I grew up listening to Amebix. In moments where I had no hope, songs like Chain Reaction saved me. Nope, this doesn't sound like old Amebix, but it's equally as brilliant. A moment of salvation in the darkest hour.
amebix always had that supernatural characteristic in their songs, one of the most interesting and intelligent bands of their era (i suppose). although this sounds totally different i think its still good, and the true spirit of the band remains in there with stig and the baron :)
Are there any other not so hard songs by them? i really really love this song, but so have found the rest rather hard, as I am not into metal :( thanks
your right hoosiermf. i think the video is fantastic. just to hear new amebix is phenomenal. They were so good in concert on the reunion tour, I was just hoping for some more heavy riffs.
I think it's an easy listen. Great tunes. Some of the guitars sound like they've been lifted from Geordie's demos. Not a bad thing at all. These two great bands age like fine wines. If you have something to say, a new tune to play, then you can go on till you are a hundred.
@depressor If one goes back through ones old records of both bands in question, then one may realise that new KJ don't sound too dissimilar to mid 80's Amebix. Did Brighter Than A Thousand Suns (1986) sound like Arise (1985)? Certainly not.
Does Absolute Dissent (2010) sound remotely like Arise? Absolutely! I rest my case. :-)
Amebix never really fit in 100% with any particular genre, so I why expect any different now? As for sounding like "modern power metal" - I think that's more down to the production. Amebix were blowing most other bands away many decades ago. I think the new CD is brilliant.
@MorkaGraven I don't hear much, if any Power Metal at all. To me it sounds like they just took huge chapters from Killing Joke. Not that that could be in any way a bad thing, mind.
Am I missing something here ? I love arise and monolith, but this honestly sounds like modern power metal to me. If this song were released by any other band, I think most of the posters praising it here wouldn't give it a chance.
this song would have been so much better if they used the rustic recording equipment of the earlier material...amebix is one of the best bands recorded of all time... they just need a better modern producer.
@FloydMariner Stop being sentimental about the past. Amebix always made the music they wanted to make and this is no exception. They aren't kids living in a squat any more.
@frostybob123 how the hell is this power metal??? there are no guitar solos, no shitty high pitched singing, no stupid lyrics about dungeons and dragons. this would be more like some kind of modern post punk
So far, the new album has a modern Killing Joke type vibe for me. I have absolutely zero complaints on this as modern KJ is crushing. It's a challenging listen, but I'm really liking it so far.
One of my formative memories was in 1982 at the age of 15, meeting Rob in the Studio of Radio West in Bristol during a show called "Punk and Disorderly" hosted by the head of Riot City Records, Si Edwards. The mate with me didn't really get the Anarcho punk thing, asked for his autograph. I cringe even now.
The old imagery had a profound effect on me. I hope this new album doesn't turn them into a parody of themselves. Comments about mystic meanings already? Don't let em drag you down!
I am so happy. I loved Amebix, and always have the Arise cd in the car. The wait is over...tonight I am going to drink and be merry...lets hope we get a tour!!!!!!!!
I grew up with this band. They shaped me into the person I am today. They taught me to be my own man. Being 24, I never got to experience this amazing band the first time around. 'Monolith' was released in '87 - the year I was born - but I must have listened to it on the bus to school every day for nearly a decade between '99-'09. Now this new album will be released this week on the day after my birthday. Strange coincidences. Just listened through the leak: was an emotional experience!
welcome back saw you guys in the riverside newcastle upon tyne many moons ago,still listen to you regularly.personally i think this song would have fitted easily alongside "last will and testament" from monolith slow start slamming finish but with a reborn edge look forward to hearing the new album.be great t see ya play newcastle again if they ever build a decent venue..riverside/mayfair are long gone unfortunatley...
undeniably bad ass video created by our friend Andy! Not only a damn good musician but VFX artist!! Be sure to check him out on twitter (at)andylefton
'...the hands of clocks are bound and time itself is stopped...'
It is hard to express how much the Amebix have meant to me over the past 20 / 25 years or so since I first heard them around the time of the Monolith album. When I first heard news of the reformation I did not expect new music... but the rumours filtered through of a new album.Finally found this a few months ago, listened, with trepidation, but -'rejoice, the great god fear is dead'... A work of genius - roll on the equinox!
this is the song i warm up to everyday. i cant explain the feeling i get when i sing this song. if you feel the emotion and beauty of this song, you know exactly what feeling im talking about. its like a reasurance of the chains chains we broke free from in this world.
Doing what you want to do,in this case,playing the music they want to play,not trying to fit into genre or stupid rules is more punk then you could ever imagine.
For the haters - Sure, it's obviously a bit of a polished evolution from the days of Monolith and Arise, but the guts and harsh beauty are still in there, and the very fact that Rob and company have taken the time away from sword-making on far-off Scottish isles to reignite the epic flames of Amebix should have us all feeling very grateful.
The remastered work on Redux was great, too - proof that good production values can be a GOOD THING!
