and could not tell if it was Ray Charles or not, I now hear and see why...Steve Winwood has an incredible voice.

  • Amazing Hammond organ player either ! it survives beyond the times in which tons of synthesizers are defunct without glory. Thanks Steve for giving such blend of voice + Hammond organ with rotary sound.

  • Couple of friends of mine still own Hammonds and play them in bands here in Oz. Great to go out and see them keeping the sound going. Hammond organ with a Leslie box :) Can't beat it for a real sound.

  • One of my favourite bands of the sixties, saw them several times at Redcar Jazz Club.... Wonderful, and this track is one of the best Steve Winwood does.

  • I still can't believe it. Every time I look at him, I see a skinny, scruffy little white kid. Yet every time he opens his mouth, what a sound, what a voice. A pure soul, gospel voice that is a pure and as proud as anything you've every heard. Sublime.

  • great voice, great phrasing, great playing.

  • What a voice Stevie Winwood has,he's only a kid here! thanks dac10012.

  • such a genius - unreal

  • What a classy performance of a classic song! These guys were great!

    Thanks for sharing.

  • Fantastic! Thank you for posting!

  • Steve's voice was already grand...in spite of his young age....he plays guitar & organ, he is soo talented...awesome.

  • F ing amazing! anyone says skinny white geeks can't sing, I say hear this.

  • What a voice!

  • very good jazzz organ solo, he nails all the changes..

white/black... he nails it...great band too!!

  • -LONDON

  • screw your silly little arguments below..

    THAT was good music.

    these guys fukkin rock too

  • Dix sur dix!

  • ilkkatapio your knowledge of organs astounds but you have not seen the imported series than ran from 1967 to march 1969 they built 3 left handed models one sold unbeknowingly to procol harum which went on to produce whiter shade of pale it was known in the trade as clavi no 2 and was white with black string detailing have you seen a picture of it?

  • *****

  • He had Ray to inspire him....

  • best vocals!

  • SWEET and bitter sweet ...

  • Notice how Winwood waits for the last possible beat to hit the lyrics and sings it sparse- just like brother Ray Charles. This is musical handing -down of tradition from one generation to another. Great riffs and tone on the organ, unhurried soloing - but grooves

  • wow he s awesome

  • Man he really knows how to sing with some soul. And I love that there Hammond M3 is it?

  • this song just helped me get lucky, sexy bass line to it especially when played on a 2000w mackie PA System

  • Stevie come back to your roots in Erdington, Birmingham UK for one off performance !!!!

  • winwood 4ever!

  • clapton hendrix jagger were all amazed at stevies capabilities at such a young age totally unbelivable better than ray in my opion

  • MIck Jagger.... :D

  • Hold on now! Settle down! Better than Ray! No. Simply, no. He is so good, period, and amazing for a little bitty white boy, but better than brother Ray...??????!!!!

  • He is what he is, chump. The big difference between Winwood and and a goofball like Jammie Fox, is that Winwood is not immitating here...he's just being himself sing a song like he sings it. And that is what make it original. He's not trying to sing like Ray. Whether or not it is better than Ray...well, that's open to opinion. But, it certaininly is a great rendition...for anybody of any color. P.S. You're a chump for bringing up color...music has nothing to do with color...mate.

  • "He's not trying to sing like Ray."

He is using the same gospel inflections Charles used in his. How is he not sounding like him? What gospel choir did Winwood grow up singing in?

  • @KhemuLuxons It has nothing to do with inflection. In fact, I'm almost certain you have no idea was the word means from the way you described it. His voice is his voice. That the way Winwood sounds. Yes, he's singing a gospel song. But unless you are legally deaf, no offense if you are, he sounds absolutely nothing like Ray Charles.

  • @redmrlove13 I stand corrected, maybe phrasing might be the correct word. Charles was the first to sing it in the gospel style and his has become the definitive version. Winwood has said that Charles was a great influence on him. Windwood couldn't and wouldn't have chosen this style if he had not heard Charles first. He learned it second hand through recordings by Charles & similar artist. Charles developed this style by singing in the Black American church, living it.

