@rbain007 I think it's still being used as part of the area music at California Adventure in the Condor Flats area also. Lots of good soundtrack music played in that area of the park.
This is easily one of THE BEST film scores James Horner has ever done. Its right up there with "Field of Dreams" in my opinion. The Blu-Ray hits December 13th! :)
You can hear the family resemblance between this cue and "Leaving Port" from Titanic. Both are looking to evoke that unmistakable "spirit of adventure".
you know what I am saying. Fight for your right to freedom of speech .As in Communist China they force you to be subordinate to the Communist Party and the their economic espionage unit the MSS. In the US we are free to be.
@ConcreteSurfer420 It's amazing how Disney just refuses to put a good dvd/blu ray out for this. The only time this movie was out on dvd was in the very early days of the format, and was a direct port of the Laser Disc edition. I can understand their reservations, since the movie was a flop in 1991, but since then it's become a cult movie, and with Captain America out, you'd think Disney would like to take advantage of that. Maybe they'll release something when Captain America comes out on Blu?
The Rocketeer's theme just reminds you that Dreams are powerful things that truly can come true. That in the dark world that is reality, there are sparks of good and happiness. That there is still adventure out there, and you just have to find it. Nothing is impossible.
@RikiOhRed This movie makes me think of the golden age of avation when dreems where possible and all it took was courage, an adventurous spirit and a bit of luck. People were just better back in those days.
Why isn't Horner scoring Captain America? I love Silvestri and his Back to the Future score is one of my all time favorites but Horner just seemed so right for it.
The Rocketeer was truly a portrait of America. Everything is in it from the humble pilot (where flight is a symbol of our freedom), to W.C. Fields, to our patriots, and our quest for freedom.
@Evolution7X First of all I'm in my 20's, second of all it completely is a rip, and thirdly I never dissed him for using a theme from Rachmaninoff. I just said it is a rip, never judged.
@milamberMR It doesn't really sound that close, there's a few parts where it might sound similar but not really. I'm listening to it now as I type and I don't hear anything that suggests it was ripped off.
@milamberMR It's specifically the Horn solo in the second movement. That same melody appears elsewhere but that's the easiest place to hear it. It's even in the same key if I remember right (this is something I looked into years ago when I played this theme song for an event). It's the same notes, very similar rhythm. Just the descending half is a little different, but still quite similar
@milamberMR I've noticed that listening to my Rachmaninoff CD. But I figure, if you're going to imitate someone, it might as well be a master. It's similar to how John Williams borrowed Gustav's theme for Mars Bringer of War when he composed for Star Wars. It works.

I read that their were two more sequels planned, but this movie got mixed reviews (not that anyone should really care about critics and their opinions) and it just didn't work out. That really sucks! I would've LOVED to see two more Rocketeer movies!
@RageTreb Well, it's been a good twenty years now...perhaps in 2016 they'll announce a remake on its 25th anniversary.
Perhaps they figure that Iron Man's flying scenes have made the Rocketeer's look quaint and therefore uninteresting. Or perhaps the fan base is just too small to make another film commercially viable.
Brilliant and timeless. I would rank this score with that of Star Wars or Raiders, or very near them.
This music could be the theme of a western, a football movie, a caped superhero adventure; you name it. It just has that stirring, idealistic, "hold-onto-your-butt-here-we-go" feel to it.
Whatever they paid James Horner for this, it wasn't enough. :)
@1king4all Trouble with this movie was it was "sort of" like Iron Man, but without much action. And when he did get up into the air (rare) he didn't do much due to the fact that he didn't have anything except the rocket pack. No weapons, no nothing. He just flew around, lost power, then flew around again. Best thing about this movie was his girl.
this movie was so great. most childhood movies i go back and watch over now arent too impressive but this one is still exciting. 10/10. even the video game for the new was great
I love this. End of anyone's story. If you don't dig this song, than I'm sorry you can't believe in life itself or what is has to offer. Simply incredible. This song helped me along my 13 years of struggle with Diabetes so far. I was diagnosed at age 9, and have been healthy since then. This song has been played in my head since I have seen the doctor has told me that I am going to live.... and the first time I have heard outside my head since. Amazing!
This theme song makes me cry... as a 22 old man.... it holds a special place in my emotions like nothing else. Holy shit does it ever remind me of the DREAM of flight in our morality (figuratively speaking)
This movie was so much fun but then so was the original King of the Rocketman which my Grandfather made in 1949 - even the special effects were decent for the era, but it didn't have James Horner's music, one of his best scores.
This was the first movie I can actually remember seeing in a theater. My mom and I saw it shortly after it came out. Since then, that part of the city has gone from being the hustling-and-bustling section side to the poor side of town. The movie theater was closed down years ago, and it's been up for sale since. Whenever I drive by, a small wound opens up in my heart.
Occasionally, I'll sit and watch The Rocketeer. Then I turn into kid sitting in the theater with my mom. And everything is okay.
@jakebreaker "...a small wound opens up in my heart."--a very well-said and eloquent expression of mourning for happier times and golden days, long gone.
@jakebreaker this literally was the first movie I saw in a theatre. My parents kept the big retro ticket. From when I was 2. Awesome movie, no major issues. Fun and exciting. :)
The great thing about the Rocketeer is that he has no powers, just a man/his friend and a kick ass rocket pack built by none other then Howard Hugues :)

