I got a new budgie not even 24hrs ago and ive gained some of his trust but i think i ruined it and now he hates me again so i went online and found this. He is calling back, moving around and wants to get closer this makes him very happy thanks for posting!
Im trying to get my budgie to get used to her new home with this song. She's chirping and singing, trying to get out. She's on the nearest side of the cage to the computer. I think she misses the pet shop. :')

@crickechip you got to let him rest for about 1 week (some budcies take longer) when he feels confortable with you, you can start by talking to him and if you pass by his cage always say something to let him kknow that you are there. when you see that he is not afraid of you (it can take months) you can release him in a safe place to see what he does. never pick him up! let him come to your hand when he feels ready. if you want him to go to his cage you can give him his lunch right after he flys

@twoweirdppl yes that woldn't be good because parakeets need to feel they belong with the group! I had this problem too I have a bird named galaxy & once I brought him his mate star(a girl) he was a little rowdy and wouldn't trust me if he was with her! The best thing to do is remember that parakeets are SMART! He's happy he has friends but he still KNOWS you will not hurt him. What you can do is use him to gain the other birds trust! When they see him playing with you everyday they will follow
I got a what I think is a male budgie yesterday morning - he is 10 weeks old and a beautiful blue colour called Sparkie. I know he is new and a bit afraid and everything but even though he lets me stroke his tummy, chest, and sometimes his head, he still doesn't chirp. Is there something wrong, because sometimes he looks as though he is trying to chirp but cant, then he looks and sounds like he is chewing seed?! Im also wondering if there are any good ways to help a budgie 'find his voice'?
@TKDJayJay don't worry when I got my budgie (the 1st I've ever owned) he was around 10 weeks old as well and he didn't chirp at all for the first 2 days. The bird you have sounds like he might do so faster if he is already letting you pat him. Mine refused to let me NEAR him in the first few days let alone let me pat him lol. Now (after 3 months) he sits on my shoulder, eats from my hand, he lets me pat him... Just be patient. Play this clip for him. Mine chirps like crazy when I play it! :)

I took on my nan's budgie cos she could no longer care for it. I'm scared to try to introduce another bird. He is VERY attached to his mirror... I am assuming he is male...he tries to mate with the mirror...a lot! I am playing this and he is not in the least interested... The parakeet doesn't see himself in the mirror, he sees “another” parakeet, this “different parakeet” in the mirror is his friend. take off the mirror and join a female or a male parakeet in a cage next to the other cage. untied them in one room and if they get along join them in the same bird cage. Is it really cruel to just have one? This is my first budgie but my partner and his family have had lots over the years and always had them on their own. They say if you have more than one they won't 'talk' and don't interact very well with humans. I feel so cruel now reading what you guys have written!!

@Hawwieee It is indeed bad to hold a budgie alone. Always get a second one. Budgies live in huge swarms and are very social, they really suffer if they are alone even if you play with him alot. Also a fellow budgie is something else than a human isn't it?
Please do your budgie and yourself a favor and get another one if you do not want to see him/her plucking his/her suffering. Ah, and please remove any mirror or plastic bird out of the cage. But it is great that you worry about your birdy ;).
@Elunesilver I do agree to some extent, but every budgie has a different personalty... that is why some talk and others do not. They may need another budgie in the cage, but some don't. For example, I have a friend who had one budgie, but it was sad most of the time. She later bought him a mate. He is now very happy with his friend. I have a budgie who is just fine without a mate, he is always chirping, playing, eating and behaving healthy.

