  • springsteens version is so much more depressing

  • where you from in west.pa ?im from gbh.

  • Give it up! Both versions are great. Period.

  • Thanks for posting I get homesick and this song reminds me of Summers growing up in the Burgh and this would come on the Radio. Much love thanks for sharing the great tunes!!!<3 ^_^

  • killin' me 240p

  • Everyone has their own interpretation of music...I think The Clarks did a very good job at making a Springsteen song something people in the central PA area can relate to. I happen to like this version...

  • congradulations you managed to take the soul out of this great springsteen song

  • @Zelmquist Congratulations you managed to spell congratulations wrong.

  • @SteveWooley I agree. Just listened to Boss version and said "hmmm I think the Clarks version is better" but in fact it's just more fun and less of a downer. I also feel it has more of an emotional impact cause it sounds bitter and regretful for a youth missed.

  • @Epiphony Um, it kinda is a downer song. Besides that, kids today wouldn't necessarily get married because it's the "right thing" to do. It's more likely they would just move on and continue procreating randomly...

  • reppin johnstownn! saw them live, AMAZING!

  • I think people are talking about two different things. This is definitely a more entertaining version, but I feel Springsteen's has more emotional depth. It's not just sad, there is hope too. It sounds more like a real guy telling his story and it just happens to be set to some haunting music. This is something I'd play on repeat the original is a song you play once and mull over because it affects you so deeply. Both have their place.

  • Def like The CLARKS version better !!!!!! <3

  • Actually i think they formed their music around the lyrics better then Bruce. every time it got into the "sad" lyrics of the song they slowed down the beat and tempo of their music, adjusting well to the lyrics. when they sang "down to the river they simply brought the beat and tempo back up. the lyrics of the chorus are not "sad" like the rest of the song. infact I think because its a rememberance of the "good times" i think the up tempo of the beat is well suited. i think it all fits perfect.

  • from western pa... windber.... goin to see them tomorrow at a aaaba game...

  • Luv this song

  • It sounds like the clarks are a good group. The singer is good and the baand is tight BUT their version of this song mangles the meaning of this beyond all belief. I swear it sounds like a clueless Bobby Darin swinging the song with his fingers snapping and everything. I would only ask that the Clarks READ the lyrics of the song they are covering befor they give it such a grossly inappropriate treatment..

  • @broomenpenny Disagreed. Yes, lyrically it's a sad song, but that doesn't mean that the music can't be a little more upbeat. I've heard the original, and to be honest, i almost fell asleep.

  • Just saw The Clarks live in Dubois. One of the best live performances I've seen.

  • Never really been a fan of Bruce, the clarks are absolutely amazing- and they def sing it better:)

  • Rarely is a song better thant he original, but i have always thought their version Blew the Boss' out of the water...err the river. Yeah i just made a lame joke lol.

  • i'll never forget the guys coming off the east coast swing of the rubber meets the road tour and me telling them the song was in heavy rotation on pgh. radio.

i told them when they got home from the west coast they'd better damned well be prepared to provide this song to the fans....i knew (they thought i was kidding)

  • Good song

  • Down to the YOUGH RIVER!!!! it good living in western PA

  • Its great living by these guys!!!!

  • reminds me of home i need to get back there . western pa

  • it just kicks ass..plain & simple..they need to play up here in MASS..@ the Calvin Theater, Iron Horse or Mt. Park

  • Only seems fitting that a band from Pittsburgh, could re-make a classic like "The River" and make it there very own. Sorry Bruce but they do it better, must be the MonValley in their voices that makes the song ring so true.

  • Bruce who...? Haha, this is so much better then Springsteens shitty version, keep on rockin' guys! \m/

  • I grew up in Johnstown, PA ... well Richland but this song is amazing. I love the clarks they're great <3

  • Going to see the clarks play erie tonight. Western PA represent

  • @andymac1025 In erie they were at shurlocks.. I was there to my friend

  • I was born in Johnstown, Pennsylvania but moved to Louisiana 2 years ago. My dad was a steelworker and the he raised me to never forget where I'm from, that shitty little town made me who I am now. I'm 18 now and I would give just about anything to see the clarks in my hometown one more time.

  • awesome song. love the Clarks. and ive come to the conclusion mostly every single person commenting on this video is from western pa. including me.

  • I spent fifteen years in the Pittsburgh area. Saw the Clarks maybe a dozen times. No regional band in America deserves national recognition more than these guys.