That just shows how powerful music can be. composers are so important in films....now they are not what they should be. they should take a lesson from james horner and john williams. elliot goldenthal......I'm a little tipsy. Any way I AM the principal tubist of the Bakersfield symphony Orchestra. It WAS narrated by leonard nemoy that concert and he was a little stand offish in person. But hey...it's cool.
this piece has an awesome tuba solo... I played it with the Bakersfield Symphony Orchestra narrated by leonard nemoy. so FACE. Besides James Horner is the best...or one of ten best. Danny Elfman, Jerry Goldsmith, Elliot Goldsmith, John Williams and Plargh being the other 9. Anyway....it has a great tuba solo trust me.
i still remeber seeing this in theatres this was the first and only time i ever saw an audience applaud a film in my life . everything about this movie worked characters-actors-soundtrack all just went together so well.
But this theme takes so long to Develop...and it doesnt at all protray the fantastic Flight of the Rocketeer...it just kind of halfassed soars to the imagery.
"We're not on a plane in the sky climbing over scenery, where JETTING Through the sky, as the ROcketeer" the sound could've should've gotten to that part quicker at least.
Listned to this last year, What a great movie it was, 90's a great time introducing late 30's movies even more greatly..I just love the sound track :D Dont know what else to say but SIMPLY GREAT!
The Rocketeer soundtrack is a pilfered mishmash reworking of the Star Trek II Wrath of Khan soundtrack, which Horner also wrote. The main theme of this movie can also be heard in the video game ULTIMATE RIDE DISNEY COASTER and as a water show at the FOUNTAIN OF NATIONS at EPCOT Center.
This movie is exactly what it is, which is what makes it so great. It is a classic action movie from a time long ago. Sure it is a little corney at times, but it was supposed to be. It made you feel like you were watching one of the old Buck Rogers films in the 30's and job well done, but better. This movie had everything, the hero, the old man, the girl, the villans, the good guys but were getting in the way of the hero. Classic story telling, and the reason we go to the movies.
@xAZAxSyndrom This was an updated version of Rocketman- a hero used for black and white films that had him fighting aliens and robots. That guy had a control box with button turners on his chest that he used to decide for the directions his rocket would be travelling. The difference with the Rocketeer is that he had a handheld button to fire up the jet engines on the pack. He also was used to fight realistic bad guys possibly to keep this from seeming like a comic book so it would be serious.
@xAZAxSyndrom If you are referring to the original Rocketman- I myself have never actually seen the movies. I just watched a few videos showing scenes from them on this website and read about them on the Wikipedia. The Rocketeer was the one I was saying was used to fight realistic bad guys as you saw in the movie all he fought were the gangsters and the Nazis. Rocketman was actually fighting fictional types of villains like I said such as aliens and robots. His movies were made back in the '50s.
@xAZAxSyndrom I just think of them as a few of those really old films that look like crap for today's standards- but they actually tell a good story unlike today where films are basically crap just showing off action and special effects. That is why remakes always suck and the original versions are always so much better. Remakes can sometimes do an okay enough job- but they are still outdone by the original. Again- I have not actually seen those old movies and was just saying they inspired this.
@JLC31383 You watch a certain type of movies that only "show off effects and action" There are many types of movies, Besides i'm not talking about the effects i'm talking about the story and picture quality.
@ethanhopkin14 Well said...they don't make em' like they used to. Although Joe Johnston, it's director is making Captain America at the moment. Good choice I reckon.
Back in 1991, a local news program in Chicago played highlights of the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds flight demonstration team to this theme music - perfect!
It had some tough competition that summer. T2 as well Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves were both highly marketed and stole much of the business. Thelma and Louise was the sleeper hit of that summer as well, and Boyz n the Hood was the critical darling. Rocketeer got lost in the mix. Also, Disney did a piss-poor job of selling the film. They wouldn't give the director the budget needed to film some big action scenes. There was supposed to be a huge chase through Hollywood that was never filmed.
It's very underrated and extremely underappreciated. But I think it was released around the same time as Terminator 2 Judgement Day, so it lost the battle of the bucks. I do enjoy this film though. It's back when Dysney could actually make live action movies. I miss those days.
The FBI never had a second rocketpack, what they got in the beginning of the movie was a vacuum cleaner. In the SNES game, Peabody made a new rocketpack which was faster than the first one (if you remember at the end of the film, he started brainstorming ideas to improve the rocket, clearly showing their intentions to build a new rocket.)
@vertigo1061 - I think @cutie means the late, great Dave Stevens, the cartoonist and true creator of The Rocketeer.

