  • ur dad looks lyk a old lady !

  • damn, 3 230-videos.

  • How do I back up my website, so if my host crashes I have my website backed up

  • a really good backup is having 2 HDDs in ur machine and when u save anything it saves it to both HDDs so if one fails you have a 100% copy on the other one

  • he's pretty much talking about Apples TimeMachine built into OS X - good foresight Joe !!

  • your dad looks like my dad, stubern & simple :P

except your dad gets what your saying lol!

my dad yells and doesn't listen

  • @mastermindzh same

  • Personally, I recommend DropBox for windows, because it automatically synchronizes a shared folder it creates on that DropBox account, for all computers logged in on that account. Although it uses the internet, it's private, so nobody really has access unless they were to want to break into your account for some reason, but most people don't need to worry about that, as long as your password is secure.

  • And in addition, it is a program, not (necessarily) web-based.

  • my old mac broke, now i use it as a pc.

  • The ASUS TS mini Home Server is great for Backup and File Management on a network

  • They say "the Apple doesn't fall far from the tree". Pun intended

  • I have a 1.5 TB Seagate external drive that came with software that backs up the folders i selected and runs on a schedule which i set.

  • create a shortcut and give it short line to copy my documents to :/d or whatever the external drive is

  • At 13:45 Chris said he trusts Google with his data (at the time) lol

  • i still have flopys

  • Dude I have an eight year old computer that I got from my grand parents.

I love to collect old stuff.

    I HAVE A MAC G2 FOR PETE'S SAKE.

  • Just make him a batch script.... Like this

    @ECHO OFF

    FOR /F "TOKENS=1* DELIMS= " %%A IN ('DATE/T') DO SET Today=%%B

    set dadsbackup=D:\backup

    copy %userprofile%\"My Documents" %dadsbackup%\%Today%

  • @Radikll eew.., why would you use windows?

  • @MetalShreader Well, if you want more freedom, you would use Windows. You wanna keep it cheaper with same hardware, you would use Windows. You are a hardcore PC gamer, you would use Windows. You want to be virus free, you would use a Mac.

  • @MetalShreader I don't anymore... Linux all the way!

  • @Radikll saying "linux all the way!" only is saying "im poor :( wish i had windows 7 damnit maybe ill get a netbook from my mom on christmass i hear it has windows 7 starter" thats all i heard you say

  • @bizzy400 I've used Windows 7 since the alpha builds were available on the Internet... And I was able to buy Windows 7 cheap from school, which I use to game. But I don't like using Windows because it's poor for productivity, runs slowly even on the newest of computers, and has viruses.

  • @Radikll I belive that linux should only be put on low-end computers such as the presario c500 I'm on at the moment.

  • @GManTelevision I guess you don't know that over 80% of supercomputers run Linux.

  • @Radikll I meant in common use, sorry about that.

  • @bizzy400 i use windows 7 ultimate, and i know for a fact linux is a far superior operating system.

  • I just love his dad! Way to go, Joe! :D

  • The best method to backup data is simply use a NAS drive on network router or even buy a Windows Home Server. The cheaps method is NAS drives cost round in total £290gbp.00 or Windows Home Server from HP for £418.00gbp.

  • Chris, make a batch file that is like

    copy "c:\my documents\*.*" e:\backtup

Customize it to suit your needs!

call it BackUp.bat TADA! It automatically overwrites old data.

I am sitting here pulling my hair out like "I CAN DO THAT IT FOR YOU!"

I write free apps to make things easier for myself to do everyday things, thats my incentive! It's not hard to program nowadays with all the FREE online guides/videos/chatrooms/books/help/etc. I whip up complex customizable applications in 20 minutes!

  • I want .mac to take it to the next level

  • wot a noobs

  • Nice Vid

  • Xdrive isn't that bad

  • Wouldn't using the Briefcase function of windows achieve what Joe wants? It could automatically copy his files to the external drive without him having to worry about it, plus it's already part of windows. It saved my ass a couple of times in high school!

  • Foldershare is cool for automatic replication to another computer. Also Microsoft Synctoy does a good job. Both free.

  • Take a look at using Microsoft's robocopy. I have created a batch file to robocopy (backup) files to another computer.

  • What about Windows Vista automatic backup?

  • BRADHblackdragon, he explained why you cant have one click backup

  • "The should give iWork away for free." Tell me about it. I've been saying that for ages now.

  • i think chris is wrong on this.......his dad is asking for a fair and worthy service..one click back-uping and chris'es answer is to drag and drop...lousy and doesnt fulfil his request!think on chris!chris should stop listening and start hearing away from his own noise

  • Time Machine. Time Machine. Time Machine!!!!!

  • just get a drobo It's a automated backup storage cube.

  • Acronis. It's all you need.

Sure drag and drop works fine, but does that protect you from disaster of the OS itself? Of course not.

Chris if you've never tried Acronis, you should. More than one click like Dad wants, but once setup incremental backups / full backups keep the entire drive or drives backed up properly. Those backups can also be mounted with one click for easy access.

  • bought Acronis True Image and I like it. Can make a backup image of your system and put them in CD/DVDs or in an ext hdd. I also have Allwaysnc and that's pretty nice to keep a mirror image of hdd/folders you want mirrored.

  • Is Time Machine on the new Mac OS something we should be excited about?

  • they should do fire proof hdd it would be cool

  • Backup is hard for me as I've got so much media (HD video) that for me to back it up, I would need a 2 TB hard drive to act as a backup. I wish I had a Mac Pro (four drive bays would be perfect for backing up)

  • For backup, have a raid 1 and have one of the disks as a draw´, that way you have a real time COMPLEAT backup of ALL your data and even improved read speed, then when you shut down you can take out the disk and be sure you have a safe backup.

  • AJenbo raid 1 setup is nice but if data corrupts or you get a virus it will be coppied on to both drives thats why its still good to have somthink like a USB or firewire hdd or usb flash drive

  • you guys should have a baseball catch or something

  • that's a good conversation discussing different experiences with computing. The best is that you both agree it's about the User. FSU. W.Mich Rocks!