  • this song isn`t about Johnston , Pa. ,,,, the name Johnston Company is from where Bruce grew up in Jersey

  • thumbs up if your life was legitimately rough. (none of tis bad day shit, but straight up suckage your whole life) this song is meant for us!!!!

  • this version is way better than bruce's i think lol thats just me

  • @tamadrummer20 This version is not as emotional as Bruce's version is. This version is good, but the original by "The Boss" I think is the best.

  • @tamadrummer20 I think so too. Its very very rare for me to like something more than the original (which I loved). I actually like this one better. Right up there with Bruce's hungry heart and thunder road. Bruce's old stuff is absolutely awesome. Ultimately its the story though and that's all Bruce.

  • Great cover! So happy I found this band. I live on the other side of the world, but if you simply change the name of the girl and the town, the song could just as well apply to my hometown.

  • Killer cover. What else would you expect from this band? Gawddam ...

  • great cover of bruce springsteen's the river!, and im a huge bruce fan,

  • Another awesome song by the clarks

  • this song is soo true about johnstown, i live here and its basically a huge shit hole haha work marry then die

  • very good cover

  • i remember this cover being included on some sort of charity disc....maybe somehing do with Joe Grushecky........Rusted Root may be on it also...let me know if anyone has the disc!!!

  • im from the burg too! this song is sick!

  • all four of these boys all went to IUP where I go to school. IUP is where it all started for these guys

  • iup!!!!!!!

  • bruce who ?

  • This song is about the town that i live in about an hour and a half from Pittsburgh, it's called Johnstown. This song rings so true to the way we were raised.

  • sorry to tell you people but Scott is not from pittsburgh he is from connellsville pa. thats where i live. i used to deliver pizza to his dad all the time. nice people

  • @wlb7718 Who cares?

  • @Jacobovizzle eat cock fag boy

  • @wlb7718 Neither a fag, neither a boy, and I don't eat cock. Again, who cares if he's from Pittsburgh or Connellsville?

  • @wlb7718 this song is actually about where i'm from Called Johnstown. It rings so true to this area. That's how we were raised, you were either the son/daughter of a steel miller or a son/daughter of a miner. If u were a son you followed in ur dads footsteps. Mosy people from there worked in the mills, it was hard work to do but they all did it. Have you ever heard of the movie ALL THE RIGHT MOVES? IT WAS MADE HERE IT WILL GIVE YOU AN IDEA. ALSO SLAP SHOT WAS MADE HERE IN JOHNSTOWN AS WELL.

  • i like this version better then springsteen's :)

  • its not too late guys get out there get known ur awesome always have been always will be!

  • I THINK ITS CRAZY THAT OVER 36000 PEOPLE VIEWED THIS SONG AND LESS THEN 10% HAVE LIKED IT..... THATS SAD. IM FROM THE SOUTH SIDE AND BEAVER COUNTY. THERE HUGE IN BOTH PLACES...... I LOVE THEM. CLARKS FOR LIFE

  • pittsburgh my hometown and yours we school all y'inz in music thumbs up for the 'burgh

  • @schelble23 me too

  • Thanks for putting this song on here

  • seen the clarks back when i was in 7th grade over 5 years ago and i still think their great

  • I can really feel this song cause I have lived it .(I was born in Monongahela hospital ) . I know they have lived it too. A great tribute to Bruce , but shackling a better recording than the Boss.

  • i was born and still living in pittsburgh. i just saw The Clarks in concert. they r amazing

  • this song was written about me

  • ha i livd n dery cant u tewl? lmao j/k. but no, derry is pretty retarded tho haha. but now i live in greensburgh, and work at ups sadly :( go steelers n pens btw!!!!!! too bad the pirates cant win a world series or somethin.

  • they rocked at this years Mt. Pleasant Glass Festival!

  • Cant Help but Love The Clarks, yet another reason to love Pittsburgh.

  • Born in johnstown. Now live in pittsburgh. Greatest pittsburgh band ever

  • Hello jenny I live close to johnstown also

  • haha i do to but i still smack on it! Why? Cuz it's Johnstown :-P The flood was the best thing ever, too bad it didn't take out Charles too!!!

(Tho not meant to play light on a tragedy, in all truth it was a horrible thing that happened, and a senseless loss of life due to greed.)

  • Johnstown is about a half hour from me. Why all the smack on it?

  • great cover. Can't beat the boss, his song writing incredible.

  • Love it<3

  • Just saw them 9/16 in Altoona just as good as ever. I could give two shits about the Johnstown part. It's just a really great song. Much better than the original!

