  • tabs?

  • the definition of sound is any audio vibrations that travel through the air over time. so yes, there may be no "music", but there is sound. for me, it's the sound of my computer's fan, my brother downstairs, and my house creaking in the wind. so yeah. i guess john cage was just the original hipster and wanted to be all deep, trying to express that music is everywhere, blah blah blah. i think you get my point.

  • you are crazy

  • Uncontrolable headbanging the whole time

    This is sum crazy stuff...

  • if john cage had a sound problem on stage you would not be able to listen to anything as well...but would it be a masterpiece? no!!! I would like to thank John Cage for fool you people!!!!

  • I thought that it was very splendid music

  • sound at its best.......

  • Master level troll, get on his level faggots.

  • OMG, I've had this in my head alllll day.

  • I'd be the person to stand up and blast "Friday"

  • BORINNGG !!

  • I can't listen to it without getting it stuck in my head.

  • Do I just not get it?

  • I want THIS as my cell RingToNE, and I want it NoW!!!

  • love making music :D

  • a kurva anyad

  • sheet music please?

  • well i was browsing 9gag and theres this post about this song and i searched for it, and boy oh boy, i fell in love with this song

  • going to play it at a talent show

  • If you are not playing along, you are no fun. This is fun! It's also art and music. Deal.

  • I can play this on every instrument.

  • Free repeat button: 0:00

    :D

  • Thanks to the Japanese subtitles this song makes a lot more sense now.

  • Pootie Tang's version was better.

  • So... how many of you watched/listened to the entire song? :D

  • ENCORE!

  • is not a song its a piece... song is something that you SING

  • @acoliferamente Yep....and music is something that you do.

  • @acoliferamente a peice???? whatt?.. its just someone looking at a paper, looking at a watch, then opening and shutting a piano. its not a peice to blind ppl its just silence..

  • @AngelRestivo it was for people who call everything on music.... a "song" eve a instrumental piece

  • @acoliferamente oh =P

  • I think I'm going to perform this piece for my school talent show.

  • such sweet music.i listen to this great piece everyday on my cd player that dosnt work.

  • This is one piece of music that totally gets lost when transported onscreen. The music of the piece is composed of the ambient sounds surrounding the actual, physical context of the performance. The audience becomes aware to the fullest extent of the sounds in his life at that very moment - for four moments and thirty-three seconds. Here, we only get a small indication of what it's like to experience John Cage's 4'33".

  • This is one of those songs that you can't get out of your head

  • @PrototypeAndroid ha, you see, that's the catch.

  • I dance to this music

  • @terryyang88 amen

  • I love that part at 2:09

  • Well... This is the best song to sleep...

  • He made a mistake at 3:37, but apart from that, I'm impressed.

  • I'm setting this as my ringtone

  • If you don't appreciate it, don't listen to it. If you don't like it, kerb the hate and have a little respect for the people that do. Learn a bit about the background behind this piece, personally I find it fascinating and a beautiful idea of making ignorant people realise just how amazing their surroundings really are.

  • @peploe123 its only normal to have loads of ignorant people around. Try talking to them about Rauschenberg and postmodernism....

  • @peploe123 If you appreciate it, don't listen to it

  • 334 people can hear this song in an ultrahuman pitch that the rest of us cannot, and it hurts their ears more than whistling hurts a Namekian.

  • Wow this guy is fucking awesome at piano.

  • Stupid. Not genius. Just stupid.

  • I'm gonna do a remix of this

  • Oh boy, where do I start...

I CAN'T GET THIS SONG OUT OF MAH HEAD!!!!!

633,736 people have heard of this song. 333 people do not agree with it.

....So it's basically a stopwatch ticking over and over again?

My teachers like to listen to this song in school.

    John Cage you freaking troll.

  • "The Emperor's New Clothes"

  • This is the re-mix 5'49": much better imho.

  • I can play this song better.

  • Comment removed

  • this guy is the ultimate troll.

  • @MrPintGlass maybe you should learn to accept my opinion. I understood it pretty well, but for ME, it's still pointless. Deal with it. + no need to be offensive.... your parents should teach you some manners!

  • Let's read the 200 page book Cage wrote on silence, then comment.

