@snookienibbles the (invisible) cymble was removed because it blocked the view of seeing the drummer for tv. The drummer was just playing it the way he was meant to play it. If you listen no cymble sound is heard so they were playing it live.
I do wonder if these millions of women fans of bands like "The Kinks" and "The Beatles" enjoyed the music or just the faces of the musicans? Do they even listen to the lyrics?
man those girls in those days were a fuckin pain in the ass it was their fault the beatles didn't want to go on tour anymore because you couldn't even enjoy their music. DAMN BITCHES
@ChronosDigitalus Indeed, I was wondering too... Did they give them something before the show so they would get sexually exited? xD I mean, they're not looking that hot, are they?
I'm a 19 year old girl and when I heard that Ray Davies was coming to my hometown, I cried like a little baby. The Kinks are my third fave band EVER, behind The Beatles and Eric Clapton! CANNOT WAIT TO SEE DAVIES LIVE!!!
@groovechile68 You are a very open minded young lady. I'm so glad to see that people of your generation are aware of the great music that came out of my generation. I'm 57, but I remember as a young teen ager how awesome the music was. The Kinks were one of my favorites. Hope you enjoyed the show : )
I'm 61 and am glad you appreciate one of my favorite bands and one of the greatest from that era. Still, I get frustrated by the way so many posters your age and in their twenties always need to claim one group/singer or another is "the best band of all time". Those of us who lived through the 60's know there were so many amazing bands then that it's silly to make those kind of claims and we don't.
@StevenTut I didn't literally mean that they're the "best band of all time." It's just an expression, and more of an opinion. They're my favorite band. Sorry, I didn't think my comment would offend anyone ?
I don't think many would agree that Green Day has even joined the "pantheon of great bands" yet. I assume your "pantheon" would include artists/bands like The Beatles, The Stones, Neil Young, The Who, Jimi Hendrix, Dylan, The Band, Steely Dan, Beach Boys, James Brown, Led Zeppelin, Joni Mitchell,The Byrds, Marvin Gaye, Elvis, Jethro Tull, The Kinks, Elton John, David Bowie, Leonard Cohen, etc., etc.,
Green Day hasn't done anything that would allow them to walk in that company.
@StevenTut Well, Green Day will be in the Reading festival, and the reading festival only alowes the bests bands, THere played, Nirvana ,Red hot chili peppers, Etc,
and yes, green day was in woodstock.
Maaany bands didn't wanted to go to woodstock because they complained that theyr instruments wil lget dirty and damaged, But Green Day didn't.
@robertofly3000 Playing at the Reading Festival doesn't mean Green Day has the same status in the pantheon of greatest rock groups as Hendrix, the Stones, Kinks, etc. They're a good group but have yet to create music that will endure through successive generations. Green Day most certainly did not play at Woodstock. They weren't around then. There was only one Woodstock - the original in 1969. Other fests ripped off the name but never came close to the spirit, magic, and music of Woodstock.
@robertofly3000 You missed my point completely. To me and many others, there was only one Woodstock festival - in 1969. While, in many ways, todays mega festivals like Rothbury, Coachella, Isle of Wight, Burning Man may be amazing experiences, it still seems like i will never again feel the thrill and unpretentious vibe that I had when I was in an old warehouse illegally at 3:00 AM with 1000 kids having the time of our lives. Incidentally, there was nearly never a drop of alcohol at these gatherings.
@StevenTut Although I otherwise agree with you, the 1994 "woodstock" was put on by the original promoter, and I'm pretty sure the 1999 one was, too. (I wasn't born for the 1969 one, but I was 17 when I went in 1994) Quality wise? Not that there weren't any good moments at the 1994 event, but the 1969 was the best and most memorable one.
@KitchensLady It doesn't matter whether the promoters were the originals or not. The other festivals had no connection to the original 1969 fest. and using the Woodstock name was a blatant attempt to cash in on it with a younger generation. The later fests. should have had their own original names.
Woodstock was an amazing event during my 19th year and I'm very thankful I was there. When we left for it, we had no clue what it was going to become. As we got near the site we began to realize we were taking part in a special event. I never considered it the climax of my life though. A great milestone, certainly. The 60's - early 70's were an incredible time to come of age!

