Although I do love this man's presentations, and I agree that he is an amazing teacher of science, I have to admit at the same time that his presentations (although making a lot of practical sense) do not have any application in my college physics classes. Still, for anyone who has a layman's interest in science, this is a magnificent introduction to the fundamental processes of our world.
this may sound like science fiction but are there such things as Inertia Cancelers?
Say in a vehicle...
The person slams on the brakes and that persons head doesn't move forward at all.
Or when he accelerates extremely fast and there is no gravitational force to push his head back in the seat because the vehicle is creating it's own equal amount of gravity opposite to the gravity being applied to the car.
I'm just trying to figure this out because I am curious about UFO's.
not yet, but one day who knows? Almost anything is possible if we have the formula. maybe this is one thing achievable and would certainly save lives , energy and speed things up etc..:)
My son tried to recreate breaking 1/4 inch board (poplar) under newspaper like the one shown. It kept catapulting the board even tho he hit it very hard/fast. Any ideas why? He wants to demo for a speech he's giving in 8th grade science class.
there could be lots of reasons why. the surface area of the paper might be too small, the area of the board might be too small, he might have tried hitting it too far out on the board (giving the punch too much leverage)...if it didnt work, you didnt do it right.
I remember doing the plank breaking as a project about air in 4th grade. I never realised the air pressure was just the same as the inertia of the block of air. This prof. rocks.
kjaroch, I would assume that the board was not longer than the width of the paper. If the paper is appx. 20" in width, than the board must be, say 25" in length. Also you wouldn't want the board too wide, because then it takes up more surface area.
If non of that were the case, than I would make sure the entire paper is flat, with no wrinkles (bubbles). This includes the centre fold on the paper.
He should be in the "back to the future" movie =D

@Foljiny I'm guessing it was to say that 2 things that take up the same amount of space can have different weight / inertia.

flatten a large piece of paper under a board so no air is under the paper or else it wouldnt work
