Great show. I know they cut back funding and all but I think it was a mistake to let Jason Alejandro, Arija Bareikis, & Mike McGrady go and focus the show less on detective roles. I thought the detective parts gave the show more variety.
Is there anyone from the LAPD, Southland tv series or maybe a surviving family member who can tell me the name, rank and date of that iconic close-up photo of the tough looking LA police officer pointing his gun towards the camera in the opening credits? What is the story behind that photo?
@oldermanfan Southland opening credits image sequence is a simple slideshow of ten sepia photos of real life criminal-related events (Richard Ramirez aka "The Night Stalker"[1] and one of his crime scenes, a night photo of one of "The Black Dahlia" crime scenes,...) that happened in the city of Los Angeles. In its simplicity, it manages to convey the reality in all its rawness as featured in this show.
These are real LAPD pictures, but I'm wondering if it's just a coincidence that the guy at :25 with the word "no" on his picture looks a ton like the guy who killed nate. anyway, best show on tv.
Too smart for your typical audiences. No wonder why TV shows nowadays are so predictable, and I'm including my fav show Castle on that list of predictable shows as well. Awesomeness of this show is too much to handle. Probably the next best thing to The Wire.
the only thing i dont like about southland is that there isnt more of it. the seasons are kind of short. southland should have seasons with 16 to 22 or more episodes. watching it leaves you wanting more.
One of the best underwatched great shows on television, seriously people are so pathetic when it comes to TV show tastes. This show has action, emotion, great characters and really good directing. The fact that is was canceled shows from NBC shows that people dont know good television when the see it. Glad TNT picked it up.
@liazinhadias It's not from "Primal Fear", it was in that movie but it's originally from "Os Amantes do Tejo" (Tagus' Lovers), a portuguese movie from 1955 and Dulce Pontes' recording that is in "Primal Fear" was initially from her album "Lágrimas" (Tears) in 1993.
Every time I see this opening sequence I get this incredibly visceral and heady feeling, reminding me that the dark side of humanity is ever present.... a very powerful song that captures the vastness and brutality of the LA crime landscape. Great show too by the way.
I just saw shawn hatosy on attack of the show and they also showed a lil glimpse of southland and it looked really interesting, i might get into it. Def gonna watch it tonight on TNT. Anyone have any reviews on the show/ what it's about??
@7ExaltingroguE It's about police officers in Los Angeles. The show has pared down the cast a bit from the first 2 seasons (the budget constraints of being on basic cable versus the first two broadcast net produced seasons), but the main focus is John Cooper (Cudlitz) and Ben Sherman (McKenzie) along with Lydia Adams (Regina King) and Hatosy's character Sammy Bryant. The plots are believable without being too extraordinary or too mundane, but the emotional realism is what really drives the show.
No matter how many times I see that opening descriptor in the intro it still boggles my mind that it is a fact. It is crazy that there really are under 10,000 cops in LA...
when this show was in nbc this is what i always looked forward to every thursday..then they cut iT O_O i was like wdf????????...im confused why they cut kings also................
Kind of funny. if you pause the picture of the chief btw I found out that's Chief Davis responsible for the Wineville Chicken Coop Murders debacle (movie Changeling), it looks like he's shooting at the NBC logo. hahahahaha Shoot NBC
It will be back on TNT in January with all 7 1st season episodes (with some expanded content) and all 6 produced season 2 episodes and then depending on the numbers for those episodes the next step of the show ill be determined.
@AdaliaDee It wasn't entirely NBC's fault, just mostly. They should have known that putting it in "ER's" old time slot was a mistake. You can't just plunk a show like this down into a spot occupied for the last 15 years by one of the most revered dramas ever--even if you were the executive producer of both shows.
The main reason "Southland" got canned was the language. Even bleeped, NBC was getting complaints, and they weren't willing to do what "Brooklyn South" did and make the show TV-MA.
@cubdukat so you're saying that NBC chose to put it in ER's old spot, but NBC is not to blame? and NBC wasn't willing to make southland TV-MA... but NBC is not to blame? I'm not trying to be a jerk here, but it looks to me like NBC made poor choices here.
NB Seeeeeeeeeeeeeeee Sucks! NBC Sucks! Thanks for nothing. I hope NBC goes down to the ground as America's Worst TV Network, And you CAN take it to the bank!
I hoping AMC picks it up. They're the best network rite now, and know how to promote shows very well. Plus the material for this show is made for that network.
I was curious as to who the guy is at 0:18 so I did some research. Turns out it's Richard Ramirez ("Night Stalker") and he's not originally from LA--he's from my hometown of El Paso, TX. He briefly attended Jefferson High School. This may not seem interesting to many but I just find it creepy that someone from my hometown would be as demented as this guy.
After the Shield I was bummed, until I heard about this show. Very well made...hopefully NBC doesn't cancel it since they have a tendency to cancel good shows.
I read that NBC is taking away some of the ensemble serialization and making each episode focus on two-three cops. (Hopefully this means maybe whole episodes with one set of characters and not the elimination of characters)
Can anyone tell me if this show is honestly a good show, like really. And I am saying like in comparison to Third Watch, a very realistic show (I am not interested in some overblown drama) thanks.
cancao do mar precede RJD2, but there are some similarities in the beat of the first few seconds, however Cancao do mar has a darker note and if you listen to the whole song it is very beautiful.
My only problem with the show (great show) as that they even threw that statistic (10,000 cops for 4 mil ppl) around.
I find it amazing that LA is not in constant chaos. It makes some of my cynicism go down, if 10,000 cops is enough to even hold the web of the disunified region of LA together (no racial or language harmony there).
But on the other hand, they should keep the numbers quiet... I mean even the MS-13 gang has 100,000 members. If the gangs do the math, it'd be a bad day for LA.
it's almost hard to believe how small police departments are versus the rest of the population. And I'm not sure about he Southland number, but I know where I am from (Chicago) that a large number of the overall staffing includes administrative desk people.
Incorrect Chocolate Brown. Perhaps it was in "Kushi", but that was made in 2000.Its a Portuguese song called "Cancao do Mar" that was in the movie Primal Fear in 1996. Cmon people this isn't the 80's before we could easily fact check. It took me 2 google clicks to get that info.
Thanks for the both for telling. I actually found out what the title of the song was immediately after I asked this question. I viewed another video of the opening credits of Southland and that's where I found the name. Thanks anyway.
The show is average. I think it could have pulled more loyal watchers and a bigger fan club if the show was shown on FX or another cable network. Where they can have more free range to use swear words and show the grittiness of the streets of LA. This is pretty much a waterdowned version of the Shield.
So true! I mean, I can't help but think how much better this show would be if it were on HBO or Showtime. I feel we're getting cheated 'cause I'm sure the writers would love to push that envelope w/out worrying about the offending someone or "showing too much on primetime tv." NBC needs to stick to comedy and leave the real drama to cable network.
Great show. I know they cut back funding and all but I think it was a mistake to let Jason Alejandro, Arija Bareikis, & Mike McGrady go and focus the show less on detective roles. I thought the detective parts gave the show more variety.

The show is average. I think it could have pulled more loyal watchers and a bigger fan club if the show was shown on FX or another cable network. Where they can have more free range to use swear words and show the grittiness of the streets of LA. This is pretty much a waterdowned version of the Shield.

HBO....I swear this show would be HARDCORE!! If only it were on an uncut station.
