I watched him and he was wonderful, he listened, hugged and had a tear for us as well. So many fucking rubberneckers came and made merry on burnt home sites, posed and smiled like a hunter who shot his prey, it was a tough time for us and we are still suffering two years later. Lots of us are in counseling beccause we just cannot get over the horror and death.

I think the Aussie government should set up underground concrete bunkers at every school so that if people's escape routes are cut off they have a chance of a safe haven. If these bunkers save just one life they would be worth building.

To those who doubt that bushfires are common in those parts of Australia, if they weren't, how would plants evovle there that require bushfires to germinate? It's one of the few places in the world where that happens also. If fires were naturally rare, would these native plants have survived hundreds of thousands of years until today?
Now is the opportunity to rebuild in cleared areas with fire retardant materials, practice more strategic burn-offs, have evacuation plans etc. Instead we hear the defiant "We will rebuild. Nothing will stop us" old line. That is precisely the kind of blind defiance of the circumstances surrounding them that led to this tragedy in the first place. If you want to live there, you live by the law of that fire-prone regions. It won't bend for you - you have to bend for it. It's like a boss at work.
Before whites came there were frequent natural bushfires in that region, which were limited in area for one main reason: frequent fires means less fuel for the next fire. With people now able to stop that happening, when it finally does rain, it pours.

Australia is the driest continent on Earth to start with, the winds fueling the fire at 100 km /h. the ground was dried out for 3 days of +40 deg temp, the area was ready to go up. At its worst flames were over 50 m high and moving faster than a car can go, the radient heat was so intense it starts to burn you from 200 m away. Also the Aussie gumtrees have oil in them which explodes into flames in such a fire situation.
Try Walls of fire moving over 100kmh.....pretty hard to out run don't you think. And the fact the people are encouraged to stay and defend your property. Just a horrible combination of extreme hot weather, very dry conditions and gale force winds! No chance to get out!
ieodksnw787, the reason so many people died is because they didnt have the time! some people tried 2 flee, but they didnt have any gas in their cars so it became impossible. also, form the moment they saw the fire, some people had 90 seconds to leave.. nowhere near enough time! and some people were driving out of town when trees fell onto the road, blocking any kid of escape.

The trees contain a highly flamable eucalyptus oil in their leaves and coupled with temperatures of 117F/46C degree heat, 60 -70 mph/ 100+kph winds, and over a decade of drought entire valleys can be consumed literally in seconds. There were reports the fire was moving at over 120kph/ 75+mph. They didn't stand a chance. Lucky for you guys California is a walk in the park by comparison.
yes I better understand the situation now. Since alot of ppl were told to remain (b/c escape was just as dangerous) and also b/c it was a huge rural area whereas the greater LA area is mostly suburban.

im seriously not lying but nearly my whole family got affected. 1st of all, both my grandparents in flowerdale fires and my aunties and uncles lived in whittlesea, murrindindi & my cousins were living in healesville and ive had a very emotional time trying to put up with these very sad fires. really upset and some of my friends lived very close to the whittlesea fires i think they stopped right in front of his house when they were put out. omg i feel so lucky but very sad :'(. f*cken arsonist :@

Something of interest, most of summer has actually been below average temperatures so far.
I have to admit I do question the 46.3 dec (Melbourne city) and 47 dec (Avalon) temps recorded.....These temperatures were mentioned by BOM and blasted out by the media.

I think the Aussie government should set up underground concrete bunkers at every school so that if people's escape routes are cut off they have a chance of a safe haven. If these bunkers save just one life they would be worth building.
In regards to "karma" if the recipients were guilty of something horrid then ok but they were just innocence caught in the wrong place at the wrong time. Saying that they deserved this is like saying the people who died in the 2004 Tsunami deserved it.

To those who doubt that bushfires are common in those parts of Australia, if they weren't, how would plants evovle there that require bushfires to germinate? It's one of the few places in the world where that happens also. If fires were naturally rare, would these native plants have survived hundreds of thousands of years until today?

Nothing will stop us" old line. That is precisely the kind of blind defiance of the circumstances surrounding them that led to this tragedy in the first place. If you want to live there, you live by the law of that fire-prone regions. It won't bend for you - you have to bend for it. It's like a boss at work.

To ieodksnw787, with respect, you just cant comprehend whats its like here. Australia is the driest continent on Earth to start with, the winds fueling the fire at 100 km /h. the ground was dried out for 3 days of +40 deg temp, the area was ready to go up. At its worst flames were over 50 m high and moving faster than a car can go, the radient heat was so intense it starts to burn you from 200 m away. Also the Aussie gumtrees have oil in them which explodes into flames in such a fire situation.

The forests in south eastern Australia are some of the most dangerous in the world for BUSH (not brush) fires. The trees contain a highly flamable eucalyptus oil in their leaves and coupled with temperatures of 117F/46C degree heat, 60 -70 mph/ 100+kph winds, and over a decade of drought entire valleys can be consumed literally in seconds. There were reports the fire was moving at over 120kph/ 75+mph. They didn't stand a chance. Lucky for you guys California is a walk in the park by comparison.

yes I better understand the situation now. Since alot of ppl were told to remain (b/c escape was just as dangerous) and also b/c it was a huge rural area whereas the greater LA area is mostly suburban.
But we do have the Santa Ana winds which are comparable and every time this happens ppl are on edge - I can't smoke a cigarette outside w/ out a dozen dirty looks coming my way.
I feel so bad for those who died and their surviving families.

most people didnt have anywhere to escape too. there was just fire all around them, it didnt help that the vast amount of bush land and high winds sped the fires up. And some people did try to escape but ended up getting burnt to death in there cars =(

because there were multiple fires ablaze across the area. a couple joined with one another and the combination of the australian bush (our eucalyptus trees are highly flammable, they basically explode when lit), the lack of backburning and the extreme heat caused them to move at amazing speeds.
nobody forsaw anything this bad, its our worst bushfires since Ash Wednesday, which killed around 40 something people i think.

They government didn't tell them to do anything of the sort -- the usual policy is you either leave when it's safe, or you stay in your house and do what you can, rather than drive around and risk getting cooked alive in your car. USUALLY, staying in your house is far safer than driving around near fires.

The reason that people are mentioning Muslims, KimDonesia, is that it was previously reported some time back that Islamic radicals said it would be a good tactic if they want to cause death and destruction against 'kuffars/infidels etc'.

I say jihadist like it's a bad thing, beacuse it is. It's a religious struggle, that any thinking individual would see as childish, further, this struggle has manifestly turned violent with the likes of Osama bin Laden being a notable jihadist.

I never said that it offends me, so don't imply that I did, furthermore, calling me a 'fucking cunt' is a mark of a person who cannot construct an argument, which manifestly you cannot do.
The reason people mentioned Muslims, which they should not have done because there is no evidence for them committing this act, is because some Muslims fanatics mentioned it as a way to cause death and destruction amongst infidels/kuffars.
