In light of Whitney Houston's passing, it's great to see a class act like Dolly Parton sing her own song and explain why she wrote it for Porter Wagoner.
Simply amazing, both the history behind the song and Dolly's beautiful vocals. Her love for Porter shines through when she sings to him, what a performance by a true legend.
My sister and my grandmother saw dolly perform in Davenport Iowa at the Palmer auditorium back in the day. I have always loved her music and enjoyed watching her TV show.
Thumbs up and a big LIKE. Wish they had a LOVE button
Does anybody know who originally sang this? Both Ms Housten & Ms Parton sing this with so much feeling, soul & passion, but Ms Parton sings it with a sense of personal rememberance. Don't you find?
@stanfrymann I was so busy waiting for Dolly to sing that I, selfishly, ignored the intro. But, thanks a lot especially for the "story behind it" tipp (which I'm gonna look into right now)! Cheers.
Incredible. Dolly is a true entertainer, and when she sang this to Porter after all those years you knew she still meant every word. She makes me proud to be from Tennessee. She never forgot grete roots and still contributes to her home town.
I hope this video and this memory lives on forever! Many, many greats at this time on this Opry stage! I have only one regret and that is: I wasn't there to witness this historical ocassion in person! If I knew this was one of the last times that Porter and Dolly would ever be together . . "I would have paid any price to have been there, also"!
When Porter left us, we certainly lost a part of country music history . . RIP, Porter
I meet Dolly parton and sang with her This video is so sweet. It made me cry a little bit cause now I know that the song really mean before I thought it will just a love song like everyone elce thought too but now that I know what it really means I thought that was sine i sweet Inda that Dolly parton did for Porter Wagoner when Dolly was leaveing the Porter Wagoner show. I always love Dolly I will always love Dolly parton

This is just unbelievable - big big love on display, no faking it,,,,one of those great musical partnerships Lennon-McCartney. George and Tammy, Conway and Loretta, Don and Phil....we had it all musically in the 20th century. Dolly is up there with Elvis in my books...there won't ever be another one!
I met Porter Wagoner one morning in Nashville about 5AM. He had his pickup truck and boat and was going fishing and stopped by Krystal for something to eat before heading out. A very genuine and kind man. I apologized for interrupting him, and his exact words were... "Don't apologize for that. I'd worry if nobody recognized me and the music lovers are who made me what I am in this business. I'm very blessed."
@Tampaparrotthead . . I do believe this entirely . . over forty years ago Porter would be fishing on Center Hill and I know first hand from friends of mine . . . they would run into him on the lake and he would treat them the same exact way . . so very genuine!
I find it so poignant how she said "I hope you've had all you ever dreamed of" instead of "I hope you had all you ever dream of". Porter died soon after.
My eyes fill With Tears, Knowing that Porter Died just a few months after this, you know dolly means every word of this. porter I Will Always Loive you, your Music.
This is definitely the most touching version of the song. When you think of all they've been through, and yet, Dolly can still stand there, sing the song, and mean it with all her heart. Absolutely Beautiful.
I cryed , such a touching moment.

Dedicated to Whitney Houston:
by John Wayne Storrs
All songs are sad today All songs are hymns
With rhymes and chimes
Stars came together for one
They heard their voices, But the best was not there
Even the echoes
Of the missing voice Was still the best of all

@TheDjinn2 Dolly penned the son and had a E#1 hit with it 2 times before Whitney did it.