  • The mime next door told me to turn it down........

  • polecam rozwalić głośniki na maxa

  • thumps up if you were directed to this video while reading Intellectual Property Law ( Aplin & Davies Book ) !!!

  • Lmao @ people saying this piece is impressive, even though it's ridiculous. I mean really? This is pointless bullshit, period.

  • @MrUscana Maybe if you understood the purpose of the piece, you'd come off as less of an ignoramus

  • this have had inspired me to become a musician!

  • I lost 6 minutes of my life

  • I like to play this song really loud to piss off my neighbours.

  • I would like to see what is actually written on his sheet music

  • @To17mi03 there is an indication to the interpreter to do nothing for the time that last every movement =)

    i'm singing it tomorrow =)

  • where can i download this?

  • I still prefer this to Justin Bieber.

  • RIP Headphone users.

  • I'm the only one in my class who can play this.

  • yesterday i sat in my room and... OMG i heard this song!!!

  • I love this piece!

  • Knowing my luck, I would sneeze...

  • ???????

  • He still needs sheet music. Why didn't he just learn it by heart??

  • @TheWorldTripper haha the sheet music is part of it, your supposed to follow along while you "play" it, and check the stopwatch the same way he is.

  • how awkward he must feel!

  • Fix the sound, tbh.

  • 懐中時計がカチカチいうから音下げるんですね。

  • the purpose behind it was to listen to the sounds around you, that was the piece. as ridiculous as this, it is also very impressive.

  • @tooxcold10 It's not impressive, it's insulting to peoples intelligence. It's like saying "yeah I'm probably the only person alive who's ever listened to the sound of silence, it's such a wonderful gift I'm going to share it with you underlings".

  • @F0aming I do not even remember commenting on this, but I think I was just being sarcastic, when I think about it. Personally as an artist myself this is one piece that I just cannot wrap my brain around. Its not that I hate it or like it, find it insulting or what not, it just does not make any sense to me. That's just it.

  • A symphony is all around you now. Shhhh...LISTEN!

  • @robinhoodey it is bleh whoever buys it is fucking retarded

  • i think john cage is alright and is definitely original but i think this is just a really desperate attempt in doing something "different"... im a pianist and a composer of different styles and obviously have my own individual tastes and preferences in my music, but jokes aside, you cannot "write" silence... as important as silence may be in music in general... you are not one with the music gods if you think you can understand it or "write" silence... you are merely desperate for ideas...

  • I should totally try playing this. I'd be pro.

  • Better than the original

  • My teenage cousin likes to crank this up to piss off the neighbors.

  • this takes a master composer

  • From now on this work will be my encore :P

  • damn this hipsa is sooo old

  • NO KURWA JA PIERDOLE ALE SIĘ POPISAŁ!

  • In your face, Franz Lizst!

  • very stupid!!! its the end of the common sens in the human

  • I've heard quite a few versions of this in my time and this one is pretty stellar.

  • The best moment i 2:08

  • WHY DOESN'T MY AUDIO WORK?!!!!!!!

  • music is haram

  • man this guy should STOP playing so much

  • I go to Mills college. And they LOVE experimental music.

    ....OMFG.

  • LOL

  • What happened? No Rick Roll?

  • I like overhall the passage 2:21

  • What the...

  • @obamao321 You can create an empty audio file and set it's length on 4:33, you don't have to download it illegally.

  • I think I heard it somewhere. Was it on a movie?

  • i like the part were he said ".............."

  • so snob

  • Love the solo at the end

  • easiest piece to play..

  • Just wasted 5:49 precious time of my life

  • @402rafa If you watched this all the way through, you've only got yourself to blame for wasting time.

  • This is the Emperor without clothes!

  • silence is impossible. The composition was written to hear the sounds that are in the room, not from the piano.

  • @mdbtrz hey there! where did you find that info? I could really be useful for an assignment of mine. Thanks.

  • @ColReflauta erm...I was in a class about modern musichistory a while ago, and we mentioned Mr. Cage here, but i think there's some info about this piece somewhere on the net :) I'm not an expert on the field :)

There are some musical theories which have been evolving through the last centuries and the musical principals have evolved too.

