@MySecretWeapon77 Depends on what century. In 1066 knights would have only a mail hauberk & conical helmet for protection. By 1120 they had full body mail and barrel-shaped helmets. By around 1250 they started adding plates to the insides of surcoats (coat of plates or brigandine), in the 1300s they started using some plates on the body. It was not until after 1400 that knights had full plate.
ok one thing people dont take into account is the average japanese samurai was about 5'2" tall the average euro warrior/night was about 5'10 to 6'0" tall giving him a reach advantage about roughly 10 inches easy and considering the long sword was ment to pierce armor and is a stabbing weapon the katana and the shorter samurai would most likely loose unless the balance of skill was greatly in his favor. also the plate the knight would ware is far better than the wood and leather of the samurai.
@jackedupjimmy Reasonable point about the size difference, and longswords were significantly longer than katana as well.
Although you should know that samurai armour was not typically made of wood, and leather was not the preferred material. Most samurai seemed to favour iron or steel armour, similar to the knight. There were more gaps in samurai armour, but the protection value would be similar.
@stevecoldsteve you cant cut through metal is all im saying, plus european swords are damn fast when used right, there are more than a few longsword videos on youtube that can show how lightning fast a skilled person can be.
After reading some of the comments it seems we have more Knight fans than samurai, generally the knights armor are thicker and heavier which makes them slower and open to counters and swift attacks, but because of their heavy armor they will be able to withstand some of the blows...some
@volarion I know. That knights is though. I admit he had some sweet tricks, but the samurai fucked around to much. Iaidojutsu could have cut his head off in .6 seconds.
Yeah, sport fencing is pretty linear. The good fencing is when guys with two-handed swords get wrecked with a few flourishes and a fast fleche. I like that kind of fencing... infact, i'm going to make a badass fencer in my book.
A Small, Almost Feminin, jap, Covert with cloth& Bamboo, Against a Muscular, Stonger, Heavy Blade wielding, METAL ARMOUR Bearing Knight.? And Wins..?.. .. In What kinda reality would This Happen.? @Einherjar212 The popular notion that knights were less skilled and had heavier gear while being more powerful emerges of movies, bad stage fighting and the belief that everything japanese is inherently more sophisticated. I'm not saying it's your claim, but it's where this misconceptions come from. Reality is different, e.g. knightly armour had around the same weight than what Samurai had, the sword had a lighter weight/inch ratio a.s.o. Here some historical techniques:
@TheWootLee Not how a Knight would fight either, in reality he stands just as good a chance as the samurai (probably better considering relative equipment). The whole Samurai > Everything concept is WW2 propaganda, with as little grounding in reality as the WW2 racial propaganda from Japan's allies - the NSDAP.
30 seconds in the fight and the samauri's sword is FUCKED completly and utterly FUCKED even if he does manage to hit an unarmoured spot it wont even break a bone

I like the part where the samurai doesn't know how to fight.... like.. it's not there way to fight.. it's there way to Dodge and cut in 1 movement.. to kill there opponent in 1 go
@Balfourism Volarion is right; This 1 go one kill by dodging is very impresive in movies or stagefighting but it's very dangerous in reality:
1) Dodging only works against a straight downward cut. Why would anyone not use diagonal strikes?
2) The opponent can only be hit if he continues to attack as if he hadn't noticed you're dodging - which is the way stagefighting choreography works but not real sparring.
3) The attack can be a feint, to make you dodge so you run into the real strike.
whoever made this doesnt know how chain mail works, it was made to STOP slashes(hes clearly wearing it) thus the hit wouldnt do anything, and a slash with no stance means it has almost no power since you dont have any leverage, and is weilding it in his wrong hand meaning it would be weaker, and both fighters are wearing wrong gear, both are not wearing helmets at all, and the samuri has some anime uneffective stance
@shanielbot Of course it fazes him. Armor doesn't protect you from force. It protects you from being cut. If you push or punch him, he might not be injured, but he is still subject to the transfer of energy. Bullet proof vests prevent bullets from entering the body, but they can't neutralize the impact. The warrior is still "fazed." Thanks for watching.
@WarriorShowdown good point, but the sword wouldnt have enough energy to faze someone, the mail armour would help a tiny bit but considering the samurai was only using one hand to weild his weapon he could not generate enough force to faze someone like that, besides it was a cut across the body, not particulary powerfull
The katana is a relatively light weapon, so I don't think it'd do that, especially a one handed swing from an unstable stance on his knees! I'm guessing this video was made for entertainment purposes rather than historical accuracy anyway, awesome video! :D
If we were to look at it realistically, with a fully armored knight in plate, riveted mail or some combination, the knight would definitely win, they're just too hard to injure through all that armor :(
@WarriorShowdown The medieval maile and plate armor was specifically designed to stop cuts and blows, they could withstand the power of some light maces or greatswords.
