how long does that cat shoot the cake?!?! sheesh that's like the whole short. but a great clip though... wish i would have lived in those simplier times...
This was a very interesting chapter in movie history, the animated cartoon and what Disney did with it. The atmosphere was more along the lines of silicon valley than hollywood it seems to me, with people like walt creating studios in their families garages. A unique oppertunity for people who wanted to get into the entertainment buisness to take advantage of the new technology. Disney & Iwerks remind me a little of Steve Jobs & Wozniak
Not as dirty as some of the following Disney works, but still, what's the creepy guy in the top hat (representing the wolf?) doing to the girl when she finds him hiding in her house? Then young red instantly makes out with with the pilot?
I have heard that the original yarns of Red Riding hood were about entering womanhood, but still...
Such a creepy morality that takes over when you get into these old cartoons, yet the company becomes the bastion of family values and child entertainment.
One needs to be careful about reading in too much of a personal awareness into something that is simple. Much of all this is based on Victorian Melodrama and the sense of "chivalry." Perhaps a greater awarenes of cultural history would help in this understanding. If there's something "dirty" about it, the dirt is in the mind of the perceiver. So be careful, when making such sordid remarks, the mind is on parade.
This is such a wonderfully intelligent response to SO MANY of today's viewers who watch these historical films with a 21st century mind. No one researches history anymore in order to see films within their context. Thanks again.
oh god, its people like you that gives cartoons a bad rep. i doubt disney wasn't implying any sick deviant sexual innuendo in this cartoon. The guy in the top hat was probably trying to kid nap her and hold her hostage (but in your sick case, rape) and the girl thanked the pilot for saving her life by giving him a kiss, and hey maybe they knew each other before hand or were going out (or in your sick case, shes just a slut)
Even if the "creepy guy in the hat" is trying to rape red as you seem to be implying (and it's not clear that that's the case), how does that mean the cartoon itself has a "creepy morality"? After all, it's not as if the cartoon glorifies rape. If that's what he's doing, he's doing it BECAUSE HE'S THE VILLAIN! By your logic, any story with a villain in it has "creepy morality" even if the point of the story is that the villain's actions are wrong.
"In the beginning, the Laugh-O-Grams were only about a minute long. Titles included "Cleaning Up!!?", "Kansas City Girls are Rolling Their Own Now", "Take a Ride Over Kansas City Streets" and "Kansas City's Spring Cleanup." Disney based his subject matter, and won over the Kansas City audience, on problems and corruption within the local government. Once these proved successful, he moved on to longer shorts, using well known fairy tales and children's stories as his subjects."
Actually, I think I read he did cartoons about local government corruption before this. Of course, I also read that each of those was only about a minute long, so I guess you could say that those don't really count.
This is one of the rare films that Walt himself drew. His animation style never improved since, he mostly hired men just coming from Film school

I thought Little Red Riding Hood was one of the Laugh O Grams that wasn't recovered until 2009. How was this posted in 2008?

Alright Walt, we get it. The cat's baking the cake by shooting it. That's genuinely funny. THE FIRST FEW TIMES.

@SergeantLuke Actually the cat was using the gun to shot holes through them to make doughnuts

1922 Walt must have been going to the out house, and firing up the stove to cook .

Great to see these old films. I was inspired by Walt's latest Bio Walt Disney: The Triumph of the American Imagination. Great reading!