  • my friend corey played this out loud on skype

  • playing music is so mainstream.

  • @betolof so this guy is mainstream

  • Haha, so many stupid people on here question why this is nothing more than silence.

Seriously, did You not realize that's the entire point of this? Idiots. *shakes head*

  • @Ollieaxman It's not actually. The point was that nothing is ever silent. Mr. Cage's intention was for the audience to tune into all sounds, not just those intended to be heard (like from the piano).

  • Comment removed

  • The only piece I can play perfectly =]

  • this guy now has a copyright on 4 minutes and 33 seconds of silence... the amount of lawsuits must be amazing

  • @socksuntied 4 minutes and 33 seconds of rests on paper make it a whole diffrent deal!

  • @LeapingDodo There actually aren't any notes or rests on the score! it just reads: I Tacet II Tacet III Tacet. Then is followed by a note that the piece can be performed with any ensemble for any amount of time.

  • what the fuck is written on the note?

  • Why is it JUST silence???

  • @TheTwinklingOne That is the entire point...

  • i am a composer, and i must say...... fucking gay as hell.

  • simply amazing! :D

  • WHERE CAN I FIND THE SHEETMUSIC, PLEASE?!?!

  • Is this the original performance?

  • WTF !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?

  • ah man, he keeps messing it up. this is the worst cover for this song i've ever heard. seriously.

  • it's best than Justin Bieber (y)

  • tabs please

  • Great, now I'll always hear 4'33 when I go to my quiet place. Thanks a lot, John Cage.

  • Anyone know where I can find the sheet music?

  • could anyone get the musical sheet of this?

  • this is just a little but shit isnt it?

  • so gay, so so so gay!

  • some people just not listen to it. The thing about silence is it does not exist. There are always sounds to hear. Music is nothing more than sounds and having an ear for music is like as John Cage would say creating an ego. So try to think about it next time. but its youtube so obviously the opinions are from all spectrums of the intelligence level. usually the lower spectrum

  • @phantasmo14 who are you to be so pretentious about the music genre? everyone knows that this guy is a joke and just wanted to create controversy over a "song" of silence. that's the problem with contemporary piano. there are truly no boundries so now things like 4'33" can become outrageously popular without actually taking any time, effort or skill. if you want to hear some real music, go listen to some brahms.

  • @mariofan529 real music? I like brahms and all the romantic composers. you mentioned boundaries. I think that any type of art form needs no boundaries. music is a form of self expression. obviously you are the rare minority that thinks he's a joke. in fact, the reason im here is because one of my professors recommended me to him. obviously you don't sound like a dumbass, but you're close-minded like one. hopefully you heard some of his other work before listening to this one. Right?

  • @phantasmo14 yes, i have indeed listened to his other works. most of them are just random without much pattern only very rarely coming together to make something sensicle. cage is and most others like him are just not what i like. i do, though, like some 20th-21st century piano pieces. listen to crumbs "makrokosmos" this is has at least the bare structure and use of melody lines rather than random notes to keep me interested and invested in the music.

  • @mariofan529 oh i have heard of crumb. although i have heard some of his orchestral pieces i can't remember now that i think about it but im not familiar with him in the slightest to give you an honest opinion. one of the classes im taking will cover more in depth 20th century contemporary music later. we're on Baroque right now which has some big names like vivaldi, bach, and handel.

  • @phantasmo14 those sound like my kind of classes. are you majoring somewhere in music?

  • @mariofan529 haha yes. majoring in music studies. the class i mention is History and Analysis of Music I. we pretty much study the eras and individual style of each.

  • this version is a little less spirited than other versions i have NOT heard...

  • i want to buy this track from Itunes

  • Someone kill this guy please.

  • I had no idea that not playing anything would be so offensive to people

  • he is doing wrong, he must PLAY it, he must count in mind, with OPEN KEYBOARD!

  • Modern art, never will I understand it...

  • i bought this song on itunes

  • this has got to be the most difficult pieces in repertoire...

  • I m sorry.I m not an his fan,I really donno him.but..what fuck ?!?!??!what has he done ?!

  • the only comment: WITHOUT WORDS

  • 2'12": there is a mistake - the note should be "diesis"
