The Skyline is the real deal...I waited on it for over a year, then decided to cave in to the positive reviews...it really is the real deal. Thin, light, fast...can handle the tasks most people ask of their knife...not a thick blade, but who wanted to pry things with a folder? I certainly wouldnt...get a fixed blade if u need something that tough. I think the blade would be fine for tactical emergency defense. This knife rides with me instead of the Spyderco Endura for now...buy a Skyline.
just bought that knife today, found it on a fluke [goddamn country cant find here a normal knife] and I just love it! light weight, razor sharp. really nice!
Nutn, have you seen the Damascus steel version of the Skyline? Here in New Zealand, the local quality knife seller (yes, in the singular on purpose) doesn't have the standard Skyline, but only the special Damascus steel version. Which looks amazing, but is really expensive... (over USD $100 when converted from NZD). I wonder if it is a worthwhile spend. They'll probably become collectable, you think?
Good review as always, nutn'. I actually looked for this review after you mentioned the skyline in another (you were using it as a pointer i believe..?) and now i'm probably going to order me one of these in the next day or so. The buck 112, however, is still it's competitor for me. let me know if you have any opinions on them, and thanks so much for the reviews!
you need to watch mtv cribs and make a nutnfancy cribs vid and do the fast walks the slow dives and all the editing things they do for a joke vid, like your one ware you use the buba teeth to make fun of your critics. "ya it me nutenfancy and this is my crib yo, gotta show you my knife collection". comedy gold if done rite like your other joke vid that i still cant stop watching. : )
I watched your review on the Skyline, Nutn, and went out to Wally World to check one out. In about 35 seconds of hands on with this knife at the sporting goods counter, I bought it and brought her home. I have only two real complaints. I know that it's a flipper, but it sure is hard to get a bite on those thumb studs. Second, the pocket clip needs to be deeper and painted black to match the G10.( Probably being picky on the clip, coat of paint will fix it.) Great review! Go buy this knife!
has nutn noticed any rust on the blade. i know of some rumors of 14c28n steel rusting just from being in peoples pockets. now im scared to carry my brand new skyline.
i was thinking about getting an assisted opener and they were all sucking then i saw this knife and i tried it and i said screw assisted this is the shit so much easier and just as fast. the only thing tht sucks is the clip
This knife ROCKS! Forget its clipped on after an hour, brass bushings, LOVE THE BELLY on this knife, outta the box ITS A RAZOR! And its just the perfect size AND WEIGHT, thanks for the recommendation, Im riding a knife high right now, got enough firearms and accessories for the summer, lol! Totally great knife all around, and they mighta upgraded the steel, its now marked 14C28N, as opposed to the 13C28N.
awesome knife! got mine 2 weeks ago and i love it! great edge right out of the box. i love the clip. it actually stays in your pocket, lol. and this knife is so lightweight that you forget it's in your pocket. anyhow, great quality, definitely worth the $35. btw, i carry this knife along with the leatherman kick. will never leave home without either one. and before anyone gets on my back about the kick, i'll tell you that it was a gift, a very practical gift though. anyhow, great knife!
@CarolinaCountryGuy I would but I don't just want to review it, I want to EDC it too, plus I can't sharpen blades so getting it sharpened will cost just as much as a new knife in the end. Sorry
Hey Nutn I've ordered the skyline. But one thing I wonder is on the kershaw website, It says that the skyline come with 14C28 Sandvik Stainless steel (Apply to most of the kershaw knives) not the 13C26 Steel. So what do you think which one is better 14C28 Steel or 13C26 Steel ?
@marcusjanta both are decent, 14C28N is their new exclusive steel, kershaw is upgrading some knives to this steel for a limited time.
basically the difference is that 13C is more wear resistant and 14C is more corrosion resistant, overall I think they will perform the same in the real world but 14C having a speck of nitrogen will have a tiny bit more rust resistant.
Hey nutnfancy, I recentrly purchased a Kershaw 1660CKT Leek and LOVE the knife, only problem I have with the Leek is the extremely thin point on the blade. I was just wondering if the tip on the blade of the Skyline is the same way. The reason I ask is because I own a very old Kershaw 2420ST and was gonna send it to kershaw to replace some parts but its discontinued so they will replace it with a knife of equal value. Also looking at the Blackout 1560 and the Clash 1605. Any opinion?
