i remember being stuck on a part of this game and decided to let the game fly by itself in a random direction overnight, when i awoke i was so far away from anything, but i came upon a ship, when i tryed it hail it, it shot once and destroyed me. i later went on to defeat the game after reloading and never stumbled upon that ship again, stil to this day
in the early to mid 90s i remember playing a space game where you where the pilot of ships in a one on one battle, each ship had its one differant fetchers like one having the ability to stop and start with out slowing down or speed up. and each ship had a secound ability. when you have won the battle the next ship on your aponates list would come in to play for the one on one battle. does any one know the name of the game?
@ASSMYLICK The game is Star Control.... part 2 was ported to the 3DO and "enhanced" with new music and voice acting! Then the community ported that version back to PC as The Ur Quan Masters, available on SourceForge.
What do you need a manual for? All the highlighted buttons are the shortcuts. You can transfer power to and from every system f.e. to increase shield power whilst in a fight or put it all into the engine to run at maximum speed. It is almost self explanatory.
I remember the world in solar winds seemed huge and living place. I had the same feeling when I first played grand theft auto III. you know, GTA had a real living world, but as a for a stupid kid, solar winds felt the same.
When i was 5, i tried for MONTHS trying to get farther in the game, but i failed every time, because i always wasted time and ran out of gas, and probably because i was little and dident understand the 'sectors".
According to the game, everytime one of the planets would send of deep space probes, they would explode. If you go far enough, Jake Stone's ship explodes too. At the end, the alien explains that there is a force field to makes the species in the galaxies in the force field destroy one another. Jake Stone is then transported to another galaxy in order to end the experimentation.
Man, I've been trying to remember the name of this game for years. I was in the shower this morning and the name suddenly SLAPPED me in the face. "Solar Winds..."
I played this all the time back on a old Tandy computer with DOS installed... Most kids had a NES or SNES at the time. I was playing stuff like this, Eye of the Beholder, Might & Magic, Warlords... I miss those old games. They were amazing.
OMG, i miss everything about this game. Ya when we were kids playing this, we all thought it was a long game. I remember trying to leave the galaxy map to see what happened. And like a few hours later i was dead. I thought those scary mosters killed me, but after playing the game through, i realized it was that damned force field. I loved this game. Music was awesome and so was the dialog.
BTW, Those Aliens with the horns ARE pretty scary to me still. They made me JUMP out of me seat before.
@Mikemc HAHA i did the same thing, and i came back 2 hours later thinking i was going to encounter a new race and found myself dead. I was pissed, hahah
When I was young, I got the impression this was a really long game from looking at the galaxy map. Heh.
Only more recently in the past few years after I actually beat it did I realize the actual scope of this game. But it was still great - flawed but great. Great music, and the illusion of size made it fun when I was a kid.
Why the HELL does the game fail to detect the FM chip on a soundblaster card setting in DosBOX? Does DosBOX emulate the FM chips as AdLib cards or something?
I hated this game because pretty far through the game it would just apparently be unplayable. I don't know if I did anything wrong but i'll never really know because I haven't found a walkthrough that explains why the point i'm at is a dead end.
This game is part of what defines my youth. I remember...I was playing this game when the news came that my grandpa had died :(. It will forever be in my memory...
While other kids were playing their N64's, I was rockin' out on my comp. with old games like this, Star Hammer, TBS, EGA Trek, Turbo Trek, Red Baron, Star Crusader (that one practically defines my youth...
I'm listening to the video while playing the game...the music won't work for me in DosBox.
I've always loved this game but it ended so abruptly. They could have done more with it if you ask me. I don't think there's a single easter egg or secret in the game, which would have been fun.
Anyone know how I could get a copy of Ep 2 Universe? I've actually still got my 3.5 floppy with both on it, but after 8 years, the floppy isn't readable on the INSTALL.EXE spots. :(
this was by far one of the greatest games ever made, when I found the second half of this game I was like a kid in a goddamn candy store, than x for the vid, really brings back memmories.
I played this when I was so young. I remember some guy coming by and telling you about a system VERY far away. So instead of doing any missions, I tried to fly there. I must have flow in its direction for 1 hour and not gotten even close. I had no idea you could upgrade your ship hehe
Wow this takes me back man thanks for posting it. Why did you cut the intro out though? That was an important part of the flashback. I remember getting solar winds 2 "Galaxy" and being disappointed than a motherfucker cause episode one was a bomb ass game and two was just a waste of 20-30 bucks. Thanks again man.
1:02 Right there... that song... Time to save the galaxy...

Has anyone gone to that 'other nearby solar system' that the alien talks about in the beginning?
goldcakez 6 months ago
@goldcakez Yes, its inhabited by some seriously hostile a-holes, IIRC. Been a while since I played the full version but that was in the demo IIRC.

Can you say "Flashback"? This was probably my first space shooter, if you don't count Space Invaders.
The cargo, engineering, communicate, science, and weapons options on the side screen were so complicated. It felt like a true sci fi game.