  • yes it a goddamn godd cover

  • Good!

  • i just seen them like an hour ago for the first time and they playd this song as soon as the came out omfg i went nuts and stayd nuts the hole time for like for like 3 hours lmao

  • It's Called Connections sadly....And if you come from anywhere But Californa, Or from a famous family, You are overlooked. sadly If you try to play anything But Rap and Jonas Brothers Junk, You are not even Noticed.

  • word to that

  • they just played at this fair called mcsummerfest, great show... love the clarks

  • yea i was there. i live in burgettstown. it sucks here!

  • I just saw them on the 13th, they were amazing and played this song

  • omg i love this song

  • The Clarks know how to take a classic and make it their own.

Their version of Louis Armstrong's "What a Wonderful World" will be on their new album 'Restless Days' - coming out this Tues. Another amazing cover!

  • ahhh i skipped my school's homecoming dance for a clarks concert. i'm so excited for the new album!

  • Now that is dedication Marie. :)

Wish I could be there next Sat night in Pittsburgh, I was there for the 2002 Another Happy Ending CD release show. Amazing show.

(what amazes me was Howie Day and OAR were the openers...look where they are now, especially OAR)

  • i'll actually be in pittsburgh that night, i believe. i'll be visiting family, and i hope i can stop by station square later that night...

  • i seen them and donnie iris live at the igloo. fucking great ass show.

  • Pittsburgh chicks are the best!!!!!!!!!!

  • this is the best song by the clarks

  • It's a cover...But A really Good Cover at that

  • i saw the clarks when they first started. They led off for Donnie Iris at IUP. They got booed so bad that donnie had to come out and play with them so they could finish their 3 songs.Everyone was chanting "donnie! donnie!" during their songs so loud that you couldn't even hear them play. I felt really bad for them . I thought they sounded pretty good. It's nice to see them grow up and become successful. It was also nice to see iris come out and try to help them out.

  • the clarks are one amazing ass band. coming straight out of pittsburgh their not only local celebritie's their just also celebrities... they put on one hell of a show and scott can party :) and like moridin812 i am also from butler. and the clarks are hella popular up here. the farthest ive traveled to see them was WV and that was one hell of a show. ive been to 50+ concerts :) love them

  • I went to the Steelers pep rally in Pittsburgh on Jan.23rd and they played this song live.

  • This version is ok it just lacks something an extra kick or oomph its not bad it just lacks something

  • best band ever

  • wowowowo mister.........they might be good but...not best band ever!

  • ok who is

  • try...Thin Lizzy? Not as BEST BAND EVER but sliiiiightly BETTER? :)

  • Thin Lizzy is a bunch of mick-fags compared to the clarks. The only reason people know thin lizzy is because axle rose used to wear their t-shirt and people make covers of their songs that are better than the original.

  • The ......ONLY reason????????

  • and i bet ur a deigo bitch that sucks his uncle's nuts at family reunions. thats why u get all excited when they say they are going to have "hot sausage" their to eat.

  • Pittsburgh born and raised, and this song being sung by this group is very fitting.

  • great begoddamn song....down the resevoir......:) :)

reminds me of a simpler time...

  • I always did love the Clarks, and just like a good portion of the people commenting, my family's originally from Butler, bit north of Pittsburgh. When (I think it was this one) AK Steel went under, up there, the town went to crap. I was stuck in a neighborhood of abandoned houses and impoverished familes, as people just up and left, not even selling houses, or renting them out to whoever looked like they could pay one month's rent... Ah, the good old days.

  • Butler...the home of the original military Jeep designed and built by Bantam Cars

  • Springsteen might have written it, but the Clarks NAILED it!

  • whoa ohio valley..me too! i thought i was pretty much the only clarks fan down here. my mom's from the burgh so i know the clarks purty darn well and have been a fan since i was 9. yinz guys sayin that bruce does it better need to come up to pittsburgh and say that...u'll get ur ass kicked. that's like saying ur a damn browns fan!

  • love this song...and love the clarks. i saw them last night at thursday's and i swear i was the youngest person there..im 14. i got front row. best concert of their's so far

  • A true musical portrayal of the steel valley. I'm a Wheeling-Pittsburgh steel worker's son.

  • @FreeBirdStone Im a wheeling, Wv coal miner and i know how you guys got it! this song is it aint it??