only two days of work and then i get to see my girlfriend for a week. . .long distance relationships. . .Amebix, you just saved my day with this song. . .
@zachary902101 amebix is now to crust, what star wars is to science fiction. maybe george lucas should produce the special editions of the old songs and release it on profane existence, oh oh wait.
@Dedukrovski - What an odd thing to say. Amebix was crust before "crust" even existed, actually. There wouldn't even be such a categorization without them. Not sure where you are getting your perspective from.
Their primal roots is Sabbath, Motorhead and Killing Joke, they create their own sound mixing bands like that, and the result is not crustcore, but a kind of a metallic post punk. I don't consider any of their songs crust. Crust for me is ENT, Doom, Antisect, etc. Well, but fuck it, this is only a term.
@Dedukrovski - But that's all that crust actually is - punk meeting metal. I'm no scholar on the subject (if such a thing exists) but I know that at some point, the UK peace-punks started listening to a lot of metal, and the result was bands like Amebix and Antisect. ENT too, though I see them more like proto-grind. But these labels are starting to sound kind of silly, eh? In any case, whatever you want to call it, Amebix was definitely a monumental influence.
Some good feedback, some bad feedback. I'll hazard a guess that all the bad is coming from people who were never there. I'm an old bastard and I've been a fan since the beginning. This is quite simply the greatest thing I've heard this year. My vinyl's just turned up in the post a couple of days ago and I for one, can't wait for the album. Roll on September.
Thank you for coming back Amebix. Old Amebix? This is the best shit they've ever put out, if the new album is like this, then its gona be a fucking masterpiece. It's epic, dark, heart-ripping and crusty to the fucking bone. since when has sound evolution and growth in a band been a bad thing. Fuck yeah, welcome back boys!
@mattiacore Agree with every word. They have reached a new level here. Taken the old stuff and really progressed, still keeping their original roots. Excellently put.
I think they mean the alchemical black sun, sol niger, not the nazi one. It makes sense because ravens are apparently associated with sol niger. Please excuse a beginner in mumbo-jumbo if I got it wrong ;)
@MrFin66 yeah it's definitly a tau cross. It's apparently a symbol of death and rebirth so it makes sense. A labrys would have a "knob" at the top above the blades.
@christthi well, I find it hard to believe they've turned fascist, since their lyrics always has been anti-authoritarian. I'd like to hear them explain the symbols though, to end the speculation.
@christthi The labrys, or pelekys, is the double axe Zeus uses to invoke storm. Similar symbols are found in indian and nordic mythology (Indra and Thor).
Cool!! I'm well excited to hear the new album now, I was looking forwards to the new stuff before but this makes it much more interesting, to actually hear songs from where they are at now.
@amebixngnm I don't feel the new album as a new masterpiece like what I expected from the previous albums, but this is the best song in the last 10 years at least.
Some people give me a pain in my arse. A band releases a song that doesn't sound VERBATIM like the stuff they made when they were in their teens and early twenties and they're fucking castigated for it. "Real" Amebix is in the idea and in the message and in the tone of the song. Fair play to Rob, Stig and Roy for realising a dream and for pressing on with the music THEY wanted to make. Lovin it lads, keep it up and fuck the begrudgers.
@depressor Jock drumming????? I hate sports!!!!!! well.....not all. But I gotta say I'm living a childhood dream and busted my ass and payed my dues to get where I'm at today and it didn't just start with Vanilla Ice. There is a history of other band I was involved with. At the end of the day Rob , Stig and I are having the times of our lives.
Roy you don't have to explain yourself.... I think it's amazing what you have accomplished in your journey threw life. You have definately put in the the work and you have gotten what you deserved...
I'm glad you're in Amebix now and can't wait till the LP comes out... Thanks for the music.
f'real man, it's bullshit how many people can hate cause you worked with some people they don't like, people don't understand sometimes how hard it is to earn a living as a musician. also, why does it matter who you worked with? you're a fucking fantastic drummer and it shows in every recording i've heard with you, as well as in the amebix reunion i saw a while back, keep rocking man!
renovados, buelven ala axion con mas fuerza, actualizados como todos , pero sobresaliendo como pocos , de las mejores bandas que hay y abra , leyendas
@crustcrew . i am sure that the album will have a lot more for the older fans of the Band,choosing a single without alienating too many people is a tough one,so hang on in there!
This new single sounds too much metal or better modern metal i listen to amebix for for 16 years now but i really don't like this song i'm sorry but if you ask me it's not that what should it be.
I hope that the album will be good like the others.
OH MY GOD MY FUCKING GOD MY FACE WAS COMING OFF DURING THE LAST 5 MINUTES OF THAT, OH WAIT FUCK, THAT WAS ONLY 5 MINUTES MY FACE WAS EXPLODING EVERYWHERE, I COULDN'T SEE THE TIME FUCK.
AMEBIX REFORM & PLAY OLD STUFF or AMEBIX REFORM & CREATE NEW STUFF ABOUT THE NOW = A POINTLESS NOSTALGIA PANTOMIME or SOMETHING INTERESTING, POIGNANT ABOUT THE NOW ! The past is gone. REALITY OR IMITATION OF PAST REALIT, THERE IS NO CHOICE TO MAKE.
AMEBIX return..........great news to an old duffer who still has his original vinyl of winter and no sanctuary...................musically changed but undoubtedly AMEBIX.
Doesn't really sound like their older stuff, but its still very good. I like it because it has a lot of gothic influence in it