I ended up buying a Skyline the other day due to this review. It's everything I have been looking for in an EDC blade, thanks nutnfancy! Great knife for anyone looking for a slim, light folder with a large 3" blade.
i dreamed of this knife, cause i want it that bad. im still a minor though -.- ive seen tons of kershaw, spyderco and much more companies but my fav knife overall is the skyline. i cant wait till im 18
As far as tactical/emergency self defense goes,it is actually pretty damn good.Blade thickness is just enough. What it does to a free hanging side if beef is just amazing for a knife of it's size and weight.Cuts deep, and is able to get between ribs easily. It just tore up the cow.Nuff said.
Why did you compare the Skyline to the M-16 and not the M-21? The blades are much more comparable IMO. BTW I just ordered a Skyline to replace my M-21as an EDC. I had to redo the edge on my M-21as well but not to the extreme that you did, I went with a multi bevel edge and found that worked best. And you forgot to mention it has a tip down carry option some of us like that. Good point on the clip I might cut and drill and switch to tip down so it sits lower. Good review overall.
Nutn - I mean what I am about to ask with all love and respect...Are you a little A.D.D.? I ask, because I am (I think) and I think that I can see your thought process and my thought process matching a lot of times haha. Just asking man. Thanks a ton for the review. I bought a kershaw blackout (on your review), and am going to buy this one. I love kershaw's line. I find they keep their blades REALLY well.
Actually, this Sandvik 13C26 steel 'stains' rather readily for a "stainless" steel.
The newer Sandvik 14C28N that Kershaw/KAI is using is much better in resisting staining (*ahem* rusting) than the steel used on these older Kershaws. And that is why they went with this newer steel. Thomas (from KAI) mentioned this on Bladeforums..
Nutn you really like this knife. I thought it looked like a pretty cool knife so I bought one. Review was spot on. Best everyday knife I have ever owned. Don't even know I have it with me. Very cool!!!
Skyline update: LOCK FAILED-- using it to pierce through an industrial paper bag to slice the top off. by no means was i exerting alot of pressure. i tried again to get it to fail holding it in different ways to make sure i wasnt hitting the liner by mistake, and sure enough it failed 3 more times. the only thing that saved my fingers was the " flipper fin" which simply pinched my index finger fat. weak lock, but the edge lasts forever, been using it multiple times daily for 8 weeks.
I purchased two of these- absolutely my favorite EDC thus far. A note to buyers that the G10 scale texture is semi-aggressive out of the box (at least both of mine were) and will have a more "softened", but still purposeful, texture after from deploying from pocket over time. Amazing knife for the money- great review nutn.
Went and picked up the Skyline today. It is one excellent little knife. I love the texture of the G10, it is probably the best grip of all my knives. The blade deploys fast enough for an edc knife, and the size is okay. I'm gonna leave the Tenacious at home tomorrow and carry the Skyline with my Barrage. I'll see how it goes. Love the reviews nutnfancy, keep em coming.
have owned a skyline in the past, aswell as SEVERAL kershaw leeks, i like the skyline it deploys plenty fast enough without being assisted, just had to mention my new skyline is manufactured in jan 09 aswell!!
does your blade kinda ride on the right side of the liner when closed? I find that a lot of kershaws do that, (which can sometimes scratch the blade) Not very good blade centering.
got it today, i love it...ive used a gerber evo tanto for edc and i didnt like it over time just too small, but still a decent edc knife..this blows it out the water, plus made in the USA! big plus!!, not damn china like the gerber..just wish the kershaw blade was a little thicker, but its okay! :D
p.s. my evo tantos blade chipped very easy.. lets see how my skyline keeps up.
As the saying goes a bad apple can ruin the bunch. This knife's bad apple is it's thumb stud. It's SO small it tore my thumb up! Shaving sharp, awesome blade shape and grind BUT (_I_) The thumb stud WILL tare your thumb up with multiple opens. Which sucks plus the "flipper" on the back doesn't work for crap. So, Nutn is right on with this knife. For 40 bucks you get what you pay for.