this piece has an awesome tuba solo...

Please God, I don't want to see a remake of this.

GREAT MOVIE. Great Story/Concept

The Rocketeer soundtrack is a pilfered mishmash reworking of the Star Trek II Wrath of Khan soundtrack, which Horner also wrote. The main theme of this movie can also be heard in the video game ULTIMATE RIDE DISNEY COASTER and as a water show at the FOUNTAIN OF NATIONS at EPCOT Center.
hmghosthost 1 year ago
@hmghosthost You've got a point. Horner's used it a few times since, as well.

JLC31383 1 year ago
@JLC31383 Sounds like very lame and boring.
xAZAxSyndrom 1 year ago
@xAZAxSyndrom If you are referring to the original Rocketman- I myself have never actually seen the movies. I just watched a few videos showing scenes from them on this website and read about them on the Wikipedia. The Rocketeer was the one I was saying was used to fight realistic bad guys as you saw in the movie all he fought were the gangsters and the Nazis. Rocketman was actually fighting fictional types of villains like I said such as aliens and robots. His movies were made back in the '50s.
JLC31383 1 year ago
@JLC31383 Awesome, Why do you tell me everything that you read about him? All i said that this movie sound boring and lame .. :X
xAZAxSyndrom 1 year ago
@xAZAxSyndrom I just think of them as a few of those really old films that look like crap for today's standards- but they actually tell a good story unlike today where films are basically crap just showing off action and special effects. That is why remakes always suck and the original versions are always so much better. Remakes can sometimes do an okay enough job- but they are still outdone by the original. Again- I have not actually seen those old movies and was just saying they inspired this.
JLC31383 1 year ago
@JLC31383 You watch a certain type of movies that only "show off effects and action" There are many types of movies, Besides i'm not talking about the effects i'm talking about the story and picture quality.

@ethanhopkin14 Well said...they don't make em' like they used to. Although Joe Johnston, it's director is making Captain America at the moment. Good choice I reckon.

If you love film music but haven't yet discovered
the scores of Erich Wolfgang Korngold, you
can find several samples here on Youtube.
He wrote mainly for Warner Brothers in the
30s and 40s. His main title for Kings Row is
the same as the opening theme of Star
Wars. George Lucas is said to have told
John Williams he wanted that kind of music.
The Rocketeer is my favorite Horner score.
Tx for the post.

It is generally considered an under appreciated jewel today, having been overlooked in 1991. Not sure why it didn't do so well.
