There is an enigmatic serenity in his expression. A wholeness and completeness in his 'self'. This is all that which makes him an outstanding painter,
What kind of paint is this. Is it acrylic or oil. Seems to come in large quantities. Cannot find that where I live in Sweden. Where can I find this in Europe.? Also the type f polymer tool used.
Laura-turning the volume off as you suggest would wipe out the music (good) but also wipe out the interesting things which Richter has to say (bad) as this video is an interview. Thanks for the idea :-)
These paintings are fantastic. I attempted paintint this way some years ago with metal decorting tools but they were not flexible enough and of course too small. Are your tools made of a thin flexible steel attached a light wood.?
@yogasanasbudapest No, it's not, Richter knows it isn't, so do Elizabeth Peyton and Jenny Saville. Granted, painting is due a renaissance, but it's not dead. Not yet.
@jesusonamotorbike OH.MY.GOD. art-wise you're the most irresponsibly ignorant person i read something from. shut the fuck up if you just cannot understand.
@KEPHALLE i suggest you read Who Paid the Piper?: CIA and the Cultural Cold War by Frances Stonor Saunders and learn the involvement of your government had on using Abstract Expressionism, taste makers. I assume that your are yankkk, because you lack irony and your are aggressive and rude.
@jesusonamotorbike wrong, and wrong. i'm not american, or a "yank", as you might say. apparently CIA supported feminism too, that doesn't mean abstract art is a fraud, since the evolution of painting from the late 19th century led to abstractism, wich was born primarily in Europe! plus most of the New York School were of european origins or directly emigrated from Europe to USA. i didn't read that book, but from what you told me, it seems a pile of speculations based on some more speculations.
I feel like biting the critic's nose, is the exact shape of a strawberry! Or the strawberries i got this morning have the shape of an art historian's nose; the truth is probably in the middle
have a look at neo rausch on youtube by fuzzyjazz...a very simple and obvious refutation of this nonsense about painting being dead in principle...Marcel Duchamp my ass..his problem was he couldn't paint...Art has nothing to do with money...never did.. never will
It is unusual to have an Art Museum accept and canonize an artist who has such a broad range in his work. It's great for the Art World to be open to a more free and multi directional approach. There's no need to pigeon hole Artists and restrict them from experimentation and change. Bravo for the courage and humanity to show such an exhibit. It goes to show what talent, humility, dedication and perseverance can accomplish.
i think it has more to do with art world fame, status, and sales... from my personal experience the "art world" is fickle and generally only interested in works that fall within its narrow discourse.
"Das Ganze läuft ja so unbewusst ab, dass ich das Ding auch nicht erklären kann. Ich weiß das ja nicht was ich tue und das muss auch so sein. Wenn ich es wüsste und wenn ich es planen würde, dann ist es sowieso unsinnig. Dann könnte man es sich ja ausdenken!" G.R.
G.R. wirkt so herrlich normal und mit einer so tiefen Ruhe, wo kommen all diese Bilder bloß her?
Amazing body of work by Richter and nice to see a smile from him. Most artists appear too serious in their interviews. I like his abstract paintings they convey more meaning and representation than his realist works.
@tjhurl85 "they convey more meaning and representation than his realist works." That's a pretty subjective statement. I think they say less which is what he intended, to show that there is no where else to go in abstraction.
Thank you! Seeing the works of Gerhardt Richter, a living genius, is sheer joy and a visual fiest! Each painting is like a symphony-rich, mulilayered and powerful.
May Painters and Painting NEVER DIE. It is the process, the movement of the hand and eye. Many painters today...like Murakami and his style support the ROBOTS...and thereby are missing the whole effect of hands-on INTENTION> And the audience is UNABLE to feel anything but the Technique.

The music is way too loud.
Also, the choice of music is cheesy and renders the film unprofessional.
Sorry I have to say this, but it doesn't pay much tribute to this fantastic artist.

The nice thing about Richter , Polke and Kiefer is that they produced some of the finest paintings of the 20th century after "the death of painting."
(The piano music doesn't bother me, thank god it's not the atonal violin creaking that usually accompanies visual art documentaries.)