Hey Nutnfancy! Nice review, liked it very much. Check out the Kershaw Chill if you have the time, looks like a very promissing blade to me, just ordered one online.
just got mine at walmart $35 absolutely love it i havent bought alot of blades but thank you nutnfancy for helping me spend my money wisely totally happy with this blade love it love the reveiws really appreciate it keep up the good work!!!!
I bought one of these about a month ago, off of this review. I was very impressed with the looks, weight, shape, etc. After using it for the last month, I've been disappointed with the toughness of the steel. After some light duty use, cutting a burrito on a paper plate, cutting packing tape on a box and the like. I was surprised to see that the edge had dulled, and the tip had bent slightly. I feel that my Swiss Army Knife has a more durable blade. Has anyone else had this experience?
Just bought this puppy from Walmart too!! Handle is super grippy and the knife is very sharp and quickly deployable! My one complaint is I wish the pocket clip was longer... Picked this knife up to replace my 1550t black out (favorite EDC btw).. while I send it to kershaw to be sharpened and some warranty work.. Wish I had super small torx to change the clip position.. anyone know the size? Very happy so far!
I just picked one of these babies up at WalMart today. I usually hate WalMart, but as noted, this is made in the USA. This knife rocks! SUPER sharp out of the package. Handle is very "grippy". It's opens rather easily after playing with it for a while to loosen it up and get the form just right. Very lightweight. The clip is a little too tight, but we'll see if it breaks in. I highly recommend. Thanks, Nutn!
was in the traveling path of the blade and I cut myself. I learned a good lesson today - trust your liner lock, but don't trust it too much! just thought i would share the experience with you. I am a big fan! keep up all the good reviews and philosophy! long live the sheepdog
...but today when I was out side working I was using the side of the blade as a pusher to push this pin thing in and I am not quite sure what happened next, but I must have applied a little to much downward pressure and the liner lock failed. unfortunately for me, my finger ...
my skyline update: Hey nutn - I was the guy who received the kershaw skyline from my girlfriend for Christmas! Since then the skyline has been my edc blade and has stood up well to reasonable daily use. I have sharpened the blade once since taking it out of the box and the sharpening was only necessary because I was using the blade to cut some fiberglass insulation. my only complaint with the blade so far is the liner lock. out of the box the skyline's liner lock passed my initial tap test...
Just got my skyline from walmart 14c28n march 09 on the blade. Thumbstuds are USELESS can't even get it to open without using the flipper. stiff opening hopefully it will loosen up or if anyone knows how i can fix this problem tell me plz. Oh and the pocket clip is WAY to tight definatley mess up your pants pockets with it. 8 out of 10
Nutn, really love ur reviews, but 4 minutes has gone by now and u really havent given any info on the knife other than it doesnt have steel liners, lol. No offense, but if you could just get to the point, you would have time for more reviews.
Just received mine today. 14c28n steel and no date on flipper as well. Will have to get use to the flipper, seems as though I cannot make a "full" deploy each time. Is there a break-in period where it gets better with deployment? Super sharp edge right out of the box for sure!
i got one of these today, and its a different steel. its 14c28n. from what i have read it is basically the same but with more corrosion resistance? the knife also does not have a manufacture date on the flipper. does anyone else have this?
Just picked up one of these to replace my S&W Mini SWAT that has served me well for over 5 years. I'm happy with it so far. Time will tell how well it will hold up.
Picked one of these up upon your recommendation as I have many knives. This is the only one I was disappointed in. A light spine whack on the heel of my shoe caused the liner lock to fail over and over. I checked and it was fully engaged each time. It would also fail with a firm grip, index finger in choil. Be warned and please comment if you've had a similar experience. I returned it today for a Leek with the frame lock and it is superb.
I do not anticipate using the blade for heavy use or for tactical use, and for me the liner lock is fine in a very light knife. But it would not serve anyone well to turn it over and bang on it, as it will unlock. I also looked at the very popular leek, but it was a little too pointy to be useful to me and about 15 bucks more. You're right though.. this is not a knife you want to bang on.