What starts with c and ends with rap? Well, it's this "warrior showdown". Samurais are more swift and agile, and they can better wield their katana because they start everyday training since their early childhood. In samurai era, they were considered as demons. They could cut a human head off in a split second by unsheathing katana. Read some literature.
@Railstarfish 2 - Somehow i didn't hear anywhere that knights were great with bows and swords, plus they could ride a horse very well at the same time. Also their discipline was very hard. Where did you read, that they had such training?
4 - Not literature, but people who had to fight against them, survivors. And you know, everybody had boats. In sixteenth century everyone traveled and there were always fights for the land.
Read the book called Shogun. There are two tomes.
@TheEvalot 2 - I never said anything about bows. For the rest, look at the Talhoffer manuscripts, Fiore dei Liberi's Flower of Battle, read up on the intensity of training described by Jean le Maingre, or Regimento by Dom Duarte.
Did you really expect a feudal warrior elite to not be good at swords or horsemanship?
4 - How do we know what these survivors said? What evidence did they leave behind?
I searched for the book Shogun, all I found was a fiction novel.
@TheEvalot 2 - The term feudal warrior applies just as much to a samurai as it does to a knight. Also, look at the many sources I mentioned, the training regimens described by Jean le Maingre. Knightly education involved serving as a page and then a squire. Pells, behourds, quintains were common training resources in the middle ages.
4 - You earlier said "not literature." You are contradicting yourself.
Shogun volume 1 & 2 are fiction, by James Clavell? What author do your tomes have?
@TheEvalot The pell, the quintain, pages, squires, the fechtbucher and the tourneys or hastiludes of medieval Europe all point towards feudal warriors having structured training. I am not sure why you expect me to dismiss all this evidence to conform with what is essentially unfounded prejudice.
You asked me to find the book Shogun, in 2 tomes - I did and it was under fiction, can you help me find this *other* book called Shogun that comes in 2 tomes?
@TheEvalot knight were very disciplined there were indeed different styles of combat/martial arts for knights, theres even schools that teach those ancient styles today (like A.R.M.A)
For the rest of your comment I agree about that samurais can wield a katana better, but only because they where the only ones that used that specific sword.
@TheEvalot It's a lot harder to cut the head off your opponent when they're trying to cut your head off too. Knights started training in early childhood too, so I'm not sure what point you are trying to make.
@TheEvalot And what knight didn't train daily with sword from his childhood? All members of the noble, be it a son of a samurai or a knight, trained their whole life. A fight like this would simply be a matter of which individual was better in his own art of combat. Both weapons have the ability to slice through unarmored man with single cut.
It would be a very close battle in reality. Samurai and Knights were basically the same thing. Both were feudal land owners, both were skilled professional warriors, both followed some form of behavioral code, and both were armed with highly effective weapons and armor. I think the Samurai gets a bit of bias today through due to their image in western culture as a honorable warrior of the far east and the fact they persisted far longer than their European equivalents.
@twentius777 Avoiding a parry in real fights (if you can get out of the way instead) is always a good idea, but you wouldn't have to worry about a katana (or most traditionally forged steel weapons) breaking. They're strong and flexible.
@WarriorShowdown Ummm... just a little addition to the debate. I'm with twentius here. I have killed a katana with my longsword. It did not break but it was bent like hell after a few parries. and we are not taling about a cheap katana hear!
@WarriorShowdown Having a katana (not trying to argue or nothing), I would say that yes, the katana is strong, but i dont think it's strong enough to Ice-block (fully block) a heavy sword. Shinkendo teaches that the best defense is not being in the sword's trajectory (you don't say). Their defense is based on avoiding but letting his katana in the way so if he anticipated your move, the katana would block it. It damages the sword though if you block with the sharp side.
The thing is that there are not that many heavy swords out there. Even really large zweihanders are rarely over 3 kg. But I agree that a static block would be a bad thing anyway.
