I didn't have any idea about jailbreak or locking unlocking. I updated my iPhone coz I couldn't even play songs on it. Now it asks me to insert a valid sim to activate which I don't have. Now its iOS is 4.0.1 and all I can do is dial Emergency numbers and look at it. :(. I'm using a PC windows 7. I need to get it fixed for free. Please guide me,,,, Thanks

@BovynEnnio Well, I'm trying to update the software from 3.1.2 and go to at least 4.0. I have to jailbreak and unlock, so for me to do that I'd need an AT&T card, which I do not. I'm on T-mobile and love my service so I do not want to change over. I need a solution that will at least jailbreak it from the get go, like pwnage tool. If I was to update right now, I'd lose everything and would not be able to get back into my phone if I just updated to 4.0. Thanks for the idea...

check this to know if your iphone 3gs belongs to old or new bootrom...

Check 3rd to 5th digit:

1. If 3rd digit is 0 = New Bootrom

2. If 3rd digit is 9 and

(a) 4th&5th digits less than 42 = old bootrom

(b) 4th&5th digits greater than 44 = new bootrom

(c) 4th&5th digits between 42 and 44 = mixed results

Some late models, like the ones made on week 46+ are positive for New bootroom, which means tethered. BUT some people noticed that some late models that were refurbished came back with the old bootroom and they got a untethered jailbreak.

I had iphone 3gs 3.0 jailbroken last year to my carrier; T-mobile. I accidently up graded to 4.0. Yakiees NOW I have lock phone I can't use.

I remember on my jailbroken phone, in Cydia, it said some thing like "This device has SHSHs on file for Iphone OS" I don't really know what it really means.

This iphone has old boot Rom and model(MB). My phone is like $ 300.00 paper weight. I am a window user.

Where is jailbreak/unlock for window users?

Not for OS4, but...

If it really said in cydia shsh's on file, then you're lucky..

Look at saurik's tutorial (at his website) to find out how to downgrade... Then downgrade to 3.0 and jailbreak on that version again and wait for OS4 JailBreak

@secretagentmandan All you need to do is download f0recast (works with both Mac and Windows), launch it and connect your iPhone 3GS and it’ll tell you all you need to know.

To find out if you have the new bootrom or the old one, read the line that says untethered. If it says Yes, then it’s the old bootrom and if it says No, you have the new bootrom