I, too, had a budgie which was always chirping, playing, ect. when he was alone for a short period of time (his partner had died). You can not see through budgies (their emotions), they seem to be happy, energetic and healthy although f.e. they are ill at the same time. "who is just fine without a mate" <- How do you know that? It is a great thing if you can play with him or her but
@Elunesilver Thank you very much for caring about the welfare of my bird. And I do understand about them living in large flocks. Budgies do a good job hiding their emotions, is something I must not have taken into account, but I do still think some are fine living without a mate... maybe I am wrong. But, like you stated, we do not know if they are happy or not. He appears happy and is healthy so that is the best I can do at the moment. I might get him a mate one day. Thank you for the insight.
having a fellow human as a friend or a bird as a friend: which one would *you* prefer? I'm not forcing you to buy another one or anything. But these birds live in huge swarms so it would only be natural for them to have another bird around. Well what I am saying is actually: There is no way to judge how a budgie really feels just because he is chirping and "behaving healthy". Just got two parakeets that haven't been socialized much in the last year. They are excited to hear new voices. I think I will have to get a cd with the budgie calls.

Looking after a friends Budgie for the day a young male. Thought I'd see how he'd respond to some Budgie sounds and he's gone crazy with excitement singing along very happily. Very cool.

I took on my nan's budgie cos she could no longer care for it. I'm scared to try to introduce another bird. He is VERY attached to his mirror... I am assuming he is male...he tries to mate with the mirror...a lot! I am playing this and he is not in the least interested... I'm letting him walk around the room and he's not approached and doesn't appear to be taking much notice at all... I fear if I try to introduce a female he'll miss his mirror and try to attack the new budgie... Help! TIA

@nemonoo You gotta try if you wanna see some results! The mirror causes psychological damages. The parakeet doesn't see himself in the mirror, he sees “another” parakeet, this “different parakeet” in the mirror is his friend. take off the mirror and join a female or a male parakeet in a cage next to the other cage. untied them in one room and if they get along join them in the same bird cage. (:

Is it really cruel to just have one? This is my first budgie but my partner and his family have had lots over the years and always had them on their own. They say if you have more than one they won't 'talk' and don't interact very well with humans. I feel so cruel now reading what you guys have written!!

I have a question- is it bad if I have only one budgie and it jumps around its cage looking for the budgies? Im not sure.. I just feel like Im teasing the poor thing :(

@Hawwieee It is indeed bad to hold a budgie alone. Always get a second one. Budgies live in huge swarms and are very social, they really suffer if they are alone even if you play with him alot. Also a fellow budgie is something else than a human isn't it?
Please do your budgie and yourself a favor and get another one if you do not want to see him/her plucking his/her suffering. Ah, and please remove any mirror or plastic bird out of the cage. But it is great that you worry about your birdy ;).

@Elunesilver I do agree to some extent, but every budgie has a different personalty... that is why some talk and others do not. They may need another budgie in the cage, but some don't. For example, I have a friend who had one budgie, but it was sad most of the time. She later bought him a mate. He is now very happy with his friend. I have a budgie who is just fine without a mate, he is always chirping, playing, eating and behaving healthy.

@Austinten4 Hello Austinten4, I don't want to be rude or anything so forgive me if I sound a little like that.
I, too, had a budgie which was always chirping, playing, ect. when he was alone for a short period of time (his partner had died). You can not see through budgies (their emotions), they seem to be happy, energetic and healthy although f.e. they are ill at the same time. "who is just fine without a mate" <- How do you know that? It is a great thing if you can play with him or her but

@Elunesilver Thank you very much for caring about the welfare of my bird. And I do understand about them living in large flocks. Budgies do a good job hiding their emotions, is something I must not have taken into account, but I do still think some are fine living without a mate... maybe I am wrong. But, like you stated, we do not know if they are happy or not. He appears happy and is healthy so that is the best I can do at the moment. I might get him a mate one day. Thank you for the insight.

having a fellow human as a friend or a bird as a friend: which one would *you* prefer? I'm not forcing you to buy another one or anything. But these birds live in huge swarms so it would only be natural for them to have another bird around. Well what I am saying is actually: There is no way to judge how a budgie really feels just because he is chirping and "behaving healthy". It would be great if you could get him/her and yourself! a new friend. Thank you for reading and hopefully understanding.