  • pittsburgh!!! that place rocks yah my home town! its a whole lot better than you rich kids that donno how to live

  • @torbran best place ever

  • great cover the clarks fucking own, fuck all of u faggots

  • the clarks version is much better than springsteens. but i give bruce credit for the lyrics. the clarks are the best rock band ever, hands down. and i met them 2 times and there fucking awsome. normally ppl like u and me.

  • The steel valley is truly a sad site when I go home from college. Good 'ol mingo... hahaha

  • i luv this song

  • The Boss' resume speaks for itself but, personally, I think The Clarks' version rocks even more. Another Ohio Valley native here - this song definitely is a microcosm of what's happened to the area.

  • More For the Mon Valley, Called the Rust Bucket.

  • Yup, sounds just like Mon Valley in the song, I live pretty close to there.

  • great song.. bruce if you get some more style you could steal this song back ♥ this song

  • The Clarks rule, bruce springstein got nothin on them.

  • I thought this song was Springsteen's claim to fame, I mean he; a mediocre musician, wrote a song the Clarks actually recorded...he can finally hold his head high!

  • Why does every cover have to sound like the original? If that were the case, then why do a cover?

Get over it...by the way, The Clarks are a good band!

  • u have to be from western pa to appreciate these guys if u were from around here u would understand

  • The Clarks are a good band, Dickert, no need to justify that!

By the way, I come from down in the valley (Johnstown).

  • I'm from the Ohio Valley, I completely understand the stagnate steel valley. Which is the reason why this song is of such significance to me.

  • FreeBirdStone,

The Steel Industry is the biggest example of corporate greed; instead of re-investing into the mills, higher management decided to kill the goose that laid the golden egg...but you and I all ready knew that.

  • I'd also blame the f-ing Steelworkers Union for biting the hand that fed them. Demanding this and that until they made their own product uncompetitive on the world market. A guy pushing a broom for 8 hours/day doesn't really deserve to get $17.50/hour plus paid vacation and full benefits either. Guys got paid to sleep 6 hours of a 8 hour shift underneath a furnace.

Meanwhile the union bosses lived like kings while never getting their hands dirty or doing an honest day's work.

  • BritIronRebel,

You have an airtight case; very well said.

  • I worked Summers in steel mills while going to college. Back then the lowliest guy was getting unreal wages for doing nothing. In fact, those that worked too hard were told to stop it because it made others look bad. They laughed at me for going to college because they made so much without an education. All my money went to schooling while they bought Corvettes & stuff. They'd take union dues from my check for 3 Months, but I couldn't join until AFTER 3 Months, so it was like legal theft.

  • BTW...I don't blame the steelworkers themselves at all. They were sold down the river by the union being in bed with the company and by what they were being told.

The wool was placed over their eyes and everything looked just peachy until it hit 'em almost overnight.

My entire Family worked those mills and I'm proud of that legacy. They won WWII and built cities and a nation with their steel output!

  • My father was a WWII veteran and a steelworker, so again I agree with you 100%. Just as you did, I had to get an education; I became an electrical engineer and now I am in the process of yet another career change. My company decided it was cheaper to send some of our work to India.

I went back to school, received a Masters degree and now I am looking for a position as a math teacher. Talk about 'corrupt' fields...try getting a teaching job!

  • Oh yes! I have seen the nepotism at work in the teaching field too. Unless you've got a relative on the School Board, you've gotta have a last name that ends in the right vowel.

  • yeah, i totally agree with all you said above.

  • Not sure what you're talkin' about. My dad is in the union, and he doesn't "live like a king". Hell, our family doesn't live anywhere near like that. We live in a very small house and are constantly struggling with money and bills and all that stuff. My dad works with Local 5 if you know what that is. He doesn't complain though, and has been laid of THREE times. So, maybe the white-collar highclass leaders of the union are living like kings but not the standard electrician whose working hard

  • You need to reread what I said....operative words: "back then" and "Union Bosses lived like kings".

  • damn right they did. my pap worked for the union.

  • damn my dad worked with a union at some place called fan steel and shit it sucked he got a career change after working in that shit hole for like 19 years i think. hes now a teacher lifes a shit load better

  • Well its just a tribute song dont expect a band known mostly in western Pa to sing a song as good as Bruce Springsteen

  • @friendofdar this song is western pa

  • what the heck is this?!?!?!?! they're not even on the same level as bruce. Why did they even try?

  • I agree they aren't on the same level as Springsteen...they're BETTER!

  • HELL YEAH!!!!!!

  • yeah ur right ill pit a bruce one on