  • @KhemuLuxons Soul is gospel's secular sister. Charles is one of the pioneers of soul singing. Where in UK at that time would Windwood have found a Black Baptist or Pentecostal church to develop a gospel sound? Windwood would not have been able to sit in on an impromptu gospel session and hang in with the likes of Charles & a gospel legend like Sam Cooke.

  • I dont know....He clearly sounds like he is emulating Ray Charles. It is remarkable. He sounds possessed. I really like it.

  • Incredible what a white English kid can pull off ! >? isn't it .... Looking forward to seein him at the Mile High Music Fest, Denver Colorado July 19th, 2008 ... my 40th Birthday !

  • Hello

    Yup, it is awesome!

I think Van Morrison was on par with things like Gloria...

  • I have seen him singing this song in 1965. Great!!

  • Lucky you. What a singer. There's never been a white boy who could do Ray Charles like this and still manage to keep an individual identity and not just ape and copy. He was/is(?) so awesome. Winwood is the poop. Too bad Blind Faith couldn't keep it together longer.

  • His goal at the time was to sound like ray charles

  • he sounds better,though....being 'white bloke',from Birmingham...-anyway,both awesome!

  • What an AMAZING VERSION .ITS SO GOOD TO BE ABLE TO "WITNESS" THESE ARCHIVED FILMS... YOU CAN HEAR TRAFFIC, COMIN -W/ BLIND MAN & FEELIN GOOD.

  • can you believe winwood?????, so bad ass at such a young age.

That is one english white boy with A LOT OF SOUL!!!!

  • what show or concert is this from?

  • According to the "Living Archives" website of YLE, the Finnish Broadcasting Corporation, this show was taped at Studio 2 in Helsinki, March 1967. It took them 3 hours to get the sound right. (Thanks to Ilkkatapio!)

  • I think it was the Marquee Club in Wardour Street in London.

I saw him playing there in 1966

  • I may have been there the same night

  • Wow Winwood!

  • Great voice, great on the keys, guitar...man, what a guy! I enjoy this, as well as Ray and Richard Manuel...I wish I could see Richard sing this in his teens..too bad there's no footage

  • you are totally right.

I thought about Richard Manuel too.Never thought someone else could sing as Richard but then i saw him ..

    great ..

  • wow can u belive a lil white kid can put out that much power!

  • This kid's got talent! I predict a big career for him!

  • i just saw him and clapton at madison sq garden and he played this song. amazing. great phrasing.

  • he sounds older then than he does now! at 17/18 he had such a great feel for RnB, so much soul in his voice! massive, massive talent!!!!

  • If Steve Winwood would sing some Rolling Stones and/or Rod Stewart songs he would make them hits all over again.

  • he sounds alot like ray charles

  • yeh - we couldn't believe a kid from Birmingham could even get near to emulating Ray but heres the proof

  • Yes when I saw him in Pistoia, italy 2 yrs ago he admitted he would have liked to master gospel songs like RChalres, but he already does, doesn't he? Super...

  • Brilliant! Another side of Steve Winwood. Glad he is touring.. His "Arc of a Diver" CD (then it was a cassette) helped me through a negative time in my life. Steve Winwood rules!

  • Incredible voice. Mike Jackson is the only other kid I can think of that had a voice like that when he was young.

  • You forgot Stevie Wonder

  • Yeah! When Georgie Fame heard Spencer Davis group play this song in the Flamingo club he first thought it was an old experienced blues singer. Instead it was the super talented Winwood. Sad that he never got the recognition he was worth!

  • Tremendous. What talent Winwood has -- he's almost a kid, leading a major young rock group, and pauses to lay down a perfect jazz track, with vocals, chords and solo all sounding like a fine, seasoned 50 year-old jazz artist.

  • He is a kid, these videos are from 1966, he was born in 1948, do the maths, he is so very talented, i cant think a kid that can or has sung like this at such a young age, let alone his musical skills, brilliant