@gurkfisk89 Indeed, there wasn't that many heavy sword wielder out there, only the specially trained one were using those. Like the No Dachi. Still, I was answering according to circumstances ( he talked about heavy swords)
A katana can withstand a sword blow technically, but yes, it will only result in a bad thing :P
@FrogmortonHotchkiss i think people want a bit of accuracy even though it isnt stated in the video, though im not bashing the video even i would habe prefered a different kill strike, cant cut chainmaille
@volarion I guess it just doesn't play well. The chainmail hit isn't supposed to look like it cuts him. It's only an impact to stun. The kill shot is to the bare neck.
Good lord, look at all the hate - for what!? This might not have been what you were hoping for, but it's still good, you crazy fucks! Not just anyone could've made it! I mean, it's been carefully and skilfully done!
@FrogmortonHotchkiss Thanks! It's so easy to criticize that it doesn't bother me. No matter what people think they know, unless they work in stunts, they have no idea what goes into making a simple project like this. I'm so proud of the dedication and hard work of my students. Thanks for the support!
Ohh please people, shut the hell up! You can't be here looking for a "perfect historical reproduction" of real fight, with real soldiers, each one originating from the correct geographical location. Please, they are trying to entertein us, not to teach us how the fight would reallt ended, or rather whether it is pure fantasy or reality. WarriorsShowdown, man, people can't live without judging!
@imrhail20 Absolutely! But i think more and more people have knowlegde about historical fighting and have enough of the bulls*** from Hollywood. So since Warriorshowdown IS entertaining and would have had the ability to make an entertaining AND historical looking fight, i feel it's a compliment that some are discussing about it... And - Warriorshowdown is listening and has already changed some few things ;-)
wow people who cares about their ethnicity or w.e you people are bitching about it just people doing their own thing id rather people do this in a friendly way (I.E making these types of videos) then some real psycho out actually killing people so why don't you guys give them a break
@WarriorShowdown genghis khan, and of course the one who probably looks like you the evil saddam hussein insane. well good bye for now until i meet you with my hand and a half sword ready and a shotgun blast to your face for good luck.
@WarriorShowdown Greetings there, fuck u fuck u fuck U saddam hussein wannabe, you egotistical self caring pig bitch son- im talkin to u the main man behind this "show" I hope you get a Landsknechts zweihander great sword shoved halfway up ur ass, thats about 3 1/2 feet, and get to pull it out ur self and i hope you get the chance to burn in hell for a while to meet some people you have something in common with, the leader of the Ossuary, Julius caesar, caligula, hitler,
A samurai would completely and utterly destroy a knight. Their weapons are faster, their armour is lighter whilst being just as effective and they are better trained.
@daspoooop The Samurai armour was in fact quite heavy due to the overlapping layers of steel, and they don't cover the user as well e.g iniside of the limbs. As for better training, could you make a comparison between Kenjutsu and HEMA, like say, the techniques of Liechtenauer or Fiore dei Liberi? I'm curious where do you think the Samurai has better training in swordsmanship...
PS: Not saying knights are better or worse, i just feel that, no offense intended, you've got no clue :-P
@Railriderchris ok, are you finished trying to sound smart? OK good, a samurai is regular infantry, pit him against a regular medieval soldier.. see my point? Of course you said a trained nobleman like a knight right? Ok so an officer, pit an officer against a master samurai and i think it would be more of a fight however one side (samurai) devotes their entire life to mastering their weapon, and a knight is more of an aristocrat getting drunk engaging in orgies.
@daspoooop Samurai is not regular infantry. They were the elite trained warrior-caste of feudal Japan. The Japanese regular infantry was ashigaru.
Getting drunk engaging in orgies was actually more samurai behaviour. Visiting geisha was acceptable in Japan, while anything remotely like an orgy would be strongly condemned in Christendom.
Knights began their training in combat as pages from childhood, and trained extensively. Read up on Jean Le Maingre for examples of knightly training
@daspoooop Yeah, so apparently you really have no clue since you don't want to discuss our earlier topic but rather try to find more ''facts'' to make your favorite warrior look good... I think Railstarfish made the point. Let's add that once Japan was unified under the Tokugawas the Samurai where more of a bureaucratic elite, battles became rare.
The Samurai were very good warriors though. It's just silly to believe they were inherently better than other cultures.
@daspoooop All of that is false, sorry. Katana weigh about as much as a regular arming sword, samurai o-yoroi is 65 lbs or yukinoshita-do is 55 lbs, compared with average weight of a knight's plate was 57 lbs. Where do you get your information on training from? The fight manuals of medieval combat instructors like Talhoffer or Fiore dei Liberi show techniques easily as advanced as anything used in Japan.
sorry knights are way better then the samurai look at deadliest warrior statistics on the weapons freaking steel on steel it just comes down to skill and honor knight all the way.

