i think what grendel's mother is doing at the end is pretty obvious.

gaiman is pretty big into "the nature of things." and it was the nature of grendel's mother to have a child by a king.

@Lywnis i was thinking a mix between a succubus: seducting female demon and yes, some kind of water monster. funny thing is, in the beowulf tale i first heard (im danish, beowulf is part of our passed-on bed time stories, the story takes place in denmark ^^) grendel AND the mother were hidious trolls who lived in a swamp :P like it better this way though.

I never really understood why she came back to see Wiglaf. Did she expect him to do the same as Beowulf or to gloat at another dead king? Please clear this up for me.

I'm not sure either. The way Wiglaf begins to walk into the water kinda displays as though she still has a hypnotic power about her, but the fact that he stops tells me that maybe Wiglaf can see a pattern emerging here.

I really hope Wiglaf kills that witch, to be honest... He was always the coolest.

@TheBeowulf2007 the real story of beowulf was that he killed grendels mother returned home became king of the geats. Eventually a peasant found the dragon horn and brought it to beowulf as a gift which enraged the dragon causing it to attack...which was a very poor choice cuz it died attacking an old man :P the story changes were only for the movie to add a more in depth story and add a fatal flaw to beowulf otherwise it would just be a movie of him murdering all the things
