I recently played this game on an emulator. Gameplay-wise, this game is very lousy. The combo system's all broken. It's just a game of chess. But it's artistic-value is REMARKABLE. The characters are so colorful and have very elaborate back-stories as does the game's storyline itself. The overkills are so eccentric and brutal that they rival even the most recent Mortal Kombat's fatalities. I have no nostalgic feelings for this game, but it's rather interesting to say the least.

This game was cruel in so many ways. The overkills were impossible to figure out, and even harder to pull off fighting the cpu, if you lose a fight you go back 2 fights and do them over again, and the final boss just had no mercy on you. Still one of my faves on the Genesis though, go figure.

@THeERTHoNE Xavier's overkill has several variations as well. If you use a projectile to trigger it, the colors of the flames change. And yes, the colors are different for each character sent into the fire.

ahhhh. I remember playing this game with a friend when I was 13 or so. Neither of us knew about overkills. We were fighting on the helicopter overkill stage and he paused to use the bathroom. When h left I unpaused it and killed him, and the fucking helicopter overkilled him. I told him the helicopter came from the background and killed him, lol he didn't even believe me, thought I was trying to cover up that I unpaused the game, lol.

The original EC was so underrated. It combined Mortal Kombat's over the top thetarics, stripped the first few MK games of it's limited movset and gave them abilities that actually fit their fighting styles, and you had a fun but hard game.

This was the game of my childhood. I loved everything about it and still love. I still own this game and the sega mega drive 2. RAX and Blade were my favourites but I have never managed to beat the Eternal Champion at the end. That was pretty hard :)

it was a real good game, the moves were great and offered a whole lot of combinations, but the sounds and musics especially were so poor it kinda ruined it while it had the potential to challenge street fighter II.

Anyway, despite being a fighting game as Street Fighter, Eternal Champions is a whole other story. Different gameplay, different atmosphere, another kind of fiction. Each game was fantastic on their own rights.
