why is this incredible? People are spoiled by today's technology and take everything for granted. This was a marvel to look at in 1978! Aside from the landmark film Star Wars, there weren't many technological advancements in film to compare. Luigi Cozzi's Starcrash? Corman's Battle Beyond The Stars? They're cheezy in their own way. One of the Turkish rip-offs? Utter rubbish! Believe me, Star Wars was one of a kind. That is why Lucas sued Battlestar Galactica into cancellation.
I actually saw this on Tv when I was a kid. It isnt half bad. Its almost a live action version of Yamato/Starblazers. And yes, part of its success was due to Star Wars in thelate 1970's. How do you think Battlestar Galactica or Buck Rogers got on the air in the states?
This was made before SW came out in Japan so quit with the "Star Wars ripoff' nonsense! That's like saying the filmmakers were psychic...they had no clue Star Wars would be such a huge success.
Unfortunately, as much as I am a fan of all things Toho & Tsuburaya, I must honestly report this was indeed inspired by Star Wars and was made AFTER Lucas' 1977 technological achievement (just as Toei's "Message From Space" with Vic Morrow & Sonny Chiba was) in 1978.
@BrooklynChivalry As a brother New Yorker I totally agree with you! Toho was about to lay off the old special effects crew. They said they could deliver an epic space film under budget. They were right; under budget and ridiculous! A total ripoff of two Classics: Battle in Outter Space and Atragon! They Ripped off a Star Wars' wookie painted it green and made him horny! Sadly;( Battle In outer space) was an inspiration for the space battles in Star Wars; and for ID4.
Can anyone help me finding this movie? I can only find it on amazon from USA, but I am from Germany, other code and too high shipping fees.. I would really love to see it again..
No, this was actually an attempt to cash in on Star Wars's success in Japan and also resurrect the space films the studio Toho did in the past which started with The Mysterians, Battle In Outer Space, and Gorath. Unfortunately, the film is rather awful and the movie was not very successful.
FYI, dumbass, the Japanese film studios had smaller budgets back in the 1970's because of the state of the economy back then. A few companies, like Daiei, went completely under.
Besides, I really like those miniatures. They have a certain style to them that I like even if they are a tad unrealistic. It's sort of the same thing with me and lionel trains. Sure lionel trains aren't as realistic as HO or G scale locomotives but there's still something about them that railroad buffs all over love about them.
I'd LOVE to watch this film. looks brilliant. Just don't get this stuff on British TV anymore, full of bloody talent shows and bollocks like that.

Why is such an epic and expensive space battle accompanied by such silly pop music?
RobbyArt 5 months ago
Wasn't that Chewbacca I saw in a couple of frames? Freelancing on his way back from filming StarWars no doubt.

@dionaea2008 I saw that too! It was Chewie! WTF?!

Incredible that the Japanese were still using primitive late 1950's style special effects and production designs as late as 1978.

It's hard to believe this was made at the time of Star Wars/Battlestar Galactica.
Japan/Hong Kong cinema will never match Hollywood in quality effects and set design.

It does look cool for a Japanese B rated movie with Godzilla like special effects. Least the Japanese have their view of Sci-Fi.

Still in the Showa period-this movie was made in 1977-two years after "Mechagodzilla's Counterattack".
