Most of the good extreme vocalists smoke actually! I think it actually toughens up your throat a bit, allowing you to do harsher styles.

That being said, Phil doesn't really scream very much anymore after Superjoint Ritual. Down has the occasional scream, but it's mostly melodic.

I do extreme vocals and I smoke about 10-15 a day (sometimes more than a pack depending on whether I don't have much to do) and it hasn't properly affected my voice negatively - I'm fairly sure that I wouldn't be able to growl or hit low notes as well if I never smoked.

The vocalist from Dir en Grey smokes like a chimney but has an excellent melodic voice (hitting very high notes) as well as harsh vocals.

However, alcohol definitely screws with your voice eventually. Use it to your advantage!

Smoking doesn't actually do your throat any good at all in terms of toughening it up, the only good thing for that is vocal practise and training really!

Check out the Zen of Screaming DVD's, interesting stuff man! It's all technique.

Having said that, I'm sure smoking probably did aid in some vocalists achieving a raspier, heavier tone.