@007jkirk It's really not that hard to find great songs after the 80's. You just have to have an open mind. Let me ask you this: Do you enjoy any Big Bands music? I do. it's different than this but no less good. It's the same with newer music. You can't keep expecting the same. Things change. Some for the better, and some not. Seek out the good and rejoice, because great music is alive and well.
@007jkirk The 80's were pretty shitty overall for music. The 90's were way better for creativity. I agrees that the present time is lacking in good music.
Well you're in luck, since the Kinks are one of the greatest bands ever, and they recorded hundreds of songs, many of them as good or better than this.
yes. absolutely brilliant. but, what's wrong with screaming? that's what the birds did back then. they screamed. wish they did it now. that would be something.
It's nice to hear some bass cutting through the mix on some of these old classics. Listening on modern digitally remastered copies through some good headphones can reveal string nuances we could never hear back then.
@videomaniac108 Some of us could hear all the nuances back then - and we don't like it when the digital re masterers start 'cleaning up' old recordings. Luckily, it hasn't happened to the Kinks, but I have yet to hear an authentic version of Marianne Faithfull singing 'As Tears Go By'. That compelling drum that you could feel through the floorboards has almost been soft pedalled out altogether.
We were in the 6th grade, and it was 1965. When Joe R., my first "boyfriend" asked me to "go steady" and wear his ID bracelet, this was the song that was playing, so it became "our song." We "broke up" 2 weeks later, but I still love this song!
the kinks could of been a better band than the beatles if only they had written better songs than them and been better looking. perhaps the kinks should of gone to the gym more, if they had six packs they could of taken over the pop world.x
It was the 60's, I was a young teen, and this music was our banner cus we hated the establishment, I still hate the establishment 40 plus yrs later lol
Please can any devoted Kinks fan's let me know of their favorite songs! I know the most famous ones but maybe songs you've encountered on albums??? Thank you!
Well, for one thing, they're lipsynching so what you see won't necessarily have anything to do with what or how it was recorded. Regarding the recording, back then there was no chorus effect available and what was often done was the singer would overdub his own voice, singing the melody twice on different tracks. The Beatles did this frequently.
Hate me all you want but I beg to differ as well, KInks did NOT sound anything like the Beatles, in my opinion Kinks were more raw! I like them better.
If they draped the drum riser, could have gone with a KISS motif before there was a KISS band! hahaha The drum riser reminded me of Motley Crue's Tommy Lee as well. Noting the Gibson Flying V, Gibson instigated the great modern guitar era after much prodding from Mr. LES PAUL!! (RIP)
june 10 2011 Check how he plays the Flying V with his hand thru the V to strum, toooo cool, or what! If that Flying V is still in existence today, it would be around 47 years old, and worth a gold mine or two I suspect. Any guitarists out there who have a '64-'64 Flying V?
its thanks to the British pop music TV shows of the 1960s that the quality apperances can be appreciated , shows like the ones above with endless screaming where arranged by those who did not take pop music serious so siongs were ruined by silly screaming even at stars who did not appeal to ballad type songs the American market didnt have a clue. As was echoed by Pink Floyd when they came across American record companies who were totally lost as Floyd were not a 3 minute single band .
If I had a time machine and could travel back to see awesome bands like this, the only thing that would put me off are those stupid girls screaming. YES THEY'RE HOT, GET A GRIP

yes. absolutely brilliant. but, what's wrong with screaming? that's what the birds did back then. they screamed. wish they did it now. that would be something.
robertbatterson 5 months ago
Some of the most brilliant musicians ever, and these jackasses just stand there screaming.
Loof42 5 months ago
It's nice to hear some bass cutting through the mix on some of these old classics. Listening on modern digitally remastered copies through some good headphones can reveal string nuances we could never hear back then.
videomaniac108 5 months ago
@videomaniac108 Some of us could hear all the nuances back then - and we don't like it when the digital re masterers start 'cleaning up' old recordings. Luckily, it hasn't happened to the Kinks, but I have yet to hear an authentic version of Marianne Faithfull singing 'As Tears Go By'. That compelling drum that you could feel through the floorboards has almost been soft pedalled out altogether.
99Quench 4 months ago
That was the most awkward use of a Flying V body i've ever seen. The song is still amazing though.

MrMegaduder 6 months ago in playlist The Kinks playlist.
@MrMegaduder Ha ha, I don't think the Beatles had six packs, but I understand the sentiment.

I don't understand.. seems like there are two voices at the same time, but I see no second mic. Is it some kind of live Chorus effect?
NeilJMontague 7 months ago
@NeilJMontague sounds like reverb and delay through the board.
jdlewis78 7 months ago
@NeilJMontague
Well, for one thing, they're lipsynching so what you see won't necessarily have anything to do with what or how it was recorded. Regarding the recording, back then there was no chorus effect available and what was often done was the singer would overdub his own voice, singing the melody twice on different tracks. The Beatles did this frequently.
brianallancobb 7 months ago
Hate me all you want but I beg to differ as well, KInks did NOT sound anything like the Beatles, in my opinion Kinks were more raw! I like them better.

@17DJLOVER Totally different sound, vocals, harmony, production I cannot understand how anyone can think that these two bands sound similar.

LES PAUL!! (RIP)
MetallicBill 7 months ago
june 10 2011 Check how he plays the Flying V with his hand thru the V to strum, toooo cool, or what! If that Flying V is still in existence today, it would be around 47 years old, and worth a gold mine or two I suspect. Any guitarists out there who have a '64-'64 Flying V?
hkyoutoob 7 months ago
@hkyoutoob ,,,yeah, I somehow thought Jeff Watson invented that move! He's the most modern player to do it as a trademark

it sounds like only a couple of girls are singing the entire time and they like take 5 seconds to catch their breath
cmadera94 7 months ago 4
its thanks to the British pop music TV shows of the 1960s that the quality apperances can be appreciated , shows like the ones above with endless screaming where arranged by those who did not take pop music serious so siongs were ruined by silly screaming even at stars who did not appeal to ballad type songs the American market didnt have a clue. As was echoed by Pink Floyd when they came across American record companies who were totally lost as Floyd were not a 3 minute single band .
justagog 7 months ago
@justagog The screaming was genuine, not staged, ask the Beatles, it's real