@timwest27 Actually the armour weight was similar.
15th century full plate armour had an average weight of 57 lbs (Knight & the Blast Furnace).
Samurai o-yoroi had an average weight of 65 lbs (wakashira website).
Samurai Yukinoshita-do weighed around 50-55 lbs (Sengoku era reproductions, htt*p://ww*w.japanese-armor.co*m/japanese-armor.sh*tml - remove stars).

I think the Samurai are more skilled, and have sharper weapons. They are trained to end fights in a single blow it seems.
But Knights have stronger armor, more force to their weapons (which can be used with either side) and fought in more, and more brutal wars.
It's not about who's better. It's more agility and precison vs stamina and resilience.

Did you really expect a feudal warrior elite to not be good at swords or horsemanship?
4 - How do we know what these survivors said? What evidence did they leave behind?
I searched for the book Shogun, all I found was a fiction novel.
Railstarfish 3 weeks ago
@Railstarfish 2 - Feudal warrior never had such discipline.
4 - You know the thing called as documents or literature? Have you heard of such thing as "talking" and "writing down"?
Then look harder. Maybe in Lithuanian language the title differs but I doubt it.
TheEvalot 3 weeks ago
@TheEvalot if by feudal warriors you mean knights then your wrong, they where extremely well disciplined
volarion 3 weeks ago
@TheEvalot 2 - The term feudal warrior applies just as much to a samurai as it does to a knight. Also, look at the many sources I mentioned, the training regimens described by Jean le Maingre. Knightly education involved serving as a page and then a squire. Pells, behourds, quintains were common training resources in the middle ages.
4 - You earlier said "not literature." You are contradicting yourself.
Shogun volume 1 & 2 are fiction, by James Clavell? What author do your tomes have?
Railstarfish 2 weeks ago
@TheEvalot The pell, the quintain, pages, squires, the fechtbucher and the tourneys or hastiludes of medieval Europe all point towards feudal warriors having structured training. I am not sure why you expect me to dismiss all this evidence to conform with what is essentially unfounded prejudice.
You asked me to find the book Shogun, in 2 tomes - I did and it was under fiction, can you help me find this *other* book called Shogun that comes in 2 tomes?
Railstarfish 2 weeks ago
@TheEvalot knight were very disciplined there were indeed different styles of combat/martial arts for knights, theres even schools that teach those ancient styles today (like A.R.M.A)

Claptrap
For the rest of your comment I agree about that samurais can wield a katana better, but only because they where the only ones that used that specific sword.
gurkfisk89 3 weeks ago
@TheEvalot It's a lot harder to cut the head off your opponent when they're trying to cut your head off too. Knights started training in early childhood too, so I'm not sure what point you are trying to make.
WarriorShowdown 3 weeks ago
@TheEvalot I'm too busy having fun making fights to read literature. I'll just keep posting my crap and leave the sword fighting expertise to you ;)
WarriorShowdown 2 weeks ago
@TheEvalot And what knight didn't train daily with sword from his childhood? All members of the noble, be it a son of a samurai or a knight, trained their whole life. A fight like this would simply be a matter of which individual was better in his own art of combat. Both weapons have the ability to slice through unarmored man with single cut.
Sassabian 2 weeks ago
That "samurai" can´t draw his sword right, and his "style" and "techniqes" are bullshit.
Its a stupid, not swordsman :///
Banzai96 3 weeks ago
It would be a very close battle in reality. Samurai and Knights were basically the same thing. Both were feudal land owners, both were skilled professional warriors, both followed some form of behavioral code, and both were armed with highly effective weapons and armor. I think the Samurai gets a bit of bias today through due to their image in western culture as a honorable warrior of the far east and the fact they persisted far longer than their European equivalents.
KrazyKommieKiller 3 weeks ago
@twentius777 also european swords generally weigh about the same amount as katana do and they feel lighter because most are more hilt balanced
volarion 4 weeks ago
katana could break in contact with heavy sword so it should not be used extensively in parrying.
twentius777 4 weeks ago
@twentius777 Avoiding a parry in real fights (if you can get out of the way instead) is always a good idea, but you wouldn't have to worry about a katana (or most traditionally forged steel weapons) breaking. They're strong and flexible.
WarriorShowdown 4 weeks ago
@WarriorShowdown Ummm... just a little addition to the debate. I'm with twentius here. I have killed a katana with my longsword. It did not break but it was bent like hell after a few parries. and we are not taling about a cheap katana hear!