I bought one of these also. The review is right on. I love it for a very lightweight high-value knife. What a deal. I paid 35 bucks total. Made in the USA. The clip kinda sucks-- very tight and will eat your pants unless you carefully modify it. No thumb gimping, but I don't miss it bc of the good ergonomics. And the thumbstuds are really for looks only-- no functionality at all--worthless from closed position. But the flawless flipper (fun) renders the thumb studs unnecessary. Nice.
I have to take exception to something here. We are NOT getting what we pay for on your reviews. I get innumerable volumes of information from your vids. Keep them coming, and thanks.
@Doomsday295 cant speak to the oso..but i have the skyline and it is an awesome blade....only drawback is if you have really large hands it might and stress might be a problem...but for me...medium size hands its perfect...good luck....kershaws are awesome blades you prolly wont go wrong with either
my lady just got me this knife as a christmas present and I must say I am really impressed. I am new to G10 but I am quickly becoming a fan - light weight and grip is good. I also am a fan of the Sandvik steel it has served me well so far! a great knife for $30!
Bought the knife a few days ago, then saw this video in my 'recommended' videos. Nice review, loads of information about the knife. I'm sitting here with my own skyline (ffffff I cut off a piece of my finger just now). anyway, I like the knife a lot. It will be a nice EDC, but the clip is WAY too tight. Anything I can do about that?
Hey nutnfancy i was jsut going to scour your log of knife reviews to find or ask what you think your best and or favortie everyday knife would be well i found it jsut saw the video and already order 2 of these keep up the good work!!!!!
Bought this knife per review. Poor blade center, thin blade. Sent it to Kershaw for repair, we'll see. Also, clip really tight and over torqued into factory position, tip down. Moved clip for tip up and scale damaged where Kershaw torqued it down. Also, flipper is useless for one-step opening if pivot screw tight enough to be safe, imo.
GREAT review! I had the original Pika II and was happy with it until I watched your Pika II review (Wish I watched your review prior to purchasing it.) LOL Well my Pika II pocket clip fell off and was lost. I needed an alternate EDC knife while I waited for a new clip so I picked up the Skyline (PHX, AZ Wal-Mart- $34.97) I love my Skyline- lighter, quicker acquisition, and SHARP! Thanks for the guidance T&P & Team.
hey nutnfancy theres a new kershaw knife called the "select fire". Many dealers have heard of it but my dad and I have a prototype. I love it and so does he. it is not assisted opening but it is still cool. it has 2 fold out compartments for screwdriver bits, and a fold out driver. My dad and me were at the warehouse sale in Tualatin and were talking to his friend Steve Michels who said he has met you several times and will be seeing you again at the Shot show in January.
Bought one today, sharp as all heck out of the box, minor cut on my thumb from playing with it. My fault. I was practicing the assist open and the close procedures. Very nice and this will be my only carry blade. Live, love, laugh!
Texas is where I live. Depending on where you live in the state you can take 2 bucks and 2 does or more. These were deer the other guys I hunt with took though. I haven't been able to personally connect yet! In South Carolina if I remember right you can take a deer every day. I think Georgia is the same as well. You can look up state laws to verifiy this.
just got the skyline recently at walmart for arount 38$ i skinned a deer last night with it, and it really suprised me, and turnd out to be excllent for slicing through flesh... i even took a hamer to the back of the knife several times, and its held its own.. very well .. i dont abuse knives, i jus use them for what i need them for, but most knives dont stand up like this one has to the punishment i happen to put knives through.
just got a Kershaw Skyline damascus folder, relay nice only thing i don't like is that in my country (New Zealand) prices are so high for knives guns and everything else nutn reviews. the skyline cost me $96 USD. Keep up the good reviews nutnfancy.
Just picked a Skyline up today from walmart. This thing is wicked sharp out of the box. Only thing Ive noticed so far is the the texture of the handle realy gripps your pocket when your trying to slide it in/out of your pocket. No comment yet as for EDC carry but it looks like it will server well.
I don't know what kind of knife I have, can some one tell me?
Its a multi colored one. I bought it, cause it matches my zippo spectrum. It's like a rainbow, or color changing paint. If some one knows please tell me.
yo that description is really hard to pick out what knife you have. try and find any inscriptions on your knife to see if you can find a company name, or maker of the knife, or serial number. good luck.
