So now I have the daunting task of making the decision to take it to a repair man to fix or just save up again and buy another one. It is out of warrranty and I had the tv for a little over 2 years and that seems to be the breaking point (pun intended) for this Set, between 1-2 years. And it is happening to a lot of Samsung TV's with different sizes and models. I know I definitely won't be buying another Samsung and I will get an extended warranty on my next Set. Lesson learned there.
I have the Exact same 40inch Series 5 Tv you do and about 6 months ago it started to do the very same thing that your TV is doing. I would unplug the TV from the outlet overnight and then plug it back in and turn it on and the Tv would have about a day and a half of continuous tv before it would happen again. It would only do it when I watched cable. Until last night when I was playing my PS3 the game I was playing the Screen Blacked out more than once and that has never happened to for that.

try to change the initial configuration.. when you turn on for the first time you must chose the STAND configuration or HOME configuration. (with the VOLUME BUTTON)
Read the initial manual. i hope for you that isn't a problem... or the best thing to do is to go at samsung assistant for warranty.... if you have it..

Bad capacitor in power supply or cathode fail (if led backlight then no). thats the problem in almost all LCD.

I faced same problem! No video, particularly if u plug to PC.
After many attempts by the technician and my self, we discovered it is overheating problem!
Try to put a small fan behind the TV... it will continue working with audio and video.
I think Samsung knows about it and they just deny this manufacturing bug.