Qhorim 3 weeks ago
@WarriorShowdown Having a katana (not trying to argue or nothing), I would say that yes, the katana is strong, but i dont think it's strong enough to Ice-block (fully block) a heavy sword. Shinkendo teaches that the best defense is not being in the sword's trajectory (you don't say). Their defense is based on avoiding but letting his katana in the way so if he anticipated your move, the katana would block it. It damages the sword though if you block with the sharp side.
GabCormier 3 weeks ago
@GabCormier
The thing is that there are not that many heavy swords out there. Even really large zweihanders are rarely over 3 kg. But I agree that a static block would be a bad thing anyway.
gurkfisk89 3 weeks ago
@gurkfisk89 Indeed, there wasn't that many heavy sword wielder out there, only the specially trained one were using those. Like the No Dachi. Still, I was answering according to circumstances ( he talked about heavy swords)
A katana can withstand a sword blow technically, but yes, it will only result in a bad thing :P

@FrogmortonHotchkiss i think people want a bit of accuracy even though it isnt stated in the video, though im not bashing the video even i would habe prefered a different kill strike, cant cut chainmaille
volarion 4 weeks ago
@volarion I guess it just doesn't play well. The chainmail hit isn't supposed to look like it cuts him. It's only an impact to stun. The kill shot is to the bare neck.

@FrogmortonHotchkiss Thanks! It's so easy to criticize that it doesn't bother me.
PS: sorry for bad English! ;)
imrhail20 1 month ago
@imrhail20 Absolutely! But i think more and more people have knowlegde about historical fighting and have enough of the bulls*** from Hollywood. So since Warriorshowdown IS entertaining and would have had the ability to make an entertaining AND historical looking fight, i feel it's a compliment that some are discussing about it... And - Warriorshowdown is listening and has already changed some few things ;-)

A samurai would completely and utterly destroy a knight. Their weapons are faster, their armour is lighter whilst being just as effective and they are better trained.
daspoooop 1 month ago
@daspoooop The Samurai armour was in fact quite heavy due to the overlapping layers of steel, and they don't cover the user as well e.g iniside of the limbs. As for better training, could you make a comparison between Kenjutsu and HEMA, like say, the techniques of Liechtenauer or Fiore dei Liberi? I'm curious where do you think the Samurai has better training in swordsmanship...
PS: Not saying knights are better or worse, i just feel that, no offense intended, you've got no clue :-P
Railriderchris 1 month ago
@Railriderchris ok, are you finished trying to sound smart? OK good, a samurai is regular infantry, pit him against a regular medieval soldier.. see my point? Of course you said a trained nobleman like a knight right? Ok so an officer, pit an officer against a master samurai and i think it would be more of a fight however one side (samurai) devotes their entire life to mastering their weapon, and a knight is more of an aristocrat getting drunk engaging in orgies.
daspoooop 1 month ago
@daspoooop Samurai is not regular infantry. They were the elite trained warrior-caste of feudal Japan. The Japanese regular infantry was ashigaru.
Getting drunk engaging in orgies was actually more samurai behaviour. Visiting geisha was acceptable in Japan, while anything remotely like an orgy would be strongly condemned in Christendom.
Knights began their training in combat as pages from childhood, and trained extensively. Read up on Jean Le Maingre for examples of knightly training
Railstarfish 1 month ago
@Railriderchris Bottom line samurai are better trained and more effective than medieval regular infantry on basic soldier wages.
daspoooop 1 month ago
@daspoooop Yeah, so apparently you really have no clue since you don't want to discuss our earlier topic but rather try to find more ''facts'' to make your favorite warrior look good... I think Railstarfish made the point. Let's add that once Japan was unified under the Tokugawas the Samurai where more of a bureaucratic elite, battles became rare.
The Samurai were very good warriors though. It's just silly to believe they were inherently better than other cultures.
Railriderchris 1 month ago
@Railriderchris Hey there, my friend! How are you doing?
Railstarfish 4 weeks ago
@Railstarfish I'm doing great, thank you! :-)
Railriderchris 4 weeks ago
@daspoooop All of that is false, sorry. Katana weigh about as much as a regular arming sword, samurai o-yoroi is 65 lbs or yukinoshita-do is 55 lbs, compared with average weight of a knight's plate was 57 lbs. Where do you get your information on training from? The fight manuals of medieval combat instructors like Talhoffer or Fiore dei Liberi show techniques easily as advanced as anything used in Japan.
