(Cough) You guys at Lockheed Martin can thank the Russians at Yakovlev, you know, the ones who helped you design the engine system, which is based off the worlds 2nd most advanced VTOL, the Yakovlev Yak0141 (NATO Reported name 'FreeStyler'
@hellcatdave1 The Russians can thank Lockheed for financing the YAK-141 project. Without Lockheed that project would have never gone anywhere off of paper. It is an idea that the Russians had but they could not get it to work and when the Berlin Wall fell Lockheed offered to help and Russia agreed. And if you really want to go there, Henry Ford industrialized Russia so Russia can thank an American that they are not the peasant nation that they were before the 30s.

this plane is not that special...cant reverse the engine after a vertical take off..there are no reason to be happy about this crap..Harrier rules!!!nice vid..
C stands for "Cargo" (C-130 Hercules, C-5A "Galaxy") U stands for "Utility" a deliberately vague term to cover undisclosed uses. (SPYING) S/R stands for Surveillance/Reconnaissance or Stategic Reconnaissance(S/R 71 Blackbird) depending who you ask. (I believe the 2nd more than the 1st because the 1st is redundant)
X stands for Experimental, just like B for Bomber, F for Fighter, A for (Ground)Attack.
X planes are not given names because they are frequently (but not always) one of a kind planes. Names are assigned to production aircraft where there will be dozens, hundreds, or in the old days, thousands made over the lifetime of the design
U stands for "Utility" A vague, nondescript designation that was used only on the U-2 It just wouldn't do to give it an "S" for Surveilence an let everyone what it was really was. Later the S/R-71 Blackbird (surveilance/Reconnisence) was so bold as to plainly state what it was because it had nothing to hide because Nothing could touch it!!
Simple answer. Military likes to keep secrets. And if you can't keep it secret, the next best thing is MISINFORMATION. It is a bomber that is the size of a fighter , so call it a fighter and confuse ignorant morons like YOU!!! "A rose by any other name......"
Lockheed-Martin's next hot rod on the fighter market. Here comes Lightning II.
Lethal. Survivable. Supportable. Affordable.
Well, it's like cars. You gotta innovate cause production can't stop. Next step is spaceships that can do a 180° turn while in a flightpath to shoot down foes who flew across (anyone see Space above and beyond?).
wow. the takeoff looks exactly like the first takeoff of the YF-22

Why does americans name their prototype aircraft with X-##.. Even in films they do..Why not give it a proper name instead.