Cool!! I'm well excited to hear the new album now, I was looking forwards to the new stuff before but this makes it much more interesting, to actually hear songs from where they are at now.

livethemetal4449 7 months ago

@depressor
You're fucking depressing me mate, if you don't like the song go and watch something else...
SouthWestWhite 7 months ago 5
@depressor Jock drumming????? I hate sports!!!!!! well.....not all. But I gotta say I'm living a childhood dream and busted my ass and payed my dues to get where I'm at today and it didn't just start with Vanilla Ice. There is a history of other band I was involved with. At the end of the day Rob , Stig and I are having the times of our lives.
its not so bad......life is great!

@RoyMayorga1
Roy you don't have to explain yourself.... I think it's amazing what you have accomplished in your journey threw life. You have definately put in the the work and you have gotten what you deserved...
I'm glad you're in Amebix now and can't wait till the LP comes out... Thanks for the music.

@RoyMayorga1
f'real man, it's bullshit how many people can hate cause you worked with some people they don't like, people don't understand sometimes how hard it is to earn a living as a musician. also, why does it matter who you worked with? you're a fucking fantastic drummer and it shows in every recording i've heard with you, as well as in the amebix reunion i saw a while back, keep rocking man!
FleshIsFlawed 7 months ago 2
@RoyMayorga1
Keep it real man, never mind the haters! Great job with the song and the production. Its amazing!

This new single sounds too much metal or better modern metal i listen to amebix for for 16 years now but i really don't like this song i'm sorry but if you ask me it's not that what should it be.
I hope that the album will be good like the others.
