Here are some things you need to know about Bruce's interaction with Wally Jay. For one neither Bruce or Wally never have made mention they ever spared. Second, Bruce heard about Wally after Wally's Jude team had won a prestigious tournament. Bruce was impressed by how Wally had taken the the worst judo team in California and made them #1. Bruce wanted to know how he did it. So they struck up a fast friendship. Wally taught Bruce SCJ and he absorbed it into what is now JKD.
I am aware of Bruce Lee's relationship with Wally Jay. I have actually trained with professor Jay and he was amazing to learn from. I also think Bruce Lee was extra-ordinary.
i Guess I was just being sarcastic and having fun -
this is a tv show so thats obviously not bruce lee or willy jay. , so why people feel the need to say its not bruce or willy jay you have to be fuckig stupid not to know that. they not trying to be spot on its ment to be dramatic so there going to "change things"
@l2a3sterling Here is something to think about. Jeet Kune Do is not a style it is a set of theories for you to design your own personal fighting system. Furthermore, JKD has elements of Small Circle Jiujitsu in it. So one is not better than the other. Bruce would not have learned a system that he thought was unworthy. He thought very highly of SCJ and Wally Jay. So please do your homework before you proclaim something is better than the other.
Bruce Li more like it. I know it's a spelling thing, but this actor named himself Bruce Li, in which he said he hated to exploit the name in a later interview.
@chopsueykungfu Naw, not as his native language. Mandarin was spoken in the North. Bruce Lee grew up in Hong Kong where the vast majority of people speak Catonese.
@TheBaltimoreKnight ya it is available in english(or with subtitles maybe i forget) it's a movie about bruce lee's life called "the legend of bruce lee"
Entertaining? Yes. However, the true student of budo knows the difference and can appreciate things like this for the fun factor. Get over it, guys. =)) ROTFL
Also!! As it was told to me. Which may be right or wrong, but this clip is also way way off. Is that Bruce lee came to Prof. Wally Jays Dojo in Alameda California to Challenge the head of the dojo as was traditional. Wally Jay declined the challege but offered to share what he knew was was in the Hawaiian spirit of Ohana(family) and Cacua (sp? gift giving) Which then then shared with each other their arts. This chip is way off!!
@Danor78 Ohana and Kokua. Wally Jay based his Small Circle Jujitsu on Danzan Ryu Jujitsu and Ohana (family) and Kokua (mutaul assistance) are important in DZR.
Ya I agree with alot of you guys. There are alot of errors. Now I don't know much about wing chun or bruce lee's style of fighting But of Prof. Wally Jays style I do know alot about. He learned Danzan Ryu Jujitsu from Henry Seishiro Okazaki (18901951) in Hawaii. A system which Okazaki created and founded. Wally Jay then went on to create his own system, Small Circle Jujitsu, Based on Danzan Ryu. There is little to no techniques of either in this clip.
Hollywood will always have a problem depicting American innovators as non-caucasian. Wally Jay and Bruce Lee, like many others during that time, are still recognized as martial greats that have yet to be reproduced. Bruce was fast, but not fast enough to avoid a spiral fracture through the use of small circle joint manipulation and structure destabilization.
this is not accurate bruce lee spared wih wally jays son in his school.they were all freinds.wally jay said his son could not do anything wih bruce.he gave bruce alot of credit.
Bruce sparred with Leon Jay? I'm not even sure Leon had been born when Bruce & Wally were friends, but you can read what Wally thought of Bruce in Wally's comments in Bruce's first book, Chinese Gung Fu: The Philosophical Art of Self Defense. They were friends, they exchanged techniques, spent time trading info, etc., but certainly never fought eachother.
leon jay is 54.i remember reading this in a karate magazine.bruce lee died in 73 i dont see why it could not have happened,im sure it was freindly not like this stupid movie.
shit the real bruce lee was a lot faster and deadlier. his opponents did not even come close to his level. he never lost a single fight but in this movie he lost to that shit japanese guy wtf... you gotta be kidding me man.
Agreed. This 50 part TV show was made on a shoe string budget of only $7.5 million. There are errors galore. In one scene, Bruce Lee is on a Seattle street corner talking to a friend and behind them is an AppleBees, Michaels and Chipoles - all of which never existed before 1982.
Funny cause Professor Wally Jay was one of Bruce Lee's instructors. And he was from Hawaii.