Yeah, It's kind of hard to give real details. I did, and it says frost, but I am not familer with this company. I looked on google, and some one said its kershaw. Ahh I don't know haha. Thanks for helping man.
I just bought a Kershaw Skyline, but mine is made from 14C28N stainless steel, instead of 13C26 ... the model number is slightly different too (1760x vs. 1760).
The Skyline is the real deal...I waited on it for over a year, then decided to cave in to the positive reviews...it really is the real deal. Thin, light, fast...can handle the tasks most people ask of their knife...not a thick blade, but who wanted to pry things with a folder? Just held one of these at the gun shop today. It is REALLY nice. The handle has a REALLY nice grip, and the blade is razor sharp...
cpmower 1 year ago

Beastofthedeep 1 year ago
Skyline totally available at Wal-Mart as well for similar price!
ReverendCarrying1911 1 year ago

p.s. my evo tantos blade chipped very easy.. lets see how my skyline keeps up.
great review btw!

Has anyone else had this experience?
teamearll 2 years ago

I have sharpened the blade once since taking it out of the box and the sharpening was only necessary because I was using the blade to cut some fiberglass insulation. my only complaint with the blade so far is the liner lock. out of the box the skyline's liner lock passed my initial tap test...
kornozzyc4 2 years ago
love this knife for edc. thumbstuds take some time to get used to, but with practice, you can pop it out with more speed than flipping it.

TacticalJunkie 2 years ago
Just received mine today. 14c28n steel and no date on flipper as well. Will have to get use to the flipper, seems as though I cannot make a "full" deploy each time. Is there a break-in period where it gets better with deployment? Super sharp edge right out of the box for sure!
blueskat 2 years ago
@interestingbanana
Yup. I also purchased a skyline and is as you describe... 14c28n steel and no date on flipper. Nevertheless, still an awesome edc knife.

i think that some of you had a faulty one cause mine can take a decent spine whack. I love this knife so far. it's good edc.
Jake421986 2 years ago
Picked one of these up upon your recommendation as I have many knives. This is the only one I was disappointed in. A light spine whack on the heel of my shoe caused the liner lock to fail over and over. I checked and it was fully engaged each time. It would also fail with a firm grip, index finger in choil. Be warned and please comment if you've had a similar experience. I returned it today for a Leek with the frame lock and it is superb.
jakemug 2 years ago
I do not anticipate using the blade for heavy use or for tactical use, and for me the liner lock is fine in a very light knife. But it would not serve anyone well to turn it over and bang on it, as it will unlock. I also looked at the very popular leek, but it was a little too pointy to be useful to me and about 15 bucks more. You're right though.. this is not a knife you want to bang on.
billywhiz2001 2 years ago
I bought one of these also. The review is right on. I love it for a very lightweight high-value knife. What a deal. I paid 35 bucks total. Made in the USA. The clip kinda sucks-- very tight and will eat your pants unless you carefully modify it. No thumb gimping, but I don't miss it bc of the good ergonomics. And the thumbstuds are really for looks only-- no functionality at all--worthless from closed position. But the flawless flipper (fun) renders the thumb studs unnecessary. Nice.

Bought this knife per review. Poor blade center, thin blade. Sent it to Kershaw for repair, we'll see. Also, clip really tight and over torqued into factory position, tip down. Moved clip for tip up and scale damaged where Kershaw torqued it down. Also, flipper is useless for one-step opening if pivot screw tight enough to be safe, imo.

GREAT review! I had the original Pika II and was happy with it until I watched your Pika II review (Wish I watched your review prior to purchasing it.) LOL Well my Pika II pocket clip fell off and was lost. I needed an alternate EDC knife while I waited for a new clip so I picked up the Skyline (PHX, AZ Wal-Mart- $34.97) I love my Skyline- lighter, quicker acquisition, and SHARP! hey nutnfancy theres a new kershaw knife called the "select fire". Many dealers have heard of it but my dad and I have a prototype. I love it and so does he. it is not assisted opening but it is still cool. it has 2 fold out compartments for screwdriver bits, and a fold out driver.
